In the first round of the NFL draft, the New England Patriots select......
????????????
I'm seriously pretty clueless. Colts fan here. Stampede Blue is having a community mock draft and I got stuck volunteered to draft for the Patriots because I hate admire the Patriots. In fact Wes Welker is my favorite non-colt player. True Story.
Now lets see here. Team needs. Quarterback, Wide receiver, Running back, Tight end, Linebacker, Defensive end, Defensive tackle. Pretty much everything sooooooo lets start.
I say that you should trade Tom Brady and Randy Moss plus your 1st rounder to move up and take Sam Bradford. Tom Brady is finished and Moss is doggin' it. :D
Ok, ok. In all seriousness, I have heard rumblings about Jared Odrick, Brandon Graham, Brian Price, Dan Williams and Sergio Kindle (alot on Sergio Kindle).
So give me your thoughts and feelings. Your top 5's, your team needs and who you realistically think the Patriots will draft.
Lets keep this civil people.
Go Colts!

lol. you dont like my poll? :D
We’re actually doing the first round and maybe the second. Anyone missing from my list that are on the Pats radar?
As long as we have Peyton (and no surprise gay onside kicks are made) we will always have a chance to win.
kindle might be a bust
not to high on him…he has the 3-4olb size BB likes but he seems to only have the speed rush on.
Jared is a same pick…plus the pats have a 2nd year player in shaun crable and last yr rookie mckenze as the 3-4OLB…hopefully they dont get injured again.

Plenty
I believe Belichick brought in Carlos Dunlap for an interview, although it is questionable if he fall to 22. Jerry Hughes is on the radar, as are Sean Weatherspoon and Ricky Sapp(stock dropping). The tweeners(DE/OLB) Belicheck has said, are difficult to project in the NFL so perhaps he is less likely to take one of them.
But don’t entirely bank on them going defense, given their needs at RB and WR. I’ve seen them picking Demaryius Thomas in some mock drafts, and Golden Tate(Stock rose after Combine) in others. Also, don’t sleep on an RB like Javid Best in that spot either.
Not to complicate things too much, but given the way this draft is shaping up, there is a strong possibility they will trade back as the picks after top end talent (after pick 18 or so) and up to about 65 are all on about the same level.
He might take a sure-fire looking guy (say, Odrick, depending on his interviews/workouts/etc)
and hope one of those tweeners like Kindle or Graham drops to the second. There’s quite a few of that type of guy in the first/second zone, so there’s a chance one or two of them will plunge. The second round of the 2009 draft had some pretty good LBs in it, but not so many good 3-4 DEs…

My top 5:
1. Jared Odrick – Ideal pick, he could fit in at DE and immediately contribute.
2. Charles Brown – Surprised? We need to upgrade our Tackle position and taking the player the Colts are salivating over would be prime. Take away from our competition by bettering a position that needs help.
3. Trent Wiliams – I doubt he drops this far, but he’s got potential.
5. Brandon Graham – Finally a DE/OLB. I think he’s more of a risk than the above players
5. Sergio Kindle – He’s at the bottom of the list for me. Graham has greater intangibles and size, but Kindle would also be a safe pick.
I'd be shocked
If they took a first round tackle. Especially given they have Light, Kaz (curious extension), and Sebass. Perhaps if a top tackle dropped to them at 22, they would be tempted to trade one of them to pick him up. I still find this scenario doubtful, considering the gaping holes at DT and OLB. I see them taking some outstanding physical specimen with big upside, such as Dunlap, or trading back to collect more picks.
I know Bill says take best available talent or you’ll be drafting for the same position again next year, but he’s never had holes like this before since he’s been with the patriots.
It might depend on Ron Brace
He looked a little lost in his rookie year, but if he shows the talent that the Pats figured he must have when they took him 40th overall, the ‘gap’ in the D-line might not be so bad, especially with Pryor and Wright being solid options. I’m not thrilled with the lack of a Seymour-ish guy (I’d personally take Odrick if he drops to 22), but on the flipside, if Brace does get his act together, I won’t be terribly upset if they don’t go D-line in the first, either.

I wouldn't be too surprised...
…but yeah, I’d prefer if they drafted a DE first. But the draft is so deep in OLBs that if we can’t get Odrick, there aren’t any first round DEs that I’d be interested in taking. The fact that there are so many OLBs of similar caliber means that I would have no problem taking a top tier OT in the first round, while taking the OLB later.
Also, we need a LOT of help at OT. Kaczur is now a back-up, Light is basically the same as Kaczur now. Vollmer is the only one I trust for a full season at OT, and he’s only a 2nd year player, which means who knows how consistent he’ll be. We definitely need help at OT.

would it be fair to say
you’re needs are ranked like this
1. Defensive end
2. Outside linebacker
3. Offensive tackle
4. Defensive back
5. Tight end
or reverse 4 and 5?
As long as we have Peyton (and no surprise gay onside kicks are made) we will always have a chance to win.
I'd reverse 4 and 5 on need...
…but not on draft picks. We tend to draft additional TEs late in the draft and it wouldn’t surprise me if we did the same again.
Here’s a generic summary of a Patriots draft:
1st round: D-Line, OT, OG
2nd round: O-Line, Secondary
3rd round: Secondary, WRs
4th round: Secondary, O-Line
5th round: D-Line, TEs, RBs, WRs
6th round: BPA
7th round: BPA/Projects

Pats are most likely to trade out of 22 in someway shape or form
- it could be a guy like Dunlap (Yoiks, please no) drops to say 15 and they move up
- it could be a guy they have top 5 drops to 8 or 10 and they move up
- it may well be at about pick 20, they see more value in players that are dropping for other teams, then they see in players for their own team. So they drop back, acquire later picks this year or next year.
- if they are staying at 22 though, I would think it’d be size on the edge, so Odrick or Kindle work well here or a OT/OG.
They have quantity at both positions, but they can certainly upgrade the quality.
