Who's Got the Edge? Jets Vs. Patriots
Every week here at Pats Pulpit, we'll break down the Patriots' opponent and look at how the Patriots match up with them in each facet of the game. This week, the Patriots will travel to New Meadowlands Stadium to take on the New York Jets at 4:15 PM on Sunday. A look at how I see things unfolding on Sunday:

Slight Edge: Patriots |
Patriots Pass Offense Vs. Jets Pass Defense |
While the Jets do have Darrelle Revis who should give Randy Moss fits, the Patriots simply have too many weapons and can do too many things through the pass. If Moss is covered, the Patriots have two slot receivers in Welker and Edelman, a big play threat in Tate, and versatility with their tight ends (who can outmatch the Jets linebackers). Plus, Jets cornerbacks Kyle Wilson and Antonio Cromartie weren’t too impressive in the opener against the Ravens. |
|
The Jets’ rush defense could be the best the NFL has to offer. They absolutely shut down a potent Ravens’ rushing attack, holding them under two yards per carry. The Patriots likely won’t be dominating the Jets on the ground, despite the solid opening day performance from Fred Taylor and the Patriots rushing attack. |

Mark Sanchez has looked awful as of late (preseason and last week), and hasn’t really shown much since being the fifth overall pick last year. While the Patriots have a young and relatively inexperienced secondary, I don’t expect the Jets passing attack to give them fits, as the group held up well against the Bengals’ strong passing attack. The x-factor in the passing game for the Jets is tight end Dustin Keller, who is big, athletic, and has had success against the Patriots before. |
|
2nd year back Shonn Greene wasn’t much of a factor in the Jets’ Monday Night loss to the Ravens, but could be an x-factor this week. LaDainian Tomlinson has looked surprisingly good. And while the Jets also have a good run blocking line, the Patriots held a 1,200 yard back in Cedric Benson to just 43 yards on 15 carries last week. Slight edge to the Jets just because the Patriots’ rush defense is still relatively unproven. |

Special Teams |
The Patriots started the season off on a real high note on special teams last week, with great kick coverage and even had a kick return touchdown. When comparing special teams skills players (P, K, LS), it seems that the Patriots hold an even more significant edge. |

Coaching |
This one is going to be pretty easy to answer each week. However, there’s no question that the coaching matchup will be especially intriguing this week. You’ve got the tight-lipped, let your play do the talking coach in Bill Belichick vs. the attention-hungry, flamboyant, uber-aggressive (defensively) style coach in Rex Ryan. Did I mention that Ryan’s career record is 9-8 in the regular season? |

agree on everything
but i think the Pats pass defense have a high edge against the Jets passing offense. the only weapon i fear is Dustin Keller. He has burned the Pats in 2008 (2nd game) and in 2009 (1st game).
I dont fear Edwards…he’s too busy grooming his beard.
Thankfully S Holmes isn’t playing.

Agreed on Keller
The only time I fear Sanchez is on the play action. And the only reason I fear the play action is because of Dustin Keller. I think we’ll see a lot of Guyton on Keller.

i'm hoping Guyton will be physical @ the LOS...can't give him a free release...hopefully its Chung covering him on run downs

Pats 24-9
I think they’ll go yet another week without finding the endzone.

You mean ...
Pats 3 X (2 to power of 3) Jets 3 to power of 2
just imagine if the
Jets only score either PI or e
i generally agree although
Patriots Pass Offense Vs. Jets Pass Defense
this will really be the defining thing that will tell us how far the patriots go this season against other top defenses so i will be neutral here
I can't offer an analysis, so...
I’ll just go on record to say I want the Patriots to give the Jets a proper thumping. 56 – 6.

If it looks like it's going to get that out of hand, I would hope Hoodie would keep going for the jugular
and try to set a new single-game record for points scored.
He was just a tad too merciful in ’07.

People always play the running up the score card...
…and they did kinda do that a lot in 2007. But I also remember seeing backup fullback runs up the middle in the 4th quarter sometimes.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't
What’s more insulting – the opposition playing at their best, the whole game, and putting 50 points on you, or the opposition playing their best for a quarter or a half, and then being so confident that they put on their third string team and still beat you?
At least if you get thrashed by their top team you can say “well, Tom Brady and Randy smoked us, but they’re setting records as the best QB-WR combination in a season, ever”. Seems a little more palatable than “well, they’re beating us up so badly they got bored and brought in their slow cousin Jimmy to play for a while at QB”.

