Patriots vs. Steelers: Faulk, Mayo, and Vollmer Active

Kevin Faulk will officially be returning to the field for the Patriots today.

The Patriots have announced their inactives for their 4:15 PM game against the Pittsburgh Steelers:

DE Jermaine Cunningham

RB Shane Vereen

QB Ryan Mallett

WR Julian Edelman

OL Donald Thomas

S Josh Barrett

LB Dane Fletcher

The biggest news today is who is active rather than who isn't.  The Patriots have three key players returning from injury: linebacker Jerod Mayo, running back Kevin Faulk, and tackle Sebastian Vollmer.

Vollmer has played just one game this season due to a lingering back injury, and he will likely be thrown back into the line-up as the starting right tackle.  Rookie Nate Solder should see snaps on both the left and right side.

Linebacker Jerod Mayo has missed the last two weeks due to a sprained MCL.  It seems as if the extra week of rest due to the bye has aided him in his return.  It will be interesting to see how the Patriots linebacker rotation works.  Brandon Spikes has been playing at a very high level as of late, and I would expect him to get the start in the mike spot, with Jerod Mayo on the weak-side and Ron Ninkovich playing the strong-side spot.  In that scenario, Gary Guyton would rotate in as the top back-up in all three spots with Dane Fletcher inactive.

The Patriots will also be playing the two players that they activated off of PUP: Kevin Faulk and defensive lineman Brandon Deaderick.  Faulk is replacing Shane Vereen on the active roster, who is a healthy scratch.  I would expect Faulk to see significant snaps as a 3rd down / change of pace back.

Also in the world of noteworthy healthy scratches is defensive end Jermaine Cunningham.  Cunningham has seen his role greatly reduced this season with the Patriots switching to the 4-3.  This is the biggest marker of his struggle to adjust to the new defense.

I hope Price plays

Just because I want a good 3rd WR.

he had 1 nfl game

and 1 preseason game.

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

… in mop-up last year and in preseason this year?

by quadruple option on Oct 30, 2011 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess.

I know that Price has talent, but he’ll likely get the same amount of snaps as ocho. After all, I know for a fact that Brady would have Branch, Welker, Herndo, and Gronk over everybody else. Maybe faulk will be the 5th guy too.

Mop-Up?

He still looked good with the limited opportunities he’s gotten so give him more.

those opportunities are not enough.

1 NFL game (that was a mop up game in week 17 last year) and 1 presason game is not enough to get anything.

How about your 3rd WR pos.

is producing little to nothing for you and you are going to have to develop him anyway, and you have nothing to lose giving him snaps as the 3rd WR.

So why bother putting price in if he will hardly have time to contribute?

Ocho at least has NFL experience, and so far has not been injury prone.

Price will get his time, but its too early to put faith in him. I have a hard time believing a 3rd WR spot is any valuable with Brady rather having 5 guys ahead of the 3rd WR.

You should put faith in him

because you aren’t getting anything anyways out of that position. So Price might be able to actually add something Ocho obviously isn’t. If Price can show he can beat man to man and burn defenses then his snaps will increase and his contribution able because he’s adding a new dimension to the playbook. Also you would be developing a future starter rather than a back-up player that for 2011and just 2011.

Based off the extremely limited snaps he got

I do like Price. And have liked him since we drafted him. But I’m not going to put all my money on him being great because of those things.

3. Herndo
4. Gronk
5. Outlet receiver – Woodhead,Benny, Ridley, Faulk

Looks like I’ll stay away from spoilers until late Monday when I get back to the modern age and download the game.

Until then, Go Pats!

Saints lost and the Raiders look lost without campbell

hopefully those two draft picks can be a little higher than we initially thought.

I’m not super optimistic for the saints pick. I think best case scenario they make it as a wild card team and lose their first playoff game. Putting us in the 20-24 range i believe.

Yeah, exactly.

It’s not like Campbell was the perfect quarterback for you guys, and Palmer should be able to get up to speed eventually. But it might end up being too little to late.

How does your schedule look the rest of the way? (for the raiders that is)
