Season Award Predictions

Here's what I think the Season Awards will go to, I will leave marks after each one whether I agree or not.        Be sure to put your two sense worth in. Thanks! (N.B. No particular order in the Honorable Mention sections)

MVP: Michael Vick

Why: Because he electrifies the crowd with his running ability and after that comeback against the Giants he got everyone on the fence to sway to his side.

My take: Michael Vick has been nothing short of amazing and after that comeback against the Giants ON THE ROAD, he secured his MVP title. The Eagles offense has been fun to watch, mostly because of him and Desean Jackson. They have weapons everywhere. Maclin, Avant, and Celek are all great targets, and McCoy has been a dependable replacement for Westbrook. Vick has been fun to watch, but I don't think he should win it.

Honorable Mention: Yeah, Tom Brady. This has been a 2 man race for a while. Brady has some serious accomplishments that if Peyton did, he would definitely get the MVP (They'd give it to him if he hadn't throw almost as many picks as Eli...). He hasn't thrown an interception since Week 6 against the Ravens. He broke Bernie Kosar's record of pass attempts without an interception. In that span, Brady has thrown as many TD's as Eli Manning has INT's over the whole season. He also has nearly a passer rating of 110? He also shredded 8 of the league's top 10 defenses.

Other regular season awards predictions after the jump!!!!

******************************************************************************************************************************

Star-divide

Coach of the Year: Raheem Morris

Why: The Buccaneers were 3-13 last year and now they're looking like they're making the playoffs.

My take: Raheem has done some special things with this terrible team, but I think half the team has seen the inside of a police station in dishonorable dispositions. Still, they are on the verge of the playoffs. Not my choice.

Honorable Mention: (1) Bill Belichick: He's taken a set of rookies and united them around Brady in what was supposed to be a "rebuilding year" by many analysts and turned them into the Super Bowl favorite.                                 (2) Todd Haley: Brought in new coaches to help out and nabbed an effective RB(Thomas Jones) off the cocky Jets to help JC lead the NFL's biggest Rushing attack. Oh, they're on the verge of the playoffs too!

******************************************************************************************************************************

Offensive Player of the Year: Maurice Jones-Drew

Why: He's carrying the Jags and possibly carrying the Jaguars to the post season.

My take: He's nothing short of his "Pocket Hercules" nickname. He's small, fast and tough to tackle. He's currently second in the league in rushing(21 yards behind first), but come the end of the season I think he'll be the league leader. Hopefully Peyton Manning chokes in the regular season like he does in the post season and MJD gets another chance to show off it the playoffs.

Honorable Mention: Arian Foster. Started off the season with a great performance and has been consistent but MJD is catching up. He is also on a very disappointing team this year that will fall extremely short of expectations.

******************************************************************************************************************************

Defensive Player of the Year: Julius Peppers

Why: He's changed the Bears defense to what the way I remember it. He's been everywhere on the field. 11 Passes Defended, 8.0 sacks, 3 forced fumbles and 2 interceptions. He rejuvenated this team to a playoff berth. He a lways plays with the pressure of having Jay Cutler on the other side of the ball, which is big cloud over his head.

My take: I wasn't sure on this one so I expect lots of criticism. Thanks players for not making it obvious enough. Ha!

Honorable Mention: (1) Cameron Wake, (2) Justin Tuck  (3) Jerod Mayo (4) Clay Matthews (5) James Harrison et al.

******************************************************************************************************************************

Offensive Rookie of the Year: Sam Bradford

Why: He's led the Rams to their first playoff berth in quite some time and he's finally given Steven Jackson the chance he deserves. What a great cornerstone to build your franchise on. Nice pick Rams!

My take: QB's all take the spot light; This one deservedly so. Bradford is the new face of the franchise and Rams fans better buy his jersey because he's the future of this team, and a bright one at that.

Honorable Mention: (1)Dez Bryant is the guy the Cowboys traded up to get. (2) Chris Ivory is the guy the Saints needed to fill in for the beat up RB corps in New Orleans (3) Rob Gronkowski is the red zone threat and blocker the Patriots were looking for after the TE housecleaning. (5) Jacoby Ford is the big play maker the Raiders needed on offense and special teams for some time.

******************************************************************************************************************************

Defensive Rookie of the Year: Ndamukong Suh

Why: He's been an immediate impact on that line registering 8.0 sacks so far this season. That dude is going to be a beast for years to come and he's been a huge reason the Lions have just won back to back game. Wow!

My take: Suh has been a great pick by the Lions and he is going to anchor that line which could become scary with a FA pick up or another solid draft pick. Oh, Jim Schwartz is going to do just that by the way. Look for the Vikings to be in the basement in a few years....