Why is running up the score in college seen as ok, even encouraged, but frowned upon in the pros?
Seems like it should be the opposite because the college schedule sets some teams up for it, NFL factory schools vs low level Div 1 or even the FBS schools. Thing is though, those are just kids playing their hearts out for free and in the pros the difference between the best and worst teams isn’t all that large. And that is besides the fact that even the worst players are very highly paid compared to the “real” world. I feel like if your (pro)team can do it, drop a hundred on the other team. They get paid to stop you and if they can’t get it done, oh well. It just seems backwards to me, that’s all

The more you score in college, the higher your rank...
…and the better chance of a bowl game. NFL doesn’t have that.

I get that
It still just doesn’t seem right, basically rubbing amateur athletes’ noses in it, just because you can, but it’s bad form to do it to a pro. I want the Pats to hang 70 on the Jets…then we can finally stop hearing about them and focus on teams that actually have a chance to knock us off.

Revis hype against Moss is over played ...
As usual, the pundits latch onto some story and run it to death.
If you look at the picks Revis had on Moss, it is fairly obvious that both throws were the cause. INT one on the long throw down the sidelines had a safety right there as well. That was a forced throw to Moss. Clearly, Brady needs to lay off Moss when he has tight double coverage.
The second INT was an under throw by Brady. Brady had a defender in his face as he was releasing the ball. Clearly another predictable pass play where the D rushed with fury.
I keep saying that no DB can stop Moss [or any #1 WR] by himself. IF O’Brien mixes it up with a range of play calls, uses the TE’s, uses slot screens, slants, and running plays, Moss will have single coverage by Revis, Brady will have time and space to set his feet, and Moss will be open. Period.
This is not complicated. Revis is not going to shut down Moss. O’Brien will be the one to shut down Moss if he repeats his pathetic play calling efforts from last season. O’Brien’s predictable play calling will create double teams on Moss, and it will create an all-out, JET’s pass rush on Brady.
If we see a nice mix of play calls, we will be discussing how amazing Moss was, and how he owned Revis. Neither statement being true. Revis needs his other 10 guys to “own” anyone. Moss needs O’Brien to diversify his play calling to “own” any DB.
Revis is very good. Ty Law was very good. They can stay close to the receiver. However, close is not good enough with the elite QB’s in the NFL if said QB has time to set his feet and see the passing lane.
Look at last week w/ McCourty and Ocho. Palmer threaded the needle several times because Palmer had time to set his feet and see the passing lane. Simple result for an elite QB like Palmer: or Manning or Brady. But, if Palmer is rushed, forced to throw off the back foot, or his vision is impaired by a defender, McCourty makes the INT.
Let the defense know it’s a pass play, and most of the time the QB will be pressured on the release.
guess Revis will be on Wes Yac Train all day

The JOKE!!!!! is O'Brien as an offensive coordinator.
His slow learning curve, and likely inability to ever become legitimate, will be the PAT’s achilles heel … O’Brien wil derail a superb offense with poor play calling.
2 and 2 … he calls two pass plays. Enough said.
And, start of the 4th quarter ....
1 pass to Gronkowski
0 passes to Crumpler
2nd and 3 to end the 3rd qtr, he calls, what else!, another pass play.
How can the PATS build a team with amazing draft picks, have BB as the coach, Kraft as the owner, and settle for someone as inept as O’Brien to be the O-coordinator ???!!!
Can we stop the run?
If we can man up and take their best shot, which they will give us(with 2 fullbacks which the Bengals didn’t have), then we will win. Very simple.
I do think the jets will play better, ru th eball ok, and een slow us down on O, because they do have a good D, but I gotta pick the Pats. 24-13
The key to stopping the Jets Rush O
…will be the Pats Pass O. If we can jump out to a quick lead and force them to pass, it will make our day A LOT easier.
O'Brien must be dismissed and replaced. Let BB call the plays.
It is a farse, and it is inconceivable that the PATRIOTS, one of pro sports elite organizations, would settle for an offensive coordinator who is unqualified to handle to handle the job.
Unless O’Brien is removed from his position as the offenisve coordinator, we are wasting our time discussing this team, their draft picks [present and future], and any other aspect of the season moving forward.
He simply has no clue how to maximize the talent at his disposal. His inability to adjust to ongoing game situations is obvious. And, it is the reason the PATS cannot, and will not, succeed with him as the offensive coordinator.
