that ends the peyton=greatest qb ever debate for a while

by bforce3 on Feb 7, 2010 10:04 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

Here is what Mike Reiss just wrote:

Peyton Manning is a great quarterback, but what we learned tonight in Super Bowl XLIV is this: He’s no Tom Brady in the pressure moment on the game’s biggest stage.

Looking to lead the Colts back from a 24-17 fourth-quarter deficit against the Saints, Manning threw an interception that cornerback Tracy Porter returned for a touchdown, a key play in New Orleans’ 31-17 upset victory.

It was a costly mistake, the kind of miscue that Brady, in his four Super Bowl appearances, never made in the critical fourth-quarter situation.

Even in the Patriots’ Super Bowl loss to the Giants, Brady had led a fourth-quarter drive for a touchdown before the defense couldn’t hold.

For all the stories that were written over the last week about which quarterback was the best of the decade – Brady or Manning – one aspect was overlooked: How Manning would lead the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV.

If you measure a quarterback by how he responds in the pressure moments on the game’s biggest stage, the debate ended with authority tonight.

Mike Reiss is the man!

I wonder if Polian, Irsay and Caldwell are reveling in their regular season game win streak now.

I hope it ends forever!

The 2010 New York Mets: Maybe it's the Phillies' turn to have 95% of its roster on the DL

The 2009 New England Patriots: At least we got our division title back

The 2009-10 New Jersey Devils: It's Kovy Time!

Unbelievable game all around

The Colts-Saints were about as well matched as the Pats-Giants. Those teams play a week later and the outcome could easily be different. One of the best Super Bowls (not including the Patriots ones) I can remember.

Colts fans must feel like shit right now. I bet Tom Brady is going to sleep well tonight. Go PATS.

you know...

I wouldn’t wish that Super Bowl loss feeling on anyone (even those Colts fans that continuously love to rub in that 18-1 season’s Super Bowl loss.) I couldn’t sleep that night, and walked around in a daze pretty much for a while. Maybe it took this to give them a bit of empathy???

Yeah

I remembered the night of Black Sunday. I could not sleep until 12:45 AM. The next day, I was dazy while my classmates (large Puerto Rican population= NY Giants fans) harassed me

Tell me about it....

I walked into my first class of the day on Monday…first thing I hear:

“HA!!!! Patriots lost!!! HA!!!”

Oh man. Painful. Just painful.
But I was still proud to be wearing my Pats jersey that Monday.

+1

except that Black Sunday was far far worse because of just HOW FREAKIN’ CLOSE we were – so many tiny, individual chances throughout the game that would have flipped it to be 19-0. The missed interception. The houdini escape from a sack by manning. The stinkin’ velcro helmet …

But yeah, hopefully Colt’s fans can finally feel a bit of empathy for the blackness that we felt.

Manning Choked!

Absolutely, the greats would never throw a 4th quarter pick. In the biggest game Brady, Montana, etc., never has. Manning, once again choked, proving he is not in the same class as the truly greats. All of the last 2 weeks, most Colts fans were dissing the Saints, thinking this was an easy road to another ring, well guess what, THE SAINTS ARE MARCHING IN! Good for Reiss, I wish he was still at the Globe. I believe the Globe’s headline earlier today was predicting an easy Colt’s win. F you. This was an awesome Super Bowl, even the Who(although they haven’t put out a good album for over 20 years), were good. The Saints outplayed and outcoached the Colts tonight.
The end of the first half was a huge swing. The Saints ended up getting the field goal they lost on the td gamble(which I was ok with). I have a strange feeling that this was the Colt’s last best chance for a ring. After this rebuilding year, The Pats are ascending!

Hangover from not playing many minutes in the last x weeks?

Hahaha. I’m not sure benching him hurt… but it might stir up the Colts’ fans a little.

kind of

Yes, Manning choked. And I really, really dislike Manning with every bone in my body. But to be fair to him, when I watched the replay of the int (several times), I don’t think you can put the pick on his shoulders. Wayne gave up on the route, pure and simple. Unbelievably so. I thought I had seen that on my own when they showed the replay during the game itself, but just now on NFL Live I saw a better angle and it was absolutely clear, that one was on Wayne. The analysts on NFL Live said so as well. Instead of cutting strongly to the inside (to use his body to block out the defender), he ran sort-of inside but way too much downfield. That’s what let Porter get the inside position on him in order to make the pick.

GREAT job by Porter, btw…I’m not taking anything away from him. But for a veteran receiver like Wayne to make a “rookie”-type mistake on a route like that, at that point in the game, is inexcusable. (Though considering Peyton should have been picked off on his throw to the sidelines just a bit before, I don’t feel sorry for Manning one bit.)

by JohnPaul on Feb 8, 2010 1:26 AM EST up reply actions

i dislike Manning

but he didn’t choke….it was a bad read by him. he was getting pressured and on the quick slant, Wayne didn’t establish his inside position and Porter made a great move for the INT to the house.

and Colts fans weren’t talking shit. like most fans they thought they were going to win and so did I.

Choked

Well, i wrote this in the heat of the moment last night, with a head full of red wine. I haven’t seen the replay or analysis, so I’ll have to look into that. Great play by Porter.
By the way, I know there are a couple of nice, level headed people over there on the Colt’s page, but even this week they were trashing Brady, BB and the Pats, with unadulterated glee. I usually like to keep myself out of kicking anyone when they are down, but I am still simmering a bit form their classless invective.
I never thought the Colts were going to win and I called the pick before the drive started, which I barely realized until after the game 2 people form our gathering congratulated me on.
Also, let me somewhat rescind the statement that the Who were good, and i will simply say, i enjoyed them.

one guy from our place yelled it out as Manning dropped back

we all jumped up and screamed at the pick, and yelled the whole time Porter ran it back. Changed the whole rest of the game.

I think that with the way Drew played, I have no problem with him sharing that record with Tom. Two great performances. We may not have seen the end of Brees and the Saints. The loss to them this season is still a sore spot for me! I wonder when the Pats play the Saints again. Probably not this coming season. Anybody know for sure? I guess we can always kick their ass in the next Super Bowl. Great game- I told anybody and all those idiots on ESPN that the Saints would win by 14. Only that by my reasoning was if they crushed the Pats, they would do it to the Colts too!!

Those of you who think you know everything just annoy those of us who do!!

2013

If we don’t meet them in the SB first. NFC divisions are played on a 4 year rotation and we played the NFC South this season.
