To those asking where Texans A+M LB Von Miller will go in the NFL draft, the early signs are, Top 5 pick.
Adam Schefter. Whoever gets Miller will be very disappointed. He's 237 pounds (yeah), can't set the edge and gets eaten by tackles and large tight ends. He's showing an ability to drop into coverage at the Senior Bowl, but his inadequacies are coming to light. Still, it only takes one team to fall in love.

Dude
people can gain weight. and he is great for any 1 gap 3-4 team. his burst is unbelievable. And when I watched his bowl game, I saw him get run at 7 times, 3 were for losses from his part.
I would rather have 3 Super Bowls in my career, passing records, a hot wife, 500 million dollars and get to play football every day then be a 300lb man with foot fetish videos. Apparently, most Jets fans would disagree.

and so far
from the practises, he has shown the capability to do all three phases against the premier tackles of this draft.

description of sherrod v miller in practise
In round one with Miller standing up from a two-point stance, he simply used his great first step and ability to drop his pad level to flatten out around the edge to accelerate right past Sherrod toward the corner.
In round two, Sherrod took the jab, was quicker to reach the corner and did a nice job maintaining his balance and extending his arms into Miller. Miller countered with an inside spin, but Sherrod cleanly redirected — the reason why we think he’s the best OT in the nation — and calmly anchored through the play.

oh and Mayock disagrees with you

I take it you like Miller?
He is still too small to be in our 3-4 defense at OLB. He is not a better option for the Patriots over the other named OLB prospects such as Kerrigan, Beal, Ayers, Quinn and the like. Good football player, but not for this team.

no I don't like miller for our D

As I've said
people are looking through the glasses of the pats defense, which miller doesn’t fit, but he is same height weight of james harrison (i think 5 lbs lighter) and in a one gap he has the burst required, which is not required in our 2 gap.

Watch playbook on NFL network
/also, the guy has gotten numerous offers from NFL teams to do their scouting, so no, he doesn’t suck.
Also go to MTD, the real draft site, and put up a poll to see who is better, Kiper or Mayock. Mayock isn’t perfect, but Kiper sux balls. He thinks we’ll take ingram at 17.

LMAO
Look i agree about the Kiper comment, and when i see at th bottom of the screen Mayocks ticker about top 5 positions in each category, i usually agree with them. But just not about Miller. I’m sure he’s a great player. And maybe he can be a Harrison or Dumervil prototype. But i am still not sold on him.

I'm not completely sold
but I can also point out flaws in any player in this draft that make them look like a fifth rounder. And “the hair” is a tool, he was also the biggest jimmy clausen enthusiast in the entire world, and is known to have gotten benefits for putting guys higher on his big board.

He can gain weight...
…but how will that affect his speed and burst? It certainly won’t help.
He benefited from playing an isolation role in college- he was allowed to do whatever. He was just let loose and they hoped for the best (and yeah, it usually worked). However, he won’t be doing that in the NFL. He’ll be asked to play a certain role.
During Senior Week, he’s gone up against the top tackles and the general consensus is that he’s improved in coverage, yet gets taken out of plays by tight end blockers and tackles. He gets pushed out of running lanes.

Dude, I'm sorry if I trust Mayock over you.
He doesn’t fit our system, but in a place like arizona or steelers, he could really be awesome. Watch the NFL coverage of the Senior Bowl. Mayock just asked Gailey about Miller, and Gailey looked at Mayock when he asked if he could play the run. I’m sorry, but I think you are generalizing just because he is small. I watched him play, and he was great in all aspects. I saw him drop, and he didn’t get beaten. In a one gap system, he is more likely than not going to be a beast.

Oh sure.
He may be fine in the 4-3 and it’s no coincidence that 4/5 of the bottom 5 teams run the 4-3. Mayock said that Miller would need to gain some weight to play in the 3-4 as an OLB or the 4-3 DE and showed some concern if he could put on that weight with no negative effect. Maybe I should have said that Miller would struggle as a 3-4 OLB, but in general he’s getting pushed around by tackles. He can cut to the inside against Sherrod in one on one drills since there’s no one on the inside, but in an actual game a guard will be standing right there. He’s shown nothing on the football field that he can disengage from a blocker and he’ll get pancaked and run out of plays. This is game film on him. He has a good first step, but that won’t get him anywhere against any blocker once they get their hands on him.

