The Patriots acquired safety Jarrad Page from the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a conditional draft choice, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reports, citing a league source.

The 25-year-old Page, who was a restricted free agent, signed his contract Friday. At 6-foot-0, 225 pounds, he is a bigger safety who could play a Brandon McGowan-type role in the box.

Who do you think we should trade, or has better trade value? Sanders or McGowan?

McGowan wasn’t very spectacular this pre-season, but I haven’t seen sanders do much either.

We obviously need someone to fill in the TE coverage, Safety/MLB type safety. So that may mean that sanders is the odd man in this situation. However, we could trade mcgowan for another guy like that, and keep sanders solely for coverage(like a 3rd cover safety. Chung is not as good in coverage as sanders at the moment, and putting sanders in for coverage downs would be ideal).

So is it still JUST sanders, or can McGowan be a possibility instead?

you thought that they would have kept him

by prioris on Sep 4, 2010 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep. He was excellent on special teams.

Him, Arrington, McCourty. All are solid on special teams coverage. Now that one of them is gone, I don’t know how goo they will be compared with him on special teams coverage.

Slater/Chung replaced Aiken's roles in training camp

Chung as upback, and Slater as captain/leader. Slater must be uninjured.

I really liked him on special teams. But hopefully chung and slater step up as well.

Especially considering the McGowan injury

You’d think they’d keep Sergio Brown rather then make a trade for a new guy

Hey Asante is no Cro-mo.
Actually there was a great ‘Cro-moment’ today Rice vs. Texas. Kickoff return, one of the Rice chasers sort of looked at the returner and thought “hey I might get hurt here” and didn’t whiff – just didn’t even attempt the tackle.

He wouldn’t want to have Moss catch some TD’s on his behalf

by demadnick on Sep 4, 2010 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions

OR

don’t come back WK 2, let moss catch a few TDs, just so he can try and get leverage. Which would be likely if that happens.

I would say that’s exactly what Revis is thinking. He knows his leverage skyrockets (great mixed metaphor there) if the Pats hose the Jets secondary. And to be honest, that’s likely. If Kyle Wilson looks like a rookie, or Cro-mo misses a couple tackles, Revis can just about write his own cheque.

by quadruple option on Sep 4, 2010 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Revis's uncle was an NFL player that held out

He was after a contract worth 5+ million, his team offered him 4. He held out for a year, and the Panthers offered him a $7M per year deal even after a year out of football.

Revis has to be aware playing hardball sometimes works.

Perfect season: Revis holds out, Jets start 0-8 or something, Revis comes in gets a contract so big it blots out the sun, Revis is lights out awesome for those 8 games, Jets JUST fail to make the playoffs (let’s say Rex’s little toyboy John Conner misses a key block and LT gets stuffed on 4th and 1), but because they’ve crippled their entire wage structure with Revis, they have to get rid of all their quality from 2011 onwards. Pace moves to New England, as does Kris Jenkins. Perfect. But Revis is still awesome.

ON FLIP SIDE

Matthew Slater

Aiken was edged out by Matthew Slater in a battle of special teamers. That’s a surprise, given that Slater missed most of the preseason because of injury.

I can’t wait to see what the Pats defense on 3rd and long is going to look like.
I have a feeling we’re going to see some exotic looks especially with guys like Guyton and Fletcher (converted College DE) in there. And Spikes as well.
With only 4 OLB, if someone gets dinged up, who are we going to see doing it on early downs? Fletcher? Guyton?

OL Nick Kaczur was not placed on Injured Reserve

, meaning the back surgery may have helped

If they don’t get more reinforcements, they will need him back

by prioris on Sep 4, 2010 8:11 PM EDT reply actions

What we can deduce thus far:

Chung + Slater > Aiken – Chung took Aiken’s upback role in camp, and Slater takes Aiken’s coverage and ST leadership.

McKenzie seems to have squeezed out Alexander.

Ninkovich and Marques Murrell squeeze Pierre Woods out of the frame as special teamers/ depth linebackers.

Cunningham, Ninkovich, Murrell all beat out Derrick Burgess as pure outside linebackers.

Wendell beat out Ohrnberger and Larsen as inside O-linemen depth.

Welch is out, suggesting they like LeVoir and that perhaps Kaczur is coming back at some point.

by prioris on Sep 4, 2010 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Chung took over the playing roles

Slater must be 100% or close enough to now. He also provides depth at D-back, which is something to take into account considering Bodden and now McGowan are on IR.

cunningham

how likely is it that he plays this year?

Projected starting LB lineup:

MLB: Mayo, Spikes
OLBs: Murrel, Banta-Cain

If the think Cunningham is okay to play, do you think they should throw him in the starting role right away? Even with no pre-season performance? Also, would it be worth the risk of him getting injured again?

Apparently Cunningham should be ready for next week

I reckon it might be Ninkovich/Banta-Cain – Nink got the most pressure on QBs during the preseason, and did particularly well in the last game – 3 tackles for loss, a sack, and a few QB pressures.

I remember that I liked Nink last year in pre-season as well. Then he got inured(i think).

I would say Ninkonvich>Murrel.

Probably not starting right away

But he’ll get significant time for the first few games I’m guessing so that they can get a good look at him. If he shows promise that time could increase
