Jay Richardson - Must sign!

If Ty Warren was the run-stuffing DE that is lost for the year,

then why wouldn't the Patriots sign Richardson to a 2-year deal?

This would allow next year's draft to focus on RB and LT in the 1st round

and OLB and WR in the 2nd round.

Richardson would not be expected to post big sack numbers, but

he has performed fairly well as a classic 3-4 DE run stuffer.

My thoughts on Richardson

He’s got a nice height – 6’6" – but he’s a bit light to be a 2-gap 3-4 DE for the Pats at only 280lbs. The ideal Pats 3-4 DE is 300lbs+; Ty Warren is 300lb, Richard Seymour is 310lb, and Gerard Warren is 330lbs. Even Ron Brace, who seems to be the backup LE at the moment, is a good 330lbs.

Richardson also comes from the Raiders’ 1-gap 4-3 defensive scheme (like Gerard Warren), and would thus be expected to have to learn the 3-4 defence from scratch. It’s possible that he picks it up reasonably well – like G. Warren did – but it’s also possible that he would fail completely to learn it – like Damione Lewis.

In other words, it’d be a pretty risky pickup – you’d be getting a guy who may or may not be able to learn the Pats defence from scratch, and even if you did, he’s not the ideal size to play it.
