Asante tries to prove he can tackle....

Here is a video of the hit (turn up the volume), and after the jump: the picture evidence.

Do you think this was a clean hit?
Yes, but Samuels is still a dork.

No, it was clearly helmet to helmet contact.

Doesn't matter, it's the only tackle Asante will make all year.

The things I notice are:

The very loud plastic to plastic hit in the video.

McCluster’s head is the first thing to move (both turned, and jerked back).

Samuels head is (more) blurry coming in because he is coming fast. The momentum of his head looks like it transfers pretty readily to McCluster’s head which is moving pretty fast in the third frame.

Samuel’s hands are coming in low which couldn’t really account for the head movement.

Monster hit

inconclusive as far as helmet-to-helmet. Obviously this tackling-thing is something new for him judging by the amount of time spent celebrating it

Keep the faith!

Cassel's lucky he wasn't sacked 7 times

before he got rid of the ball set McCluster up for a season ending injury.

My kingdom for a spellchecker. Or Devin Harris. Hopefully both.
For all the crap we give Wil Wheaton, he can still tackle better than Asante Samuel...
Manning drops back to pass, Comedic.Sans and Wilfork come flying in and SACK him for a loss of twelve on 3rd and goal!

How about a who cares category...

The guy should have made the game sealing interception in the Superbowl in ‘07 which would have gotten us the perfect season. I don’t ever want to see this guy again especially on this blog. No offense to your post SMP.

by Mike-Dub on Aug 29, 2010 9:29 PM EDT reply actions

wilhite can make that tackle

mccluster couldn’t even see asante in the first place, so there was

1) no way he would have had the reaction time

2) Asante was going in one direction, so if mccluster saw him coming, he would only have to step to the side, and asante yet again will whiff on another tackle

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

Unfortunately,

He’s still better than anyone on our roster.

As Mr. Sloan always says, there is no "I" in team, but there is an "I" in pie. And there's an "I" in meat pie. Anagram of meat is team... I don't know what he's talking about. --Shaun of the Dead

by JohnHannahRules on Aug 29, 2010 10:01 PM EDT reply actions

Don't rate Bodden?

Bodden had the league-best stats at shutting down receivers after the catch, and was a top-5 in restricting total yardage when he was thrown at. Samuel was bottom 20% in both.

Good luck for the season

A lot of Pats fans are looking at the Chiefs (and Broncos) as a Pats-jr team, with all the ex-Patriots personnel and staff around the organisation. Come back any time.

I didn't realize Weis and Crennel were both on that team until recently.

I forgot/didn’t pay attention to where they each went. Very interesting scenario.

My Grandmother could have made that tackle!

Of course she’s 6’2" 250…
(anyone?)

It’s not saying much at the NFL level to nail a guy in the flat who hasn’t turned up field yet.
It is saying something to celebrate that like you are the best thing since sliced bread.

by JonnyNYC on Aug 30, 2010 8:58 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

There are only two reasons that's a big hit

1) Cassel made it obvious where he was going to throw the ball and gift wrapped his receiver for a big hit. The only way it wasn’t going to be a hard tackle was if Samuel hit him before the ball got there.

2) McCluster is about 4’6" and 60 pounds. If Samuel tries to tackle an average sized running back like that, he’s going to break his own neck.

by RSNexile on Aug 30, 2010 10:35 AM EDT reply actions   2 recs

Asante has always been able to make this kind of tackle, where the receiver is basically blindsided before he has a chance to accelerate. He just gets in trouble whenever receivers are, y’know, actually moving.

Dang, that hit was vicious

Well, after the whole Jason Peters debacle, there is only one team I dislike like more than the Eagles, and suprise surprise, it isnt the Patriots!!!!!!!(yer 3rd, lol) I hope both our teams aweep them cocky, overhyped Jets this year ( and I hope we beat yous guys at least once too, lol) I remember when Samuel was a UFA, and the Eagles snatched him up, I was heated. But that anger was soon replaced when we let Jabari Greer walk for less than what it cost to retain McGee. Anyway, good luck his year, and dont sleep on us, trust me, getting rid of Jauron, The Tampa2 and actually hiring an OC couldnt possibly make the Bills any worse.

by BuffaloChip on Aug 30, 2010 8:42 PM EDT reply actions

I never sleep on the Bills

You guys have played spoiler way too many times. I hope you final have all of the pieces (other than getting rid of Wilson) to turn the team around. I love it when the division is tough. Sharpens everyone up for the big game.

Good luck to you this season.

He’s a breath of fresh air compared to flacid Jauron. I’d still rather see them run a hybrid 4-3 that switches to a 3-4, (you think YOU have LB issues…..) but alas, no more T2 makes me happy. I was on the fence about Gailey calling out those punks at trainning camp but if it brings the team together, so be it. I’m most pleased with Gailey’s ability to make adjustments as the game goes on, something that Jauron never did, or at least never did well. We will live to regret pissing Bobby April off so bad he refused his re-hire. Now if Gailey can get Beiber, err i mean Trent to cut his hair……

And SlotMachine, I harbor no ill will toward Wilson, he may be old, decrepit and funny lookng but the NFL as we know it wouldnt be the same if I wasnt for Ralph. And thats the darned truth.

by BuffaloChip on Aug 30, 2010 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

i have a great deal of respect for Ralph Wilson and also Al Davis.

They were huge in getting the upstart AFL going. Those of us with AFL teams owe them a huge debt of gratitude.

Having said that, both of those guys would be better off handing over operations to younger men. Their best days are behind them.
