Even that first rounder will likely be with the Bears

who will then trade it to the Jets, who will proceed to blow the selection entirely and draft a fullback…

Unless that FB is a guy like LeRon McClain

You could argue that the guy is worth a first-rounder. Although it helps he’s a FB who can play HB pretty well when necessary.

Well, if that running back roulette produces a 12-4 season I'm all for it.

If it just kills any momentum, though, like what USC was running last year, than it’s utterly pointless and you need just one back. That’s what the Chargers did for years, adn look what happened to LT…

Like this:

“I was asked to play ’09 out, and that they would address contract after the uncapped year,” Mankins said.

2009 was capped, 2010 is uncapped. So if they address it after the UNCAPPED year, that would be after 2010 season.

Yet there is a contract out there, or so they say.

Mike Reiss quoted the...

…agent:

Mankins would not provide details of negotiations, or what he is seeking financially in a contract. His agent, Frank Bauer, also declined to discuss details, although revealed that the main reason a deal hasn’t been reached is that the Patriots’ final offer is “20 percent lower than Jahri Evans’ deal with the Saints.”

Evans, a Pro Bowl guard, signed a seven-year, $56.7 million contract with the Saints in May.

ok here is what i think.

as a patriot fan i like mankins, i think he is worth signing. but you know what the pats arent doing anything against the rules they arent forcing him to play for us they are just abiding by the rules mankins union bargained for last time at the table. so in 08 in his rookie contract mankins said he played for less value then he deserved well he should of thought about that when he signed a contract. are teams supposd to just rip up contracts that players sign every time a different players signs a bigger deal???? i know i am ranting but this stuff shouldnt happen and now we are most likely going to lose one of the best guards in the league and the best guard on our team.

by brady12mvp3 on Jun 14, 2010 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Well its Mankins call really

He felt he was underpaid based on his performance.
He listened to one negotiation, apparently last year, and played on.

Now this year he’s saying, “enough talk” I want a contract I feel I’m worth
And apparently the sides are disagreeing on that worth…

by JonnyNYC on Jun 15, 2010 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Especially when Sir Thomas of Brady needs a contract.

Mankins is our best guard, but we’ve got guards. Who is going to fill Brady’s shoes if he is gone? We’re a little thin in All-Pro, MVP, Super-Bowl winning quarterbacks…..

Apparenetly that was a misquote:

via Reiss’ Twitter.

So it's not that the Patriots didn't try to do a deal and fulfill what they said.

It’s that Mankins doesn’t like the deal and thinks he’s worth more.

He was tendered at a 1st and 3rd and nobody bit, so a trade would likely be less than that. 1st and low rounder, 1st alone, or a 2nd and change if it is going to happen.

Or the Patriots could get nastier by basically holding onto their rights to him for the year (basically unpaid for Mankins) and then letting him walk free in a year that may have no football.

yep...

..that’s why I think Mankins speaks crap. Pats said they will adrees the contract and they did. And in my book a contract over 6 millino/year is more than nice. Considering Welker gets less than 4 milliion it’s rridiculously good. Sorry, in my book a guard is a first guy to drop..after the long snapper… :)

the Pats are working onTB's contract...

…they can think on Moss and Welker contracts too. It’s not just cap. If you pay to your guard 8 million, what would you pay for the 3 time SB winner QB, the WR with the most TD, or the WR with the most receprtions in the last 3 years. The contract they make this year effects the next 3-4 years at least….

Same here.

Mankins is taking an “I’m getting paid what I want whether it’s here or elsewhere tact”. Ok, fine, you can do that.

You could also wait up to two years to get paid if there is no football next year, with fines being assessed against that future pay for not showing up. They can do that.

I think he is getting some piss poor advice considering the uncertain climate.

Get a load of up front money, just in case, and you still would be making much more per year than us working stiffs. Oh, but it’s always about getting MORE….

Especially since he supposedly wants to be traded...

He can’t get traded until he signs the offer sheet. So delaying it until after the Pats cut his offer (as they are entitled to do, and said they would) and then demanding a trade makes no sense at all. At the very least, he could’ve signed the $3+M offer and demanded a trade; it’d give him a better leverage against whatever team finally ended up with him for a long-term contract negotiation. Now some team might be encouraged to trade for him at $1M as a one-year loaner deal; get him for one year, pay him a low rate, then cut him loose. No longterm deal for Mankins, and some team gets a one-year discount Pro Bowl level Guard.

Sad it came to this. he’s good as gone. I feel like I gotta side with the patriots on this one. They fulfilled their end of the deal but Mankins didnt like the deal. if it comes down to signing your guard or qb i’m taking brady every day. just a though, dumervil signed his tender, trading mankins for him with maybe a 2nd or 3rd thrown in seems like a good trade for the pats. any thoughts?

This is from the...

Boston Globe:

The sides have been at an impasse for some time. The Patriots’ last offer, which has has been on the table for “a significant period of time”, was a five-year deal worth approximately $7 million per season and would place the two-time Pro Bowler comfortably among the top five paid guards in the NFL, according to a league source.

