Patriots as Belichick's Robots? Think Again...
It is truly amazing to me how so many people continue to insist that New England is a cold, unemotional Belichickean machine which plays each game with a flat heart rate. I couldn't disagree more; while boring and monotonous throughout the week's preparation, I think these Pats play with more emotion, heart, swagger, and fire than any other team in the NFL. Do you think Tom Brady's mega-spike in the Pittsburgh game was installed into the gameplan earlier in the week? Were James Sanders' and Devin McCourty's mock post-pick Jet Plane celebrations adjustments sent into Jerod Mayo's helmet pre-play? Was Brady's taunting of the Jet's sideline on Monday night predicated on treating the Jets game just like any other game? Do you think Brady audibled at the line of scrimmage into a play which called for Aaron Hernandez to make it rain after his one yard touchdown reception in Gillette on Monday? Even Belichick injects some heat- any analyst who says Belichick ran up the score to gain the edge in the strength of victory tie breaker is out of his mind . Belichick hears what guys like Rex Ryan say and he wants nothing more than to go out, outcoach the other guy across the sideline, and remind the world that the AFC East is his division. Make no mistake- this group wants to win and will not hesitate to celebrate any and all success. And why not? They are performing better than any other team in the League and they have beaten the absolute best the AFC has to offer.
Look, we have all heard exactly how much emphasis the Patriots place on the importance of preparation before the season and in between games. Brady, Belichick, Mayo, Wilfork, McCourty, Welker, they all swear by it. Walk into the Patriots facility during the weak and I'm sure you can hear a pin drop as players tuck themselves away in front of film in the classrooms. A cemetery would be more exciting. But this team shows up to work so they can humiliate teams who refuse to accept the significance of preparation. In the preseason, Ryan stood laughing as his team played with shake weights and ate Big Macs on the sidelines of practice. The same team just got blow out by 42 points in what may have been the most hyped regular season game in the history of the NFL. The Patriots, on the other hand, played with fire, muscle, excitement, adrenaline, and power and they let the Jets know it. Goof off during the boring stuff, say the Patriots, because we're going to go out on game day, on the stage, kick your butt, and let all of America know how much we love being better than you. Businesslike and predictable? Maybe during the week, but right now Sundays belong to the Pats, and I don't think anyone is more pumped about it than they are.
This team isn't compiled of boring robots- it's quite the opposite. This team is made up of serious workers who win big, and have an absolute blast doing so.

Belichick drafts guys who are team captains in college...
he clearly wants the intelligent guys who can read plays and read games and make decisions for themselves.

I think media (and other fans to an extent) underestimate Belichick
Monday’s game should have been an illustration to the world that the guy wants to win as badly as anybody. And he doesn’t care how animated he gets. Tom Brady on WEEI Monday said word for word what Belichick has now and forever preached. “Play 60 minutes.” He even went so far as to bring the ENTIRE TEAM on the sideline during the 4th quarter to make sure they knew he wanted it to go down that way. It was to the point where Rob Gronkowski was motioning others to get over to where Belichick was; sort of like a “get over here, coach is talking” type of thing.
That’s who he is. That’s who he always has been. And most of the national outlets still don’t get the hint.
I don't think so. Homey don't play dat.
Creator of the moniker "DDR©"
Most of them have slipped too much whiskey into their $10 beer to notice by the 4th quarter.
I think they write most of the stories before the game and just mail in the one that is closest to their perceived reality.

You hear it from a lot of former players though
The kind of guy Belichick really is and how they feel about the organization. It’s unfortunate that the reaction from the interviewers is usually somewhat dismissive, as the media clearly know better than everyone else…
Still, I can’t help but believe it only benefits the Patriots that this misconception is perpetuated. The less they think of us they greater our chances of crushing them. I remember thinking at the beginning of the season that our schedule was absolutely brutal. I figured either we wouldn’t be that good and wouldn’t make the playoffs or, if we did make it to the post-season, it would have been after the Pats thoroughly proved themselves against the best in the league. I’m pretty glad, to say the least, that we’ve beaten every playoff bound team we’ve met so far. Makes you feel like we belong, which I can’t say I felt last season.

There's a reason a guy like Junior Seau would keep un-retiring just because Belichick asked him to...

This is why I love this team
Yes they may be boring during press conferences. They may be bland during the week.
When it’s game-day it’s game-day. They jump and dance and celebrate, and butt heads, and trash talk on the field just like any team would. In fact, maybe even more.
They play with passion, intensity, heart and fire. They enjoy winning. And when they’re winning they wear their emotions on their sleeves for all of us to see and it’s fun to watch.
BTW Great post, Rec’d
Anyone else notice
Belichick’s barely concealed smirk in the post-game press conference? That’s about as much emotion as I’ve ever seen him display…

How'd the Pats get called classless
If they’re just “robots” and “boring” anyways? I definitely heard all that before Spygate, but that’s what people will tell you now, rofl.

Belichick is always concerned about keeping whatever edge he can
His wary relationship with the media stems in part from his time in Cleveland with an owner who absolutely loved spending time with the local press. It would happen that on occasions Belichick would read about some aspect of his gameplan, or how a certain player would be used, in the newspaper because the owner had loose lips and enjoyed the camaraderie he had with the beat writers.
Belichick doesn’t want the media or the fans or anyone to know him because he feels that the more his competitors know about him as a person (on or off the field), the more likely they’ll be able to figure out how he thinks, and what he would do in a particular situation, resulting in them being better able to game plan against him. Whatever edge he can maintain and control, he will do it to the best of his ability.
Keep the faith!
awesome, awesome post and I couldn't agree more
They all sound like robots on TV, because thats the culture under Hoodie. But we see the emotion on the field, and that’s what matters as fans. Seeing Wes give the first down motion, seeing Brady’s spike against Pittsburgh, Woodhead fired up after making a special teams tackle- those are what gets ME fired up
Colin Cowherd is more annoying than the Progressive radio commercials.
May I add Logan Mankins in virtually any post-whistle situation? lol
I never realized how much I missed the guy. Never mind his impact as a beast on the line – his name has been called on just about every other SportsCenter replay of something the Pats did Monday – but just seeing him shoving Troy Polamalu after he was roughing up Brady, getting into it with the Lions and again with the Jets. Being a ‘physical’ team, in my opinion, goes beyond winning the line of scrimmage. And brings an attitude that I don’t think anyone else could. Gotta love it.
Deep in enemy territory
He was instrumental in the second BJGE rushing TD
He pulled around from LG right around into a sort of TE position before Benny even found the hole. Watching it made me realise just how quick Mankins could scamper into position.

He is a special player
And a great talent, and I do believe he deserves to get paid. But if you offer him top 3 at his position money, and he turns it down because it’s not #1 money do you give in ?
I don’t think so. BB has let talent walk plenty of times. Yeah it sucks for us fans at the time, but this team has always had a lot of quality depth, and remains competitive year in and year out. So whether or not Mankins is with us next year, I trust BBs judgement.
I’ll definitely enjoy watching him the rest of this year, and I do hope we keep him. But a big part of me feels like its unlikely. We’ll see.

You know what
This reminds me of how much I really really like Devin McCourty.
He seemed to come in here as a rookie almost already knowing the Patriot way. And has at least seemed quite mature so far.
But yeah like the other guys he does display his passion on the field, in the right place to.
falling in place
can’t disagree with you.The patriots have turned themselves into a over powering machine/with plent y of emotion, they don’t talk, they walk the walk
