What the hell is Mark Farinella's problem?

Greetings Pats fans.  I'm kleph from the SB Nation blog covering all things Alabama Crimson Tide Roll Bama Roll. We are busting with pride that one of the key members of our 2009 National Championship squad - Brandon Deaderick - was drafted by your fine franchise and are hoping he goes on to a long and storied career with you guys.

Since it's common for us college football fans to lose track of our favorite players after they enter the pro ranks I went to work cobbling together a roundup on how our boys are doing at the rookie mini camps. Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald used to be the beat writer covering the Crimson Tide for the Birmingham paper so he's been keeping us on top of the main stuff involving Brandon.

But I also stumbled  upon the deranged ramblings of Mark Farinella who somehow has a gig writing for some paper called The Sun Chronicle. Normally I'd let this kinda stuff pass but his jabs at Brandon are not just misguided, they are patently offensive.

Right before the 2009 season, Brandon was returning with his girlfriend to his apartment which is located several miles from the University of Alabama campus when a guy tried to mug them. The incident happened at about 10 p.m. at night and Brandon had just pulled into the parking lot when the assalant approached the driver's side window of the car.

"I pulled (in) and I saw him come up from the side. I tried to get the car pulled over," he said. "By the time I realized it was for real, the only thing I could do was go for the gun. Nothing goes through your mind. You react. That's what you do."

The result was Brandon got shot, with the bullet going down through his arm and into his leg near his hip. Thankfully the injury was minor but its not hard to envision this incident ending a massive tragedy.

What stuns me is that this Farinella clown uses this incident as a pretense to question Brandon's character claiming that "Belichick is going to have the NFL Security goons watching this kid day and night." A young man is attacked going to his apartment and injured, luckily not severely, then some hack of a columnist finds it necessary to cast aspersions on the victim

(Oh, and lets not forget, Brandon was back on the field just two days after being shot and actually played in the Virginia Tech game. And, if all that weren't enough, his grandmother died the week leading up to the game and he missed practice to travel home for her funeral.)

That's just Farinella's way of introducing this player to his readers. He follows it up by relating an incident from 2007 when Brandon and two other players were involved in a fight in front of a bar in downtown Tuscaloosa and subsequently arrested for  criminal mischief, resisting arrest and giving police a false name. It was a massive lack of judgement and Coach Saban made it clear he wasn't going to put up with it.

The result has been that for the last two years there have been no incidents of any note involving Brandon or any other Alabama player - a period of notable on-field  success from the football team. But Farinella sees fit to dredge up this arrest and then suggest that it is in some way connected to the shooting last year.

That odious reasoning isn't as egregious as Colin Cowherd's comments in the wake of Sean Taylor's death, but they only differ in terms of degree. Using past events to paint nefarious meanings on completely unrelated incidents is reprehensible for anyone, much less a figure considered an authority on the subject in question.

Part of the reason I feel compelled to write this is to address the reckless character assassination on this writer's part in some little way. If I can let my fellow SB Nation denizens in on what the actual story is here, I'm hoping that will make some difference.

For the most part we Alabama fans understand that this hack's opinion isn't necessarily the view of New England fans as a whole. It's alarming that any sports writer would see fit to cast such accusations at a young player with threadbare reasoning to back it up.

Brandon made a huge contribution to the squad that rolled up two undefeated regular seasons and claimed the championship title in January. We are proud to have him as part of the long and storied Crimson Tide tradition and feel lucky he's gone on to an NFL team noted for similar gridiron excellence. He should be able to provide a valuable contribution to your squad and we're hoping he finds a way into the starting lineup at some point.

Please feel free to drop by over at RBR and keep us posted on Brandon's progress up there in Foxboro.

The views expressed in these FanPosts are not necessarily those of the writers or SBNation.

When I 1st herd we drafted him I also read about the shooting.

My 1st thoughs on this guy is Im happy we have a strong player like this on our team.
I never following stories attacking patriot player because there usually wrong.
BB knows what he is doing when he drafts a guy.

I'm not holding anything against the guy. I'm pumped to have him.

Sounds like a tough football player, and while he’s not a lock to make the team, I have a feeling he will.

Seems like the kind of a guy that rises to challenges.

well, i need to clarify...

i haven’t seen anything on this blog that was any way similar to farinella’s asinine pontifications. i posted this partially to ensure you guys have the whole story on deaderick’s background but also to possibly get a glimmer of understanding from ya’ll on why this guy would actually print this kind of ridiculous garbage.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate the contribution here.