Honorable Mention: Devin McCourty won't make it because of Suh's immediate impact. But he'll get his Defensive Player of Year Award in a year or two. Yeah, he's that good. He's better than Revis by a long shot. McCourty does it all.

******************************************************************************************************************************

NFL Comeback Player of the Year: Michael Vick

Why: Because people have a sick obsession with this dude.

My take: Heaping an MVP Award isn't enough for people, they want to drowned him in awards. Hopefully his performances get drowned in the playoffs too. He does deserve this, but not the MVP award. He'll likely get both much to my chagrin.

Honorable Mention: (1) Wes Welker is the best candidate I think coming off that potentially career ending injury for a WR. (2) E.J. Henderson, wow, I can't believe that dude is playing already again. Did you see what happened to his leg?! (3) Leon Washington, Ok, his performance wasn't that good but I remember seeing his fibula sticking through his sock. Oh, he returned two TD's in the same game this year which impressed me.

Thanks for reading guys and fire away with hopefully constructive criticism. For those who don't like that kind of stuff just rip it apart then. Thanks for the long read either way.

I think you're right on par with what most of the national media thinks

That said…if anyone deserves Comeback Player of the Year, it’s Wes…coming back from injury….yet was front and center at OTAs (!!!) and training camp this year, and hasn’t missed a game this season. Oh and he also has 7 TDs and almost 800 yards. I’m still not positive on what Vick has “come back” from. You can’t “come back” from something you cause on your own account. That’s just me though.

I don't think so. Homey don't play dat.

I would say Vick is headed toward "Homeless man of the year" if we have a lockout

Dude is only making like 4 grand a month after paying debts and a lockout will absolutely KILL his financial obligations.

That said, the picks seem alright though I still don’t think Vick deserves an MVP trophy for this year.

by satsunada on Dec 22, 2010 12:38 AM EST up reply actions

Vick shouldn't be considered for Comeback...

…he “came back” last season. He was just the back-up. If the award was, “most improved”, then absolutely. But Comeback? Henderson deserves that.

Don't know how you or the media can vote Vick in over Brady for the MVP

Brady has faced top defenses like the Bears, Chargers, GB, Steelers, Ravens and the Jets w. WR who was bust in Seattle, a WR coming back w. an ACL injury, a two 2nd year WR’s in Juilian and Tate and two rookies TE in Gronk and Herno and won all those games except the 1st Jets game.

Vick on the other hand has played against these top 10 defenses (acc to FO)
-GB-Lost
-Bears-Lost
-NYG-won both games

and against these teams
-Dallas –
-Lions-won
-Jax-Won
-Wash -Lost
-SF-won
-Indy-Won
-Wash-Won
-Hous-Won
-Minn-TBD
-Dallas-TBD

Nuff said

look at the FO rankings
Brady- no. 1 in both DVOA & DYAR
Vick – no.13 DYAR and no. 10 in DVOA

Let’s take the qb’s in front of Vick
-Brady
-PM
-Brees
-Rivers
-Rodgers
-Ryan
-Schuab
-Orton
-Ben
-Flacco
-Cassel
-Freeman (yes…Freeman..the 2nd year qb for the Bucs)

Add to the fact that Vick has DeShaun Jackson and Maclin

There a heavy bias with vick

mainly because he came off an incredible game. Brady has been far more consistent, but vick’s one game seem to make people forget brady for the past few weeks was unstoppable and tore through some of the NFL’s best defenses. While vick was pretty meh for for the past 3 weeks until the giants game. Plus not forget Brady has very little in terms of weapons while Vick has Desean, McCoy, Maclin all very established players in their own right. Plus Brady tore apart the bears, who vick had trouble with. The MVP should be judged based on their performance for the whole season not just one or two incredibly memorable games. If we’re going by that…Brady is the MVP hands down.
The thing is Brady has been so consistent and good that it’s pretty much expected of him. When he puts up gawdy numbers and record it’s not electrifying because we expect it. Vick is more hyped up because of how surprising he was and he has good numbers. But Brady has done much more this season especially considering he doesn;t have quite as much talent in the passing game as vick does around him.

Brady has a much better OL than Vick. And Mike has been good the whole season, he really hasn’t had a game where I thought he played poorly. Chicago maybe, but that was much more on the defense/OL. MVP I’d give to Vick and OPOY I’d probably give to Brady, or maybe the other way around. Not sure but since they’ve done it so well and so differently you’d think they have to get recognized by those awards.

The award is Most Valuable.

You think the Patriots this year without Brady would be close to 12-2? You think the Eagles without Vick would be much worse than 10-4? That was the argument that allowed Manning to win it last year, even though Brees was the better player (not that Vick is a better QB than Brady or anything; better athlete absolutely, but QB? Not even close).

