dont like that the patriots have been quiet in free agency

I know that free agency has only began about a week ago and we have resign many pretty good player that fit this system, but i think the patriots need to get some playmakers on both ends to contend for the title. our offense and defense both have holes. We need veterans to fill them. Would rather trade some of those picks for proven players. Our defense is young enough.

Offense- We definetly need another receiver with welker out for a while. I say we go after steve breaston to fill that void. Running back is another concern. I liked the idea of getting thomas jones. to late on that one. maroney has to go and fred taylor and sammy morris cant last a whole season.  Tight end is the last concern. I know we dont use our te to receive much and i am glad we got ride of watson, but who is going to replace him. I guess we will fill that in the draft.

Defense- We did resign wilfork and bodden which was the biggest thing for us to do. But is that enough. I dont think so. Our defense might have been 10th ranked last year but they didnt impress me. And the didnt impress belichek either. He didnt have the confident in them to make a stop late in the game for a win. We went for in or 4th down in a couple cases were in the past we would relie on our defense. We all know that adalius thomas doesnt fit this team for either trade him or cut him if need be. Our defense is to young and need a couple of veterans to mess with the youth. Our rookies from last year didnt look very good last year and either need like to develop or just arent that good. We had no pass rusher last yr and that has not change yet this off season. I know that julius peppers was to expensive but we didnt even go after kampman or vanden bosch.  I would love to see either on on the outside for us. And on top of that we let the jets get cromartie for a 3rd round pick. I know he has off field problems but he brings in on the field. He was all pro just a couple of years back and is a great man corner. I think we needed a playmaker like him along with bodden. We have no depth at corner and they got beat many times last year over and over again. Last we need a veteran safety in the back. Since we last rodney out defense and leadership went way down. I do like meriweather but he always go after the big play or hit. He got beat multiple times again the saints in zone coverage. And if its about salary i would rather have not signed wilfork and fill multiple holes that we have. Wilfork is a beast but he can do it alone and is strong again the run. We are gicing quarterbacks to much time and they are killing us.

So overall i know we are good team but do we have enough to win it in all. I say no as of right now. Other teams seem to be getting better and we are just sticking with the same team the got wipped by baltimore last year.

Hmm...

…Steve Breaston would cost us a 1st rounder to get- I’d much rather get Brandon Marshall if we had to give up our 1st rounder.

Thomas Jones signed with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Kampman and Vanden Bosch are 4-3 DEs- that translates to them being 3-4 OLBs. Kampman tried being a DE in a 3-4 this past year and failed miserably.

I wouldn’t have minded kicking the tires on Cromartie, but he hasn’t played too well since his injury. He’s more of an Asante type player- goes for the homer run. However, he misses a lot and gives up a lot of big plays. That’s something we’ve been trying to cut down on.

We can look at some teams and say, “Oh yeah, they’ve improved a LOT.” But have they?

Jets have lost Thomas Jones and are banking on Shonne Greene being amazing. They’ve signed Cromartie, but they lost Lito Sheppard. Upgrade? Maybe. Worth a third rounder (possibly a 2nd rounder if he plays a lot) to “upgrade” that position by a little bit? Not in my opinion.

The Dolphins overpaid fro Dansby, who is an instant upgrade in the middle…however, their NT is suspended for the first half of the season, they’ve lost their safeties and they still have no offensive weapons beyond Brown and Williams. Sure, 1 position got better, but a bunch got worse.

Look at us- nothing has gotten worse, except ARGUABLY DE (Green vs Wright/Pryor/Brace)- and that was a position we were planning on upgrading in the draft anyways. I’m happy with where we are.

There’s lots of time to go.

My money is on Kraft nixing any talk of getting Cromartie.

Kraft is BIG on character, and Cromartie has myriad illegitimate children. Kraft has exercised his power before in forcing the release of players with similar character problems. I can’t imagine he would have allowed the team to pursue a player with that kind of background, and Belichick probably knew that without even asking him.

I'd rather have Miles Austin than Marshall.

Marshall (6-4 230, 4.56 40 time) is a 1st round tender, Austin (6-3 214, 4.34 40 time) is a 1st and 3rd.
He’s almost as big and tall, faster, and has great hands.

Forget all of that because I’d love to see Jones’ face if we took him.

And he doesn't have Marshall's personality issues...

I don’t see why people would assume Marshall would behave any better under Belichick than he would under Belichick junior McDaniels.