As far as the media goes, there are far too many of them that sway from reporting the facts to making wild conjectures. There are plenty of college guys that come in with red flags. Not isolated incidents, but a long history of bad behavior. Even those guys can change, but there I thinks it’s fair to wave the flags as the guy gets drafted.

In some of the other cases, they should stop to ask, “Who here hasn’t done something they regretted in the past?” When they see no hands raised, they should simply tell them to, “STFU!” ’Nuff said.

In the case of New England (and New York) sports,

you could just say “there are far too many of them” and stop right there.

There’s only so much you can do w/ a Belichick presser, the Pats severely restrict media access to players (especially rookies), and — like media everywhere today — they’re lazy. So farinella did what so many in that crowded Boston field do: take one interesting fact in isolation and another interesting fact in isolation that seems to make a pattern with the first one and call it a trend. If you (kleph) really do plan on following Deadrick’s career through the New England sports media, you’d better get used to it.

i took, maybe, an hour to compose that post...

and fill it chock full of links to reports on the incidents. yes, i do have a familiarity with the subject matter but none of the searches i did to find those pages would be any different than if i was doing research stone cold (“brandon” “deaderick” “arrested” "2007). and i did it on my own time, it not like i get paid to do this stuff.

yes, i understand that belichick has draconian media rules. but guess what other coach i know does as well? nick saban. and i note that the herald’s ian rapoport has done pretty well dealing with the policies of both. we were damn disappointed when he left the birmingham news.

because, in my experience, when information is restricted from the official source doesn’t mean a reporter can use that as an excuse to be a slack in his work. there are lots of ways to paint a more complete portrait of a rookie player such as deaderick without relying on slapdash stereotypes that aren’t even backed by the most cursory background checks.

deaderick made some missteps in his time in tuscaloosa. he’s been very up front about that. but he also buckled down and took care of business and did his best to make up for it. a responsible journalist – and i have more than a passing familiarity in what that might constitute – would make an effort to learn that story and transmit it to their readers. farinella fails on all of these accounts.

I wouldn't worry about it

Belichick clearly passed on Dez Bryant, and it can only be because of the discipline/off-field issues – he was clearly BPA at 22 and then at 24. The fact Hoodie bounced back twice down the draft board to avoid the guy suggests Belichick didn’t want a headcase.

Similarly, he avoided other guys with discipline problems – selecting Cunningham over his more highly touted teammate Carlos Dunlap. Dunlap had more impressive physicals and college stats, so presumably it was a discipline issue there – Dunlap was reputed to be lazy and take plays off.

If anyone’s a ‘risk’ it’s Aaron Hernandez, who tested positive at least once for marijuana during his college career. Yet I’m sure Belichick is very aware of Hernandez’s character via the Urban Meyer connection in Florida. In much the same way, Belichick would know all about Deaderick via Nick Saban. Given Hoodie avoided several guys due to character issues, and then took two supposed character risks from programs run by Hoodie conspirators, it’d suggets to me that he doesn’t seem them as being likely off-field problems.

those are all justifiable concerns...

and put in proper context. does it seem so outrageous to ask that a working sports columnist do the same?

because outside of one single incident deaderick has done nothing to warrant being labeled a player with discipline issues. and to suggest that having the misfortune of being shot during a botched robbery is a legitimate grounds to raise such concerns is abhorrent.

That might involve them actually doing work!

Googling one incident and spinning it out into a “shock, horror!” story is far less work than actually collating resources and making an accurate representation of the facts, and putting together a shock story gets more readership than a “Deaderick’s a nice guy who was in the wrong place at the wrong time” story.

One makes him out to be a walking headline, TO-style, and the other makes him out to be… well, an average 7th round draft pick NFL hopeful.

Lazy, sensationalist journalism, on my internets?!

Which would be a problem or a surprise, except that it’s “And in your newspaper, and your local TV news, and your major cable news, and your national network news, and even your international BBC/NPR!” It’s a perfecta.

I think you may be missing my point.

I’m not trashing you, I’m trashing Farinella — and most of the dory-load of Boston media types who have little to work with and little inclination to work with what they have. Come around any time — the more the merrier (and usually, the better).

nope. i understood.

all of my comments have been to clarify or expand upon points in the discussion. there hasn’t been anything posted in these comments i would consider a blast at me personally.

in fact, every single one of y’all have been supportive and helpful – particularly in offering insights into the situation we bama fans just wouldn’t have at our disposal.

and, fyi, we tweeted rapoport and he tweeted back saying he’d have a word with farinella on the matter. damn, we miss that guy.