Here is the full article

by frogfromthemud on Jun 14, 2010 8:16 PM EDT reply actions

This is what separates the Patriots from the rest of the NFL.

The Saints signed their All-Pro guard to an NFL-high salary at guard, because they just won the Super Bowl and are feeling all warm and fuzzy about their players. That team was also built on a number of young, currently restricted but soon to be unrestricted free agent, players. That few extra million might not seem like a bunch right now, for a great players basking in the shine off the Lombardi Trophy. In 3 years, though, when other big contracts are up, not only will those younger guys, now (maybe) legitimate studs in the game, expect “their share” (because now there is a precedent for paying top dollar), but the team is also out several million that it shouldn’t.

The value gig gets a bad rap in some arenas, but occurrences like this, viewed with the Pats’ past decade as a backdrop, reminds us of its true genius.

by nbradley07 on Jun 14, 2010 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions

He wants more, thats ok...

..but he speaks BS and he contradicts the facts. I’m not saying he “lies”, Because, in his defense, he does not seem smart enough to recognize the lack of truth in his statement.

by frogfromthemud on Jun 15, 2010 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Eh - not sure how much is BS or in contradiction really

he played out ‘09, played out his rookie contract with very little complaint beyond requesting a long term deal. And now he feels he’s not being taken care of.
Whether thats because of Vince’s deal, and Tom’s potential deal, or because he’s not seeing the $$ he wants based on the market – he’s not happy with how things are going.

Even if the Pats told him they’d work things out after the uncapped year, it seems as though he doesn’t want to wait another year at the max tender, which is still less then he feels he can earn.

If the Pats offered him a 1 yr deal at the $6.5m plus incentives maybe it’s different, I don’t know.

Right now he’s got some lofty figure in his head for a contract, the Pats aren’t biting where he wants them too, and they are preventing him from talking with other teams.

by JonnyNYC on Jun 15, 2010 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions

the pats arent preventing him

league rules are preventing him. the pats are doing nothing wrong they said they would offer him a contract and they did. 5 years 35 million isnt chump change for a guard. he didnt even counter it he just pouted and ran his mouth. yesterday i was bummed cause i didnt wanna lose mankins today i am glad he might be gone and i hope the pats make him play this year for 1.54 million.

by brady12mvp3 on Jun 15, 2010 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Pats prevented him via the max tender

which requires teams to give up 1st and 3rd round picks to sign him.

I agree it’s within the pats rights to do that, and it’s smart business.
I also can agree with Mankins being pissed at that because it does seriously effect is ability to get other offers.

Pats can’t make him play, he’s not under contract. And while I agree $5M a year isn’t chump change, it’s economies to scale for him and every other NFL players so the total annual sum is really a non factor.

by JonnyNYC on Jun 15, 2010 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

the pats are playing by the rules

that his union provided them.
the pats offered him a 5 year deal aveageing 7.1 million a year when they said they would they did and it was on the table for awhile and if mankins didnt like it why didnt he counter at least once?
the patriots have done zero zilch nada wrong in this situation and after the remarks mankins made as far as i am concerned he can go pound sand.
they offered him a top 5 contract for his position and it wasnt enough for him i guess.

I don’t feel like Mankins is out of line for saying he isn’t getting what he feels he’s worth. Everyone’s got that right, regardless of it’s warrant.

The comments about living up to your word, well I just don’t know enough about ‘the words’ that were spoken to comment either way.
That certainly doesn’t help his cause, that’s for sure.

It really sucks the way this is turning out, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t surprised. I mean all the conversation about Vince, then it moves to Brady next – I mean the Pats were not giving the media ANY news about Logan, that’s never good.

Ever notice there are two types of player philosophies?

First are the guys that KNOW in their bones that the NFL is a business and the love the organization throws them is just a temporary blanket that can be snatched off in a heartbeat, a bone snap or a few too many missed tackles.

Other guys look to contract negotiations as an emotional assessment of what the team truly thinks they’re worth as a person as well as a player, and can’t separate the two. (Whenever a player says “It’s not about the money it’s the principle,” it’s all about the money.)

Both types can be disappointed in how the contract gets done or what the numbers are that get tossed around, but one group is stricken through to the heart and the other shrugs it off as business (Mankins vs. Wilfork). It’s the latter group, that can disdain the process but still embrace the team once the papers are signed, that will have the longer career in the NFL.

Keep the faith!

wilfork did it right

he stood up for himself , he said the right things, he had class and when the pats offered him a contract he worked it out and signed it. from what i gather mankins didnt like the pats offer and didnt even counter he just expects to be paid more then evans. i dont like because the saints paid evans a ludicrous amount for a guard why does that mean the patriots have to? mankins has a right to be upset i guess he has a right to demand a trade but he crossed the line with his comments about kraft and the patriots orginization.