Didn't you see the character difference between McDaniels and Belichick?

Belichick is a master planner who keeps his mouth shut. McDaniels is ebullient passionate, albeit talks too much sometimes.

by Give Me on Mar 11, 2010 5:18 PM EST up reply actions

There's a difference, though

Belichick already owned the locker room; McDaniels had to come into a new place and earn it. He talked them up and for the first half of the season they responded pretty well; then injuries and age hit and it went downhill. If Hoodie didn’t already have that locker-room ownership, especially among the vets, he’d probably have to change his style too – more ebullience, as such.

What McDaniels did need, however, was his players to buy into his “team-before-individuals” Parcells/Belichick NE-style ethos. Cutler didn’t get it, and he was shipped out for a QB that did understand. Marshall didn’t get it, and he’s probably going to be turfed out too. That’s why I don’t think Marshall will fit into a Belichick team – he might come to NE, but he’s going to want it to be all about him again. Hoodie won’t accept that.

Austin is doomed.

Big reasons that people play really well are mostly to do with lack of game film to study. Austin is a great example. I don’t think he’ll do crap next year.

by satsunada on Mar 11, 2010 2:44 AM EST up reply actions

He's big and he's quick...

even if he has tendencies on film, he’s still going to be 6’3" and a 4.34 runner. He’s got decent hands (hard to fake those), so between all that, he ought to be productive.

Not like he was though, many receivers have what you just listed

Does Austin have a better team? Maybe. But I don’t think he’s a viable threat after the season due to game film and coverage reassignments. Kinda like what happened to Moss after early 2007

Maybe 'many' receivers do...

but most of them are locked up for many years in exchange for oodles of cash and/or are 30+ years of age.

We might as well just get Golden Tate with the 1st rounder if we are going to get a reciver with a 1st rounder

I mean, he already did Patriots Offense 101, and he will make an immediate impact. We have THE oldest offense in the league, so I would be imperative to get younger just like we did on defense. Also, we can play around with the phrase Tate&Tate

Don't let the media drive your bus

New England has never been a team that completes it’s off season in the first month, regardless of what other teams are doing and what the media is saying – there is no reason to pass too much judgement at this point.

They also have a plan. (Just like the Cylons.)
Every team has holes to fill every off season, historically speaking very few make the superbowl off moves they make in February.

They’ve resigned key players from the rotser.
They are kicking the tire on ‘value’ free agents who can add depth and skill without costing too much.
They have a stock pile of picks in the next 2 years drafts to take advantage of the best situations in April

Whether that is trading up, trading down, trading out or trading for players – they are going to be well positioned.

The more they can do to shore up the 2nd and 3rd levels of the roster now, the more aggressive they can be in going for impact players in April

by JonnyNYC on Mar 10, 2010 11:27 AM EST reply actions

Indeed...

In fact, the biggest offseason moves to pick up veterans under Belichick has never been this early. Who would be the best vet pickups in the Hoodie New England era? I’d wager Corey Dillon and Randy Moss – and both those guys were traded for around draft-time. Stress not, Pulpiteers.

Staying put

i am fine with waiting and getting 2nd or 3rd tier veteran players that can make an impact. but i think we do need to get some veterans through free agency. Yes we have a lot of draft picks, but few of them will contribute right away. Now that we have Tom Brady we should get good compimentary player and make a run for it. Now just be a good but not great team. Do i think we can win it this the same team per say as last year with brady being healthier and rookies having more experience. There is a very small chance.

by CELTICSNATION1 on Mar 10, 2010 1:11 PM EST reply actions

What do you recommend the Patriots do?

This is an extremely weak Free Agency (bar the Patriots players we re-signed). It would cost us a couple draft picks or players to pick up some players- what players would you want?

by Richard Hill on Mar 10, 2010 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

The Pats got veterans via free agency...

It just happened that their names were Vince Wilfork, Tully Banta-Cain and Leigh Bodden.

If the Pats can get to the playoffs on the back of the 2009 roster, why are people doom-preaching with more or less exactly the same roster, but with the addition of four top-53 draft picks? I’d have figured people would be happy… Brady’s healthy, the 2009 draft crop (which already looked pretty good) will have a year’s worth of experience under their belt, and the Pats get to choose a swag of good rookies in the best draft crop in the last… 10 years? 20 years?

by Comedic.Sans on Mar 10, 2010 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

The way I see it, we have to replace a few key players:

1) Jarvis Green. Can the Pats get someone better with one of those four picks? I think it’s likely.
2) Ben Watson. Can the Pats get someone who will be as effective as Watson was for them with one of those four picks? I think it’s likely.
3) Adalius Thomas. Can the Pats get someone who will be more effective than Thomas with one of those four picks? I think they could do that with a seventh rounder, so figure this one is all but guaranteed.