I just watched Mayock say, and I quote
“he can play in any system, and he has shown the ability to play in all phases of the game.” Miller could lose a step and still beat most tackles, and he is already pretty good at run blocking. I have been watching the practises, and he is giving the tackles all they can handle. He reminds me of a OLB version of Freeney (his spin move is very good.) In a one-gap team, he gains 10-15 pounds, he has all the factors to show he can succeed.

As soon as any player on the line gets their hand on Miller, he's out of the play.
That’s just how it is. If he put on 15 pounds, he’d definitely lose some of his explosion and that’s all he really has going for him as a pass rusher. He reaches the quarterback by getting around and under the opposing players. He won’t get free releases in the NFL.
by Richard Hill on Jan 26, 2011 10:19 PM EST up reply actions
he has other moves
that is why he reminds me of freeney. watching him, even if he gets caught, he still gets close to beating the tackles. Gaining the weight takes away any concerns on run (he is already good for his size) and his step is like moss’. Even after 13 years, moss only fell back the step he had on the top guys. Miller has that extra step on almost every player. Also remember James Harrison has the same height weight, so if Miller only gained 10 pounds, but it was 10 pounds of muscle gain, he is very strong, tough, and has the abilities of harrison (though unproven at the next level I know.)

Watch his actual game tape.
Every time he engages with a blocker (guard, tight end, tackle, running back), he gets driven out of a play. That eliminates him from the 4-3 defense, in my opinion. He could be picked up and moved by every single football player. He makes plays when he doesn’t get touched, which means that he could work in a one gap 3-4 as you’ve said. However, he’s a current liability against the run and the weight needed to stop the run could slow him.
It’s also unsurprising that when teams run at Harrison, they gain almost a yard more than if they run at Woodley. It’s the nature of the Steelers’ defense to give up no rushing yards, but Harrison is the “weak” link. Miller will need to gain at least 20 pounds to play 4-3 DE and a minimum of 10 pounds to play 3-4 OLB and be an all-around player.
There are only four 3-4 OLBs that are under 247 lbs in the league, which would signify a 10 pound gain. Two with the Steelers, two with the 49ers (Jarson Worilds, James Harrison, Manny Lawson, Thaddeus Gibson), one starter for each team. One of them was drafted by the Steelers this past season, released, and then picked up by the 49ers (Gibson). Those are the only two systems that would allow Miller to even play, never mind succeed. The difference in the systems?
For the 49ers, Lawson isn’t a primary pass rusher. He focuses on stopping the run and coverage. Miller would have to be a pass rusher because that’s his strength. It will be difficult for him to maintain his level of pass rush if he gains the weight necessary to stop the run. He can learn to drop into coverage, but a pass rush/drop into coverage skill set limits him to being a third down linebacker.
Looking at the Steelers, Harrison is a pass rusher. However, he’s not an elite coverage linebacker or run stopper. That’s fine, though, since he normally has Polamalu stalking the line near him during run plays. Miller could succeed at the Steelers, sure, but he’d still only be a pass rush/cover linebacker and I don’t think that is what teams are looking for in the first round.
The other two players? They sitting on the bench gaining weight.
That’s my concern. Miller can rush the quarterback off a free release (which means he needs to be on a team with extensive blitz packages) and he’s learning how to drop into coverage. The Steelers are really the only team in the league where he can get away with that skill set. Everywhere else he’d need to get up to at least 250 (the four aforementioned players and Joey Porter are the only five outside linebackers under 250 pounds), and he’d need to gain a few pounds even to play for the Steelers behind James Harrison.
Too many question marks. Yes, Miller is one of the top pass rushers in the league, but he needs a free release because of his size. He’s not going to get that from the 4-3 DE spot. Almost no NFL teams can guarantee him that in the 3-4.
by Richard Hill on Jan 27, 2011 9:01 AM EST up reply actions
First, you keep saying he is a liability to run. Watching tape, he ins't one already.
Yes he needs to gain a bit of size for NFL, but he is not a liability. He had about 7 runs at him in his bowl game, he made 2TFL’s and only one (a cutback0 got decent yardage. Arizona runs the same system as the steelers do on D (or very close to it), and arizona is a top 5 pick. Also, if i remember, teams only chip the guys who they think will beat them. If you have to dedicate a TE+OT to block a guy, then he is doing his job well. James Harrison is great because of his pass rushing ability, every great player doesn’t have to be awesome against both. Harrison is twice the pass rusher woodley is. But half the run stopper. People just expect every player to be awesome at everything. As I’ve said before, name any prospect, and I can make them sound like a UDFA. Miller has also shown in the Senior bowl that he has developed the spin move; which makes him that dwight freeney prototype of a guy who has two moves, and you can (unless you are a jake long) only hope that the inside spin doesn’t get your QB sacked.

