Rumor: Patriots Looking at Ogunleye
With Derrick Burgess contemplating retirement and the Patriots left thin at the outside linebacker position, the team is looking for some veteran help at the position. That help may be in the form of Adewale Ogunleye, the veteran defensive end that has spent the last six seasons in Chicago.
The Patriots are reportedly interested in Oguleye (and even worked him out), but according to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, are currently undecided about bringing in the 32 year old pass rusher.
Personally, I think that Oguleye would be a solid pickup who could rack up the 5-7 sacks the Patriots need at the outside linebacker position. While Ogunleye is a little long in the tooth, he hasn't recorded less than five sacks since 2001, and has prototypical outside linebacker size at 6-4, 260 pounds.
Last season, in 14 games for the Bears, Ogunleye recorded 6.5 sacks and 38 tackles.

Two things
goladymall.com sucks.
And I agree greg, if he comes in for short money, why not give him a ride? See if he rides well. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
I am still very worried about our lack of pass rush. Barring Cunningham emerging, I dont think we have addresses that issue at all.
Only problem is who you cut to make the roster spot
Otherwise, if he’s on short-money, if he sucks and you cut him, no big loss. Low risk, apart from the possibility of losing the guy you cut to make room for Ogunleye.

True, but he isn't even necessarily guaranteed a roster spot
And with the emerging special team play from the likes of Patrick Chung, you might not need a guy like Marques Murrell or Pierre Woods for their special teams value.

Ogunleye could provide the pass rush that would help out the entire defense.
I hope it’s worth the risk should Kraft and the FO decide to sign him. The risk is beating out one of the rookies for a spot on the final roster before the season…

I think they should go for it and sign him
being that Burgess was a lock for a spot anyway, so Ogunleye would simply take his roster spot and not really affect the rookies that will or won’t make the team.
You might be onto something here
My only real issue with kicking Ogunleye’s tyres would be if it was at the expense of a promising young player; if Burgess is indeed retiring and Ogunleye an outright replacement veteran-for-veteran, then I’d have no issues at all with signing him.

I agree...
But if Burgess doesn’t retire it creates something like depth at the position. Also, there’s always the “you’re cut but you’re on speed dial” idea with Crable.
Agreed.
Cunningham, McKenzie, Mayo, Guyton, and Spikes should represent the LB core for the future. If the PATS brought in Ogunleye or Aaron Schobel, I’d be more apt to have that guy challenge TBC for his position. Perhaps not immediately, but definitely once Cunningham showed he was ready to start.

Indeed
Tyres with a ‘y’; it’s the English/Australian/NZ spelling.

Well, He is needed here
Woods plays because he knows the Defense not because he’s a good player & Crable can’t seem stay healthy & if he doesn’t show some glimpse in preseason he’s likely gone. We need a mentor to the younger LBs & immediate contributor to the Defense. & i think Addy fills both those roles. If we sign him, Burgess HAS to come back. I think he just doesn’t want to go through the two-a-days to be honest.
ummmm crable is already gone
got cut before camp even started. and BB doesnt keep players just because they “know the defense” woods is a good player and earns his spot every year.
I say give him a shot.
Judging how thin we are at OLB, getting Ogunleye would make sense.
I'm also a Raider Fan dammit!!! RAIDER NATION!!!!
Down with Big Brother!
Ogunleye for Burgess
would be my vote. In fact, I’d encourage Burgess to retire. Considering the two players, Burgess is contemplating retirement. Who needs that in the locker room. Ogunleye, on the other hand, might arrive with a small chip on his shoulder to show the Bears that he can still play. THAT extra motivation can be very nice to have in BB’s grasp, and Ogunleye could tip the scales even further our way when the PATS play the Bears.
and if he just doesn't have it, you aren't exactly worse off than you are without him.
Ogunleye is definitely worth a shot, from where I’m looking.
Also everyone should keep in mind
that Aaron Schobel is an interesting scenario unfolding in Buffalo. He has been a nemesis for Brady, and he had 10 sacks last season. He’s 32. It would require a deal since the Bills still own his rights, but he has an impressive resume. Unfortunately, he’s a DE: not an OLB. Of course, the PATS could sit and watch to see if the Bills release him. However, the Colts will most likely grab him since they are rumored to be looking like the PATS at a pass rusher.
The Bills trouble will help us
I’ve been hoping that the bills would release Aaron and it looks like that will happen. However he was talking about retirement, I don’t know if this was a threat to the bills front office but I would imagine being on a winning team would add incentive for him to attempt the shift to OLB

I think the Colts might also be looking
with their internal contract issues. I may be wrong. I’d prefer to wait and see if the Bills release Aaron. I’d hate to give something to the Bills to get him. But, that wait and see approach could open the door for the Colts – or someone else.
In the end, we are all hoping that Cunningham becomes the starter. One of these two guys could challenge TBC. I’m OK with that. I also like the idea that Aaron might play a little harder against the Bills even though their separation appears amiable. In the end, there’s always some lingering issue to drive their motivation.
if we can get schobel or ogunele
on a cap friendly deal then fine. but i am all for seeing what cunningham can do for us sooner rather then later. if the year 2 players from last year like chung butler brace edelman and vollmer make the leap that they have been talking about. i want this years class to get as much playing time as possible this year so in turn next year this team that could suprise this year is really going to explode in 2011. think about it we will have a lot of players in year 3 getting beter and better then we will have the 2010 class going into year 2 with some exp in there pocket and added into 4 picks in first 2 rounds of 11 draft this team is ready to start a new dynasty real real soon. so in short i hope cunningham gets the nod at the olb spot.
I agree that Cunningham looks promising
and it would be great to see him become a starter as soon as possible. I think he would have been behind Burgess and TBC, to begin the season, while he learned the system.
I would be happy to see either Schobel or Ogunleye replace Burgess and thereby allow Cunningham a slower development period.
My ideal would be Schobel [who I seriously believe is the equivalent to Vrabel] and TBC be the starters at the outset. Then, not too long into the season, Cunningham replaces TBC as the starter.
When you compare Schobel [10 sacks] to TBC [10 sacks] I think you have to place Schobel well above TBC as a player.
Part of why Schobel was considering retirement...
was that the Bills have introduced the 3-4 and projected Schobel as an outside linebacker for the first time in his career, and he wasn’t too interested in having to learn a new position at this stage of his career. Given he’d be asked to do much the same in NE, I’m not sure that’s on the cards.
Token southern hemisphere guy - 14,688km from Foxboro. That's 9128 miles, for you heathens.
I would hope Schobel
would jump at the opportunity to play any position for the PATS knowing he has a shot at a Super Bowl ring. I can easily see his lack of incentive to re-invent himself at this late juncture in his career when he knows full well that the BILLS are not contenders.
I’d take Schobel over the other options, including Burgess, but I would only do so if the BILLS released him.
I do hope Cunningham becomes a starter, but not until he has had adequate time to learn the system inside and out. TBC and someone else can start for a while.
