Mike Reiss brings this up on his blog today, stating that Tim Graham @ ESPN picked the '04 Pats as their best team ever in his review of doing this for each team in the AFC East.
I can't agree more.
I know we Pulpites....are we pulpites? pulpitiers? pulpitarians? I digress...
there was in these parts earlier this year regarding the best Pats team of all time and I believe a large # of people felt the 2007 was the Pats best team ever.
I can understand this argument to a certain point, but here on July 1, with little else to discuss I thought I'd bring my reasoning for 2004 as the best team ever back into the mix and see if anyone would like to offer 2007 as a superior team. I don't feel there is much room to debate, but I'm curious to see if I could be swayed.
In support of 2004 as the best Patriots team ever I offer the following considerations:
1 - They were defending Super Bowl champs, so there were no games off during the season.
2 - They only lost 2 games all season, 2nd best overall record in the NFL.
3 - They won their first 7 games, establishing an NFL record of 21 straight between 03-04.
4 - In the playoffs they held the NFL's #1 offense to 3 points, then scored 41 on the #1 D...in their own house.
5 - They were top 3 in the NFL in total points for O and D.
6 - They repeated as Superbowl Champions, one of only 7 teams to ever do so.
7 - They became only the second team ever to win 3 SB's in 4 years.
So now I invite you, defendants of the 2007 to offer reasoning supporting the equation '07 > '04, because it just doesn't seem possible to me. 2004 for was a great team not only for what they did during that season, but for what what they established in that season for the NFL history books.