He is a liability.
He gets pushed out of the way by every blocker. He has a high motor so he continues running even when he’s out of the play, but he rarely ever stops a play at the line. He’s always playing catch-up. His TFLs were after the players were already engaged. One was on a screen where the cornerback was already pulling down the receiver and Miller jumped on the pile and the other was because the linebacker on the OTHER side of the field set the edge and Miller was able to catch up from behind as the running back hit traffic. He’s a great hustler, but he doesn’t make those plays on his own.
And Miller doesn’t really ever get double teamed. Only time is when A&M rush 4 and the offensive line has an extra lineman doing nothing. Yeah, Miller is the best defender, but he’s not double teamed out of fear; just because the lineman isn’t blocking anyone. Tight ends push him out of running plays. Linemen can push him away during passing plays. He can move to the inside against taller tackles and has the versatility on both sides. He’s worth a draft pick. Just not a first rounder. He’s a great college pass rusher, but I’m hesitant to say that will translate into the NFL.
by Richard Hill on Jan 27, 2011 1:52 PM EST up reply actions
if they keep a tight end in to block him
he would beat them with the spin. that is what he has developped and is showing in the pro bowl. they have to respect the outside rush, so when they kick out, he spins in. That is why everyone is drooling, because he just showed that he has more than one move. Go back and watch the sugar bowl, because in the red zone, he had two plays in a row where he got into the backfield within about half a second blowing by joseph barksdale. On other running plays, he stood in, and when they ran at him, he held on on all but one of the plays to force the guy wide. He has the coverage skill, has the same moves (not as polished obviously) as Dwight Freeney and holds his own and hustles harder than anyone in the draft. That is easily worth a first round pick. And if the need is great enough, a top 12 pick.

But he doesn't beat them.
He’s had the spin during the season and it works, yet he still didn’t make the play. He spins free of the block, but he doesn’t move towards his target. I’m watching the whole game and here’s his good points:
2:50 left, 1st quarter: Hits the QB on a line slide as the guard isn’t able to engage in contact. Free release, QB still completes the 3rd down. Great first step.
2:17 left, 2nd quarter: He makes a tackle in the backfield of the running back by the goal line. Free release, no one blocked him. Great speed, but wasn’t accounted for.
14:11 left, 3rd quarter: Faces against the right tackle, makes a move to the outside, the tackle bites and he cuts inside, untouched, and gets to the quarterback. Great move, not sure how many NFL caliber tackles fall for that, but it’s definitely a great play.
9:15 left, 4th quarter: LSU runs to the opposite of Miller, he pursues and when the running back hits traffic, Miller catches up and makes the TFL. Once again, mostly free release. He gets chipped, but no one engages with him.
8:40 left, 4th quarter: Miller is lined up against the RT, RT goes for the cut block, Miller is tripped, but he doesn’t get knocked down and he gets the QB hit. Pass is still completed for the 3rd down conversion.
That’s all his plays. None of his good plays came against Barksdale. He made all of plays while unblocked. If you watch all the snaps (look for #40, don’t get confused with #10), you can see him getting stood up every time he’s blocked by a lineman or tight end. Every single time. He gets run out of his lane when rushing the quarterback, allowing mobile quarterbacks to get away (Tully Banta-Cain syndrome). When he sets the edge, he doesn’t really have an effect. Watch the plays- he gets manhandled by the linemen and never has an opportunity to make a play until the running back is past him and all of his tackles are drag downs from behind. He doesn’t square up the running back ever because he’s never in position.
He does have good coverage potential- he seems to know his zones- but he never made a play in coverage, but that’s to be expected since he doesn’t have much experience. I’m just not seeing what you’re seeing when he’s on the football field. I just see a guy with a great first step, who can’t shed blocks, isn’t anything special at setting the edge and has some potential at dropping into coverage. I’m seeing a 4-3 OLB.

We already have one Tully Banta-Cain
Supposedly a great pass rusher who can’t set the edge? No way we draft the younger, skinnier version.

I like this news
because maybe it will push somebody else down to us that would be a better fit for us. IDK who that would be, but it’s better than nothing because I don’t think we would have drafted Miller anyway.
