Unfortunately, there isn't a transcript of the conversation at this breakfast. Luckily, ESPNBoston's Mike Reiss is on the scene, tweeting away. Here are some of the highlights from Bill Belichick.
Patriots never really in the running for WR Anquan Boldin:
... Belichick saying team never really in on trade talks for Anquan Boldin ... Belichick anticipating 3 2nd-round picks to have trade value
Belichick believed that we'd have to trade a 2nd rounder to beat the Ravens' offer for Boldin. He's glad we held onto the 2nd rounders in this deep draft instead of trading them, due to the picks' increased values in this draft.
QB Tom Brady is not a good boxer:
Belichick, smiling, when asked what type of boxer he might compare Tom Brady to: "Someone who would get knocked out."
Self explanatory, but it's nice to see the Hood joking during the off-season.
ILB Tyrone McKenzie will participate in everything off-season:
...Tyrone McKenzie will fully participate in off-season drills...
Glad to see him back on his feet; his depth is a must for this upcoming year. From everything that's occurred this off-season, McKenzie seems to be a bright spot and a hope for next season.
Belichick loves Florida QB Tim Tebow:
"Great career, great player," Belichick said. "I think it’s obvious that within the last six weeks, that he’s worked on his mechanics and they’ve improved, which is a credit to him. He’s very coachable and he works very hard. I’m sure that whatever he feels he needs to do, he’ll work very hard at, whatever that is. Athletically, he tested very well at the combine, which you can see on the field."
I'm not surprised with what Belichick is saying about Tebow. The higher Tebow is valued and the more teams that value him so highly, the more value the 2nd round picks have- teams might overpay for the chance to grab Tebow and the Patriots may reap the benefits. Mike Reiss even acknowledges this possibility:
Left unsaid was whether the Patriots would pull the trigger if Tebow was available with one of their early picks.
It helps the Patriots if other clubs think that is a possibility, creating more value in a possible trade.
As great of a person Tebow is, I hope Reiss is correct and we're inflating Tebow's value. I wouldn't mind picking up an extra 3rd or 4th round pick if we trade down in the 2nd.
So all in all, it's an informative meeting. Belichick seems to be extremely focused on the Locker room and getting the right players in vocal leadership roles. I'm excited for our future.
