Josh Reed?

So Mike Reiss says Josh Reed is coming into Foxborough for a looksee.  Could be a solid WR in the set, somewhere between what Givens and Gaffney brought.

Not a deep threat, not super shifty, but good size, solid hands and very good route running.

He's a smart receiver, would be a good option for Tom.

With no experience @ TE right now and Wes not avail to somewhere around week 10 most likely getting a veteran receiver to help in the red zone and on 3rd downs would be a big help to the O, mees thinkz

Draft day trade

I wouldn’t be surprised if BB trades for some quality hands. I hear Greg Olsen can be had for a middle round tender (2nd, 3rd+ other). Good value for a former 1st rounder. It would be great if we could bring back Deion Branch for another mid rounder. Then your looking at Moss, Branch, Edelman, Reed, Tate (Brandon), Akien, Patten. If we use our early 2nd (if there) on Tate, the golden version, we would have the 2 Tates for the future. I hope we do get Golden with his 3 yrs experience in the Pats offense. I would also love to see a RB from another NFL team make it to Foxbrough. L. Washington NYJ, L. Mclain Batl, L White Tenn. All relatively young and can run the ball. May be too costly though as RFA goes.

Olsen probably doesn't fit the bill - he's not a blocker

I’m not sure I’d want to cough up draft picks for Deion Branch – he still hasn’t had a 1000 yard receiving season, and he hasn’t had a 16 game season since he left New England. He’s an injury risk, and I’d wager you could get more productive games out of a rookie you take with a mid-round pick than you could out of Branch. It’d be nice to have Branch for nostalgia purposes, but I’m not sure he’d be worthy as a player any more. And you’re not bringing him back as a tutor for the young guys – you’ve already got Patten for that.

I’m sure they’ll look pretty hard at Golden Tate in the second, especially if he drops to one of the later second-round picks. I’m not sure they’d pull the trigger, but they’ll look…

That would be a good thing.

Have him play our #3 during the beginning of the season, behind Moss and Edelman and as the season goes on, we’ll see where Tate stands up and how Welker is doing.

by Richard Hill on Mar 8, 2010 2:41 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I've heard he's more of a mid-to-long range receiver

who is physical enough to get yards after the catch. Hey, if BB likes him I’m willing to give him a shot even though I can’t say I’ve ever noticed him on the Bills.

Keep the faith!

He had the problem of being a mid-to-long range receiver...

on a team with a noodle-armed, no-name QB most of the time. Even then, the guy’s got some stats behind him – 331 receptions, 3575 yards @ 11.5 yards per receptions, with 10 TDs. He also has a bit of versatility – he was a running back for his first season at college, only change to WR for two seasons, and in his second season won the Fred Biletnikoff award for best college WR of the year. He’s smaller, but in a Golden Tate/Steve Smith (Carolina) kind of way.

It’s hard to be a WR when you’ve been quarterbacked by JP Losman (of the UFL, hah) and Trent Edwards (who was the third best QB of his draft… after JaMarcus Russell [ouch] and Brady Quinn [double ouch]).

oh I know...

Those two QBs, plus an inept coach turned Terrell Owens invisible. So it’s hard to pass too harsh of a judgment based on a player’s performance in that “system”.

Keep the faith!

Last time we grabbed a guy that came from that sort of environment it was Welker.

Last I saw that worked out pretty well.

QUARTERBACK WANTED: NFL receiver needs an NFL quarterback who can throw past 5 yard line. I’ve seen other teams (that aren’t the Bills) and have heard it’s possible. Willing to work hard for a chance to catch from a genuine NFL quarterback. Call Josh Reed.

Reed also comes in as a very good blocker

in the Anquan Boldin/ Hines Ward mould. That can’t be a bad thing, especially with guys like Welker and Edelman on the roster. With a big-blocking WR on the roster, some of those screens could go for TDs. Not to mention Reed’s good at over-the-middle into contact receptions, and can bust tackles and break out on short passes.

