Globe is reporting that Foxsports is reporting, that Jay Glazer is saying D.Burgess is re-signed for a 1yr deal with NE.
I'm saying.....YAY! I hardly feel like this move carries too much significance at it's present value.
I assume it's a low risk/high reward type contract, with plenty of performance bonuses for Derrick and little guaranteed cash for the Pats.
DB had 5 sacks last year of which I would suggest the majority were of the "opportunity found" or garbage sack variety. I didn't feel he had many "opportunity created" sacks, where his presence and pressure took over a portion of the game, forced blocking adjustments or really did much of anything.
That said, 5 sacks is 5 sacks. In case you don't know, the Pats need sacks/a pass rush.
There's always a chance a player improves in year two of any system, I'd wager a greater chance in NE (what of it? I'm not biased!) and if the contract is structured correctly there is really nothing to dislike about the deal.
But enough about the deal, lets have a poll about the player....
Poll
Will Derrick Burgess improve or regress from his 5 sack total of 2009?
Yes. He will be a stronger pass rusher in '10, getting at least 6 sacks (86 votes)
Yes. He will get at least 6 sacks....sacks of White Castle burgers! (8 votes)
Yes and No. His sack total won't improve, but his value to the team will be stronger and he'll make more positive plays in '10 (54 votes)
No chance, he's 32 and doesn't have the speed or power to get past the OL (9 votes)
No, he'll play at about the same level as last year (27 votes)
No, and he won't make it out of camp either (8 votes)