Ian Rapoport

has been exponentially better than the Patriots beat writer he replaced at the Herald, John Tomase. There’s no comparison.

by Marima on May 4, 2010 8:31 AM EDT up reply actions

we've been pretty lucky down here...

as the guy that replaced him has really stepped up his game but, yeah, ian was all over everything that needed to be known and when he got it on the record, you knew it was solid. more importantly, he was not afraid to write an important story even if he knew he was going to get browbeaten by coach for it. losing rapoport was as tough as losing a star player in the draft. you know it’s inevitable and you really feel great for him, but damn it sucks.

yeah...

i kinda cringed at posting a local tv news segement. but they did a good job of just letting brandon explain what happened. i think you can judge his story on it’s own merits from his explanation in that report.

This seems like pretty gross failure to do due diligence on Farinella's part.

“Oh, he got shot! CHARACTER ISSUE! Must be part of a gang.”

At worst, he made a foolish decision that could have gotten him or his girlfriend hurt in a heat-of-the-moment thing. At best, he saved both of their lives. In neither scenario does it mark him as anything but brave.

I know some guys that have been shot....

Is the US military a gang? I guess some people might feel that way unfortunately. I also know plenty of places where the nearest police is at LEAST 30 minutes away. If someone breaks into your house, the body will be cooling off by the time the police arrive. Usually it’s a choice of yours or theirs.

Not a huge advocate of guns in the hands of all the masses, but I know the criminals have them and the rest can still make up their minds on their own. I don’t automatically associate guns and gangs. Plaxico got shot for being an idiot. Gangs had nothing to do with it.

just to clarify...

brandon was shot by someone else holding a gun on him. he did not have one.

and there was no weapon involved in the 2007 incident which was entirely and completely unrelated.

I know

Some people just assume that being shot means you did something wrong or it was an escalation (I pulled a knife, so he pulled a gun.) Sometimes bad things happen to good people. Go figure.

We were just talking about this...
Still puzzling to me, however, is the reaction of a hardcore element of fans to news of player’s transgressions. Apparently it’s fine and dandy for players to come to Foxboro with rap sheets because the Flying Elvis somehow magically washes their souls of all sins.

Mark Farinella has had some terrific pieces on the Patriots over the years, but this article was downright odd, unnecessarily negative and of dubious content.

He talks about players coming to Foxboro with “rap sheets.” Who exactly has a rap sheet? Hernandez failed a drug test at Florida and was suspended for one game in his three year career as a Gator. No criminal charges were filed against him and he wasn’t convicted of any crime. No rap sheet him.

Jermaine Cunningham was charged once with misdemeanor battery but those charges were dropped due to lack of evidence. No rap sheet on him either.

Each of the incidents he refers to took place three years ago in 2007. (Unlike Farinella, I’m not holding Deaderick responsible for being shot by a robber.) He doesn’t say WHY Deaderick was arrested in 2007, and why he resisted, but the charges against him stemmed from the arrest itself with the cracked police windshield.

Farinella then lists eight draftees – including the top pick – of stellar character, but leaves that paragraph floating on it’s own to go back to moaning about how the days of the Patriots drafting for character are long gone.

Let’s see: 8 stellar characters and 3 with one incident each. Even the three with “incidents” have no business being compared with Christian Peter who had an extensive history of sexual assaults. The tone of the article, and the ‘evidence’ he backs it up with, don’t match with reality at all. That’s what’s puzzling me. He’s got a beef with something, but there’s nothing here to chew on.

Keep the faith!

by Marima on May 2, 2010 8:03 PM EDT reply actions

Unless he's talking about people who Pats fans *wanted* pre-draft...

in which case it might be a reference to the “draft Dez Bryant!” crowd? I’m struggling to see it otherwise.

Given the Pats passed on Bryant, though, it’s a little odd to be so bitter about. It’s not like the Pats have the record (heh, record) of the Bengals.

He's talking about Bryan Cox, Dillon, Moss, etc

The ‘veterans with issues’ program…

Regardless of what he’s talking about it seems pretty clear to me that he’s a bit angry at the Pats (lack of access) and perhaps is taking it out via biased, poor journalism.