He’d be a very good compliment to deep-Moss and short-Welker/Edelman. I would really like a Reed pickup, actually.

Reed is no Welker

That said, he’ll put up good numbers if we get him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was better in our system than Gaffney, given what we’d be asking of him.

by RSNexile on Mar 8, 2010 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

Not comparing the styles of players.

Just the opportunity to shine when you have a genuine quarterback to throw to you.

The talk when Welker came in was focusing on his stats in the offensive powerhouse that was Miami. In New England with Tommy tossing the ball you could see he was a better player than his stats showed.

Maybe the same for Reed when the QB isn’t Losman or Edwards.

Reed also played with Bledsoe his first two years

Granted, Bledsoe is no Tom Brady, but he was a good if usually unspectacular QB. But that’s the kind of player Reed is — good if unspectacular. He’s not going to catch 100 balls and he’s not going to be the clutch receiver who always gets open when Brady is in trouble, but as our third receiver, he’d be good for 50 catches, 600 yards, and a couple of TDs.

by RSNexile on Mar 8, 2010 5:37 PM EST up reply actions

Most WRs aren't great as rookies/second-year players

and he’d only had literally two years in the position – he was a running back his first year in college and declared for the draft early.

I quite like him to be a Gaffney-like producer, and show up as a blocker for screens. I really wouldn’t mind him paving the road for Welker/Edelman on bubble-screens and the like, and he’s a Red Zone threat because he’s quite physical and goes after the football.

He hasn't gotten much better

Not that he had many opportunities, granted, but if you’re expecting more than good output for a #3 receiver from him, you’re kidding yourself.

by RSNexile on Mar 8, 2010 8:34 PM EST up reply actions

If you're going by stats, sure

But then going by that same reasoning, Terrell Owens was infinitely worse last year than he was in previous years. That system is a WR-killer.

I just remember Wes Welker having next-to-nothing stat-wise before coming to NE, too. Reed would fit in between Welker/Edelman and Moss in a pretty interesting way – good blocker, good after contact, a tackle-breaker and with good into-contact route-running. He’s worth having a look at – if anyone can extract maximum value out of the guy, it’s Brady.

True, but a third receiver on the Pats is a little different than other teams

at least, it was back in the days of “Brady’s favourite receiver is the open one”. Gaffney had a couple of 10 catch, 100 yard playoff games, after all. A third receiver with break-out ability is always very useful.

A third receiver is a third receiver

If he occasionally has a huge game, great. But third receivers occasionally have huge games — that doesn’t mean they’re not third receivers.

I'm pretty sure you guys are arguing the same thing?

He’s a capable third guy who will produce in our system.

I like the idea of Welker having a good blocking WR between him and the goal.

He leads WR with YAC as it is. One more blocker and he may be through the roof.

BB is smart

SMP brings up the point I fully agree with regarding Wes Welker.
BB doesn’t waste time with guys he doesn’t want – after seeing Reed twice a year for what 7 yrs…he’s seen something he likes for sure.

To me Reed can at least be what Gaffney was possibly more. A reliable option who can get open and make touch catches. I agree he’s not a 80-100 catch guy, he definitely would add value to the WR unit. How much value is TBD, but value added where value is needed.

keying on value – Reed isn’t going to be very expensive I wouldn’t think either, so low risk here also.

Can sign Reed and another Vet WR if they want.

by JonnyNYC on Mar 9, 2010 1:30 PM EST reply actions

The risk to reward ratio should be enough to sign the guy.

The Pats wouldn’t be asking the guy to be the centerpiece of the offense. That being said, I think Belichick has made the comment about his ability to break tackles and get extra yards. I like the idea of having a blocking WR set out to Edelman/Welkers side. Just thinking about how corners would react is kind of funny.

by Tmiller on Mar 9, 2010 6:47 PM EST reply actions

I have these hilarious little visions...

of watching a slot corner line up against Welker and try to chase him down on a slant or a flat route… and run smack bang into a biggish, blocking WR running at full-tilt in the opposite direction. And the Welker keeps running, now with no pursuit…
