I'm saying it now, this kid will be a solid starter in 12 mths
I know in the preseason he was getting pushed back by some linemen but he won’t be back from the knee before next year which I think was why he landed on the PS. Welker’s done great, but he admits he isn’t there yet, and theres one thing making cuts, and another going sumo style against a 300 + lb lineman.
That’s why I think he’s more suited to the outside. He’s fast and has a great motor, reminds me of Dumerville.
In the words of the wise prophet Seau, there are people who want (& make excuses for not succeeding) and then there are people who need.
If there’s one thing we know, T Mac is most definitely the latter.
i think
it is simply bcause they are very deep in talent at ILB. Fletcher and McKenzie lack Spikes instinct. Once they develop enough experience, they will be very reliable solid players. I think BB thought Fletcher was jut more ahead on the learning scale. Plus McKenzie would rarely dress for the game.
since there will be logjam at ILB
I can see them cutting Guyton next year and bringing in McKenzie.
Guyton would at least hold the special teams roster spot
He’s a good special teamer, and a guy that big and that quick in an LB’s body is rare.

They are carrying 5 LBs at the moment
All I’m saying is that Guyton might take over the role of the new guy, whose name evades me – the 6’ LB special teamer.

Although if he could be an effective OLB, that could change
I have to think last year was a career year for TBC and he’d be better as a situational player. We don’t know anything about Cunningham yet, and the rest of the OLB corps doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. If McKenzie could be effective there in a way Guyton isn’t — he doesn’t set the edge well at all — he could play there.
Or maybe Crable will finally amount to something other than a smudge on the injured list.
it sucks that Cunningham did not see the field yet cause he looks great on tape. I just hope he can make an impact this year.
I'd be happy with something comparable to what Burgess did last year
That’s perfectly reasonable for a rookie. By next year, though, we need him to be capable of double digit sacks. And we need someone else to help him — and I don’t mean TBC.
It is just as good that he becomes a solid 3 down player. It is not necessary that he be All Pro Bowl OLB.
It is better that the team as a whole increase their sack and qb pressure total. Don’t put onus on Cunningham.
We don't have any pass rush if no one steps up
TBC had a career year last year, and there’s no reason to believe he’ll ever be able to do that again. Crable hasn’t shown anything to get excited about, and we don’t have anyone else who is going to get to the QB with any degree of regularity.
Yes, it would be great for Cunningham just to be a solid three-down player. But absent a significant improvement from someone else or a radical change if our draft fortunes, he needs to be able to put up double digit sacks by 2011 because no one else on the roster is going to get even half that.
as someone pointed out before …
the correlation between the patriots superbowl years and sacks was not about some player piling up an enormous number of sacks but how many players (7 or 8) got 3+ sacks a game (with high of 5 to 7 for a player)
Besidea immaturity in some places which may burn them early on,they have enough talent at all position on defense (although OLB is still open) to be one of the best defensive teams.
i think the patriots just have to be able to set the edges and they should be set to go on defense.
As plenty of people have pointed out before, those teams had plenty of guys who were capable of 3-5 sacks
We have TBC and…?
Yeah, that’s about it. We hope Cunningham can do it, but that would give us two, not seven or eight.
Ultimately, though, it doesn’t matter if you have 7-8 guys getting 3+ sacks for a team total in the high 30s or just two guys getting 15 each with a team total in the high 30s — it’s the total production that matters. The Super Bowl teams were Super Bowl teams because the totality of their production made them so. On this team, the production just isn’t there on the pass rush, and it won’t be for quite some time unless someone starts putting up big numbers consistently.
Ninkovich might get a half-dozen
He’ll never be an all-round OLB (hell, I’m not sure you can call TBC one either), but he gets on a decent enough pass-rush and pressure around the outside. He came on pretty strong in that Colts game last year, and he’s looked competitive against first- and second-stringers in the preseason, notching QB hits and a sack or two. It might be asking a bit much, but extrapolate that over a season, and he might get a surprising stat-line out of it.

I'll believe it when I see it
But even if he does, that’s two guys. We need six or seven. So any way you want to slice it, it’s still an incredibly weak pass rush.
True dat
I do like the potential for an inside pass-rush via Spikes. Spikes is savvy enough to shoot gaps and big enough to shuck Guards, so he can generate some of his own rush… and in the meantime, if the Guards and/or Center are focusing on Spikes, that might allow Mayo to slip through a gap with his extra pace and get to the QB. Pencil in a few sacks each from those two?

Thanks Ninja
i do have to say that was some amazing investigative reporting on my end to dig this story up. Seriously, i am very happy with this, really hope we get a chance to see him develop into a solid LB.
Time to talk about the Bengals!
The roster won’t finalize for one week but i think Kaczur gets IR’ed and Oijinka officially comes on board. Mankins can remain a possible option for patriots during season if needed.
It's never really finalised
Guys will get bounced in and out of the practice squad and the lower half-dozen roster spots as injuries occur and other teams reshuffle rosters. In other words, the last few guys on the roster and the practice squad are by no means guaranteed jobs for the season, now. They’ll have to earn and retain those spots from all comers.

PS player
If a guy like McKenzie were called up to dress for a PATS game and he actually played in the game, does that mean he must now stay on the roster [and no longer be eligible to return to the PS]?
My understanding is...
…is that you ca call a guy up from the Practice Squad, but he has to remain on the active roster for a 3 week minimum.