I guess Rivers is a lock for Offensive Player of the Year then?

How about DPOY?
I can’t think of anyone lighting it up on D this season. Cameron Wake has 12 sacks, Matthews has a similar number, Ngata is a beast, but they can’t give it to a DE/NT…

by insertscreenname on Dec 22, 2010 1:12 AM EST reply actions

I mean, I assume Rivers is already a lock.

And Peppers’ numbers aren’t overly good. His impact on that Bears D cannot be overlooked (he was apparently dominating earlier in the year, freeing up the other guys), but there was no Urlacher last year either…

Perhaps Urlacher

He’s the MLB of a true Tampa-2, and while a lot of the looks will be at Peppers, Urlacher’s got 113 tackles, 4 sacks, 1 pick, forced 2 fumbles, defensed 10 passes, and won at least two games that I’ve seen with last-minute heroics.

Also helps that he’s in a team that’s a playoff lock (unlike Wake and Matthews) and in a glory position.

Yeah, I'd go Urlacher,

Unless Matthews has a beast of a finish (he needs to get close to 18 sacks), leads the NFL in sacks, and GB make the playoffs.

Well... This isn't clear enough I guess...

I’m predicting who the awards go to but I don’t necessarily think they deserve them. People are having a Vick love-fest, I honestly think they will give him those awards. (And yeah, coming back from what?) Oh, what would Brady do to the Redskins?!

by SyracusePatsFan on Dec 22, 2010 1:13 AM EST reply actions

I could see Defensive Player of the Year and/or Comeback Player of the Year going to Bryan Urlacher

He’s already won a DPOY, and he’s playing better this season than he was when he won it. And considering the guy is coming off a 2009 where he was on IR, he’s outperforming Welker (who’s remarkable for coming back, but he’s still having a ‘down’ year) and Vick isn’t really a comeback player. Being third on the depth chart in 2009 isn’t really something you can ‘come back’ from in 2010. Plus I’m not sure the voters would appreciate the fact he’s coming back from a mess of his own making.

Do they give two awards to one player?

Not that there is a rule against it but I thought they usually select different players for each. Is there precedent for a player winning more than one award in the same year?

by Oughat on Dec 22, 2010 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

Brady won MVP and OPOY in 07

Other than that, I don’t know.

I don't remember a comeback player playing so well

Chad Pennington won a couple, but he still wasn’t playing as well as Manning/Brady, so he never got into the OPOY or MVP area. Urlacher’s playing lights-out after a year on IR. It’s ridiculous, and because it’s so ridiculous, he ought to be a shoe-in for Comeback Player of the Year.

Also, technically Vick hasn't come back from anything this year.

But the award has no defined rules as to is eligible. I can see Vick winning the OPOY, depending on how he does in the MVP.

DPOY

may I suggest Tamba Hali as a candidate? His emergence has helped the Chiefs defensively.

I don't know about irrelevant

I mean they were pretty good in the Priest Holmes years. Yeah, they didn’t get anywhere in the playoffs, but certainly not irrelevant.

Exaggeration for comedic effect.

I know they won the West in the Brees-SD years.

Definitely--but you forgot Super Bowl MVP: I say Brady or Woodhead

I’m actually from Gang Green Nation. And I say this with absolutely no bitterness: you guys are going to win the Super Bowl. It’s going to be an absolute bloodbath. I hope at least that the Jets are a stumbling block in the divisional round, but I doubt it. Brady will be phenomenal, of course, and only his thumb will be without a ring. He shouldn’t worry about that though—with Belichick there, I wouldn’t be surprised if Brady has 6 or 7 by the time he retires. Danny Woodhead will destroy, leaving the Jets green in more than just their uniforms. So good luck with the rest of the season and in the postseason, though I doubt you guys will need it.

by Maya on Dec 26, 2010 7:01 PM EST reply actions

Whoever comes out of the AFC is definitely going to earn it

There are alot of GOOD teams in the AFC this year. The Jets might have problems in the divisional round if they end up against the Colts, since that’s how it’s kinda looking. Should be a great playoff year.. except for that pesky NFC West game..

by satsunada on Dec 26, 2010 8:24 PM EST up reply actions

Jets should play @ KC (#3) in the wildcard round.

Win, and they can only play in Foxboro (if they finish with #6).
What will be interesting is if KC win. That means the Pats will face IND (should finish #4), JAX (they can still win the division) or BAL/PIT (whoever doesn’t win the North).
Just between us, I’d rather the Jets beat KC than run the risk of facing an eager Ravens team.