And then there are still several other sources that will lead to improvement:

1) Another pick left among the first 53.
2) This year’s rookies who actually played meaningful downs — Vollmer, Edelman, Pryor, Butler, and Chung — will be a little better for having spent some time learning the system.
3) McKenzie will be fully recovered from his injury and able to play.
4) Tate will be fully recovered from his injury and able to show us why he was considered a first-round talent before he got hurt.
5) Maybe Crable will survive the preseason.
6) Joey Galloway won’t play at all.
7) The Pats have a knack for finding depth, especially on the lines, in the fourth round and later.
8) Tom Brady’s shoulder will be fully recovered.
9) Tom Brady’s hand will be fully recovered.
10) Tom Brady’s ribs will be fully recovered.
11) The Pats had a ridiculously tough schedule last year. They’ll still have one of the tougher schedules this year, but it will be easier — and excluding divisional opponents, the only likely playoff contenders we play on the road are Pittsburgh and San Diego.

by RSNexile on Mar 10, 2010 6:40 PM EST up reply actions

That's how I'm seeing it, too

And there’s always the possibility that with the re-jig at D Co-ordinator that Belichick can actually salvage something useful from Adalius Thomas – he was a good pass-rusher a couple of years back, before Dean Pees’d all over him.

There are definitely holes to fill. But those holes are obvious (unlike the who’d-have-guessed-Galloway-would’ve-sucked-hole of 2009 at WR); the Pats have a bunch of draft picks to use on them; the gaps are in positions the Pats are fairly good at filling via the draft (DE, TE); in the deepest draft pool that I can remember.

by Comedic.Sans on Mar 10, 2010 7:48 PM EST up reply actions

My thought...

…is that Mike Wright and Myron Pryor are here to replace Jarvis Green.

And we could put Belichick himself on the field and get a better player than Adalius Thomas.

by Richard Hill on Mar 11, 2010 12:28 AM EST up reply actions

I think if BB pulled the same ego stroking he did last season with Sanders

with A Thomas this year, and let him play to his strengths, he might still be a quality player. Being made to look and feel like a clown will take the wind out of anyones sails, even if plenty of the blame was his own fault. The getting sent home for being late during a snow storm, I thought, was petty. But, maybe with Bill at the reigns, Thomas will have a better season. It could happen.

I think the 3W +- Pryor D line will be a good one, with TBC and ?rookie on the edges.

IIRC, he’s from Louisiana. Maybe he wants to play closer to home? Or maybe he’s just looking for what is likely to be his last big (and I use that term relatively) contract and thinks he can get more money somewhere else.

Quiet?

We signed the best nose tackle on the market, a linebacker who had 10 sacks last year, and the best free agent cornerback, and we’re going to sign one of the best guards and one of the best kickers soon enough. You might not count those because they’re all re-signings, but they’re still tremendously important and the team would have been significantly worse off had any of those guys left.

As for the rest, who would you have us sign? Peppers? Ridiculously overpaid. Thomas Jones? We already have enough 30+ year old RBs. Brandon Marshall? We have bigger needs than WR, the guy is a low-character locker room cancer, and he’s not worth giving up a first round pick we need for other positions and a third round pick we don’t even have.

It’s easy to say “we should sign this guy, or that guy, or the other guy” in a vacuum. Given who was available, the team’s needs, and the overblown price of possible trades or RFAs, the Pats have done very well.

Practi-what? Common who? This is the Interweb!

Al Gore invented this thing – it’s true!

Pats are in the process of finalizing a three way deal that brings Adrian Peterson, Vincent Jackson AND LT (the first one, he’s un-retiring and re-coking) to the Pats, sends Adalius Thomas and Sam Aiken to Seattle and gives all electoral votes in FL to Al Gore through 2016.

Even a guy as good as Manning would struggle without an O-line

Pettigrew might benefit – Manning would flick out a lot of TE-route passes if he was under pass-rush pressure – but the rest of them would be frustrated. Even Manning can’t pass when he’s flat on his back with a 300lber on him.
