With this weekends tough loss to the Jets everyone is now talking about how the Pats are no longer a second half team, and actually have been getting out played and out coached in the second half of games. While this is all true I would like to look at one area I think would help this problem get solved first and foremost. The running back position.
What's the number one thing you want to do when you are up on a team in the second half and especially the fourth quarter? If you know anything about football you probably said " run the football!" That's what this team is missing in the second half of games most. You need to be able to control the clock with the running game and really wear out a defense. Remember clock killin Corey Dillon? By the time he was with us he wasn't racking up 200 yard games or anything, but in the 4th quarter up by a TD or 2 you could just give it to Dillon and get 5,6,7, yard chunks and watch that clock tick away.
The other thing is the wear it puts on the opposing defense. When you run the ball you are attacking a defense. The line is going out and hitting them as opposed to pass protection where they laying back and absorbing most of the punishment. Running the football is just a lot harder on the defense physically. It might be to late to find someone now, but hopefully the next draft we either trade for a feature back or draft one with our picks. Mark Ingram anyone?
The short of it is this team would be much improved in the second half if we had a guy in the backfield who could just line up and run it down hill into the teeth of the defense and take control of the clock. Maybe Fred Taylor is that guy but they stopped going to him in the second half and went to Ben Jarvus who just isn't going to scare anyone at 2.7 YPC. Lets get someone back there who can break off a 20 yard run once in a while, wear out a defense, control the clock and actually make a defense bite on play action passes. Unfortunatley, short of a trade it may be to late for that.
