Around SBN: Dog Football! Which Breeds Are Best Suited For The Gridiron?

A Dynasty Over? How about Reborn

As I sat down to watch the 2009 draft there were many players that I believed could really help the team for the 2009 season.  After the conclusion of Day One, besides Darius Butler nobody stood out as a great pick.  With so many good players still on the board Hoodie and Co.  traded up and stocked up for picks for this years draft.  Much to my dismay, as me being somebody who would rather see the team use all there picks to stock up for that year and try to go on another super bowl run again it left me annoyed.  Now looking back on what Hoodie has done from the 09 draft to the present it all really makes sense...The Rebirth of a dynasty.  With one of the youngest defenses in the league and three second round picks in the 2010 draft and two first round picks in the 2011 maybe it can happen.  Many were left puzzled when we traded away Richard Seymore to Oakland, but was it really a dumb move?  The answer is NO!  Seymore is over 30 years of age now and Oakland is one of the worst teams in the league, so when you break it down we got a potential top 5 pick for  yes a Pro Bowler, but a Pro Bowler that only has maximum 5 years left.

So while i give you a break to compute and agree with the first part of my argument I will tell you why I wrote this.  Prior to the 09 season I heard sports writers and analyst talking about how maybe Bill Belichick was using this season as a rebuilding year.  Now lets best honest no true fan wants to here that when you have all-stars like Tom Brady and Randy Moss on the team. So yes this really bothered me also because the hangover from the Super bowl loss to the giants hadn't  completely worn off because of the injury to Tommy Boy on opening day.  When you look back on all the moves we did throughout the season, it does look like he used the 2009 season as a rebuilding year.  The trading of our best pass rusher Richard Seymore, the amount of times our two younger corners, Darius Butler and Johnathan Wilhite played over the newly acquired veteran Shawn Springs.  Trading up there picks and stocking up for this years draft...And really, if Hoodie did use this year to rebuild he choose the perfect year considering his franchise quarterback was coming back from a year long injury

Many of you will disagree with what I just wrote but when this years draft is over and and the roster for 2010 is finalized you might see this hope.  And while our young veteran defense and Tom Brady and  his weapons hit the field  on Opening day we just maybe witnessing the rebirth of a dynasty

I just made a very similar post in the "reality" fanpost a few down from yours.

Only thing I’d add is

A) The Raiders seem to be getting better, sadly, so maybe top-10 or 15
B) We still really need to shore up the offensive line, and Wilfork could set us back in a big way if we don’t resign him.

Didnt read yours sorry, but I do agree with signing wilfork but lets not get carried away with oakland finishing mid pack next season

No big deal since we're heading toward the quiet time here.

Normally you want to see if there is an active post on a topic first (Ben’s is no longer on the list, so you’re good). This post also serves as a counter point to “A Little Patriot Reality”, which is another good reason to start a post (if your point might get lost in the comments). Thanks for the post.

Naw, I'm not saying I made a similar fanpost.

Just a similar comment IN the “A Little Patriot Reality”. I was just amused that I posted there, then came back and saw someone else had basically my exact opinions.

by 2011 comes

the raiders will be going 8-8 to 10-6. My opinion though based on how the team is doing with each other, and davis making a couple of good moves of late.

Raiders are always "End of Season Warriors"

Which means that they’ll still give us a top 10 pick, guaranteed.

AFC South, Steelers and Fins can sweep them...

…Broncos and Chargers should sweep, Kansas should split. NFC West will win 2/4. Here’s to hoping for 3-13!

Like trading a first round pick for a guy over 30? That team can see light at the end of the tunnel when al davis can’t see any light at all. But I love the seymore trade

If Al Davis saw the light

His flesh would burst into flame and all the bats within 300 miles would take off simultaneously and swoop around the sky, screeching in tremendous pain.

Token southern hemisphere guy - 14,688km from Foxboro. That's 9128 miles, for you heathens.

Great outlook

Belichick has never acknowledged a rebuilding year in New England and when asked about it he says he expects to win every year and that’s how he puts the team together. In fact, he’d seem surprised by the question as if to say it would be ludicrous for a coach to purposely waste a year, so why are you even asking this?

I think Belichick thought the team could still win without Harrison, Seymour, Bruschi and Vrabel. At the time he still thought Joey Galloway or Greg Lewis would work out, didn’t know Tyrone McKenzie would be put on IR before Week 1, or that Shawn Crable once again wouldn’t see the field. Brandon Tate came back, but was lost again. It might have helped if Adalius Thomas stepped up and played to the level of his contract too.

Excuses? Maybe. I look at them more like explanations. 2010 is not a lost season, and I take issue with those that have already forecast doom, gloom and another year of mediocrity ahead no matter what moves the Patriots make between now and September.

Keep the faith!

It may actually help to have some less dominant years.

When the guys come together finally, it will be something they accomplished as a team. There’s value in that.

At least with 5 years since the last Super Bowl win,

no one can come aboard just assuming they’ll win one just by putting on the jersey

Don't worry

they will be one of the top-3 vegas favorites to win Super Bowl XLV.

Forgot about that

That would be painful to take. Thankfully, I don’t live there, but the thought of the Pats celebrating in the Luke is horrifying.

+1

Amazingly, his defense still performed overall (as measured by points surrendered, the only stat that matters).

The thing that probably most derailed him was the underperformance of the offense – and we can probably attribute a lot of that to the combination of a zillion injuries (offensive line in particular) and Bill O’Brien’s rookie campaign.

I am firmly in the camp that says that the loss of Bruschi, Vrabel, Seymour & Harrison is highly over-rated. All were awesome players. But their absences had nothing to do with the struggles of this year’s Patriots team. None of those guys played offense (Ok, Vrabel did, but only on the goal line …).

Thank You

It makes me sick when Pats fans (cough* Simmons and Mike Lombardi *cough) use this stupid hindsight view, like “Oh, the Pats were rebuilding all along.”

Really Mike? Is that why you said they had the most complete roster before the year, and picked them to win the Super Bowl.

The Pats were everyone’s favorite (Vegas, most media members and ‘experts’) coming into the season, and this revisionist history is sad. Belichick underestimated the loss of those defensive guys. Now, there is talent there and if guys like Mayo, Meriwether and Guyton play consistently well, it can improve quickly. He also overestimated the offense, as it, in its current form without a proven third option and Brady’s frustrating ability to only look at Moss and Welker, is an offense that can be contained.

Now, I don’t think the Pats run of success is over, but with Miami and the Jets no longer hopeless in their direction, and teams like the Ravens, Steelers, Colts, Chargers and Texans all with good young talent, their being Elite might be on shaky ground.

i think

that brady looked to those targets because bill o’b based the offense around JUST those 3 guys(brady, moss, welker). Notice how watson is always in blocking, and they hardly utilize the running game. They should be more diverse in offense rather than center around 3 guys.
