On the Offense
I think this past game has shown exactly what this offense fatal flaw has been for awhile now. It's the WRs. It's the lack of speed at the WR position. I don't know what defenses did to our TEs, but they are no longer creating big plays down the field. I'm talking about the Gronk bomb down the seam. It's completely disappeared. When we were able to create big plays with our TEs or get some deep connections with our WRs we were unstoppable, but Ds have caught up and neutralized those types of plays from them. So we had to rely on 5'9 Wes Welker and Deion Branch creating those big plays down the field and they do work when the route and throw is perfect. Branch is an excellent route runner and has an incredible rapport with Tom Brady, but he just doesn't have the speed anymore to beat press coverage against good corner backs consistently, Wes Welker isn't that much better against press. Both are still great weapons in this offense but can be neutralized with great physical CB play. We've been relying too much on precise route running from the WRs to beat coverages which is effective a lot of the time against weaker Ds, but not all the time. The reality is we can't score 30 points if our two WRs are getting jammed all game.
Does this mean our offense will suffer the same fate as the 09 offense and 2010 offense, not having enough options for Brady to beat the defense? Is this the end of our SB hopes. Well the good news is not necessarily. Unlike the 09 offense where it was Welker and Moss and that was it, or the 2010 offense where Brandon Tate was the best option to counter press, we have better talent at the 3rd WR position. Taylor Price and Ochocinco both have have shown in the past, they can get down field and create some separation. Neither of them are "proven" deep threats in this offense, but we know they are very talented. I honestly have more faith in Price (Only 6 snaps last game and nearly had a 30+ yard rec if the ball wasn't underthrown) than Ocho, but both are more capable at beating press than Branch and Wes. It will be very interesting these next four weeks because were are going to be facing teams that have the personnel to execute the bump N run coverage gameplan as good if not better than the Steelers Defense. Darelle Revis, Antonio Cormartie, Brandon Flowers, David Carr, Corey Webster, Aaron Ross Nnamdi Asmougha, Asante Samuel, Rodgers Cromartie all can jam the crap out of our midget Wideouts. And they not only can cover they have enough talent on the lines to generate pressure on Brady. So we will have to wait and see if the Pats will finally make their two underused WRs earn their pay check, because if they don't we might be seeing the same outcome of last Sunday well into November.

Heh i was thinking the same thing. They have price and Ocho yet they refuse to use em. Ocho played 2 snaps last game and Brady over threw him on one attempt horribly. Price had 2 or so snaps got open and Brady missed him too. Branch disappears to often vs good defenses, i actually started to wonder what if we used a Ocho in Deion’s role once in a while and have price stretch the field.
They don't use Price and Ocho because Brady would rather throw it to guys he knows best: Welker Branch.
I would love to mix in price and ocho more. However…. I don’t think our offense is too much of a concern. Its a top 3 offense afterall.
I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP
the blueprint for beating the pats is out there...
we must adjust, price yes, throw more to the backs, keep running. If we don’t adjust on both sides of the ball it will be a long November.

I don't think it's the lack of speed...
it’s the lack of size that makes it really easy to jam ‘em at the line. Price, according to ESPN, is going to get more snaps in the future, which will be nice. But there’s no 6’4 220 guy out there in a Patriots uniform who laughs when a corner tries to jam him.
Small guys typically get the better of those CBs who jam them though.
well good small guys like Welker and branch. Honestly, its due to their quickness that they are able to beat press coverage. Its not about size, or speed, but skill. Use of hands.
What we need on Offense is just more consistency, and execution (goes hand in hand).

Well sure, use of hands is the most important issue.
And those who are bigger generally have longer arms. It can be overcome with extreme skill, but it’s tough to use your hands when a guy like Cromartie is using his freakishly long arms or Revis (also 6 feet or so) is using his size and strength against you.
Skill trumps everything, but size, arm length and strength makes life much easier.
But in general I see this as more of a luxury than a desperate need.
Branch always burned Cromartie.
The downfall of having long arms at the LOS, is that once you brush aside the hands, the DB can’t really do anything to pressure you at the line.
And honestly, we usually have someone lined up behind the LOS, so a DB or LB can’t press him. But hey, no offense is invincible. They’ll have its bad days.

As Ryan Clark said himself, "They (Patriots) have no one on the offensive side of the ball that scares you.........
they can’t stretch the field, there is no one that puts fear in you the way we can with Mike Wallace."
Defenses know that our guys can’t stretch the field. I find it interesting that guys (many on this blog) actually believed the offense would be fine without a field stretcher and instead play the horizontal passing game, when we all know its a copy cat league. Teams watch footage and eventually shut you down. On both sides of the ball. More creativity is needed.

we won 14 games last year with that offense.
how did those 10+ teams not figure out our offense? Did the Jets really figure us out? Well we beat them this year already, so I don’t think so. 5 teams this year couldn’t figure out our offense either.
Thats why we say this offense is fine. Because they are still a top 3 offense in the nfl.

I see your point but that was then and this is now. Teams had an entire off season to look at footage.

Some of those teams that you insinuated are just plain horrid.

sure you can say that
I guess we’ll have to see how this season goes then. So far, our offense is fine, until it proves to me otherwise.

The Giants i am certain saw that they need to jam recievers at the LOS, and from their hope their pass rush,
which is better than Pittsburgh’s btw, will get to Brady by the time the WR gets free, if at all.

I have heard from espn that Price may get more snaps next game. :)

BOB said so today...
We don’t need huge adjustments, just some tweaks. Corners playing press man to man, safeties and LBs jumping tight ends, a couple swing passes and a wheel route, woody, riddler and unleash the wolvereen. Maybe a new screen besides the fake one way, screen the other way method. Stretch a little vertically, stretch a little horizontally.
Its what Bill Walsh would do.

Tate was great at that end around. Hernandez is good at it also.

Whatever the Pats do they can't underestimate the pass rush of the Giants.
They allegedly have issues in the secondary but have some serious talent to come off the edge.
It is what it is
If BO'B is smart
we’ll see lots of screens, delayed hand-offs and quick outs. The Pats need to come out and execute early to put the Giants back on their heels a little bit. A fast-paced offense based on high-percentage completions will keep the Giants from simply pinning their ears back and going at Brady all day long. If the Pats try to get too cute or run slower-developing plays, they will give the Giants immediate control, and this offense does not play well when it is not dictating the tempo and flow of the game.
It's not that we NEED a deep threat
It’s that we would be better off with one. I had a previos post about the case for Randy moss since he’s willing to play but only for the patriots.
I think the downside is that they become reliant on the deep ball ala 07.
They need more plays like the one Brady underthrew. Plays that show run with 2te sets. What’s the point of 2 te packages if the d knows u are going to flex Hernandez out wide.
More traditional 2 te sets even without the fb it still says run. We all know the pars are going to pass even with 2 tes

The ability of the receivers hasn't really changed much since last year.
The one big difference I see is that our O-line has been pretty mediocre over the last few games, specifically on the left side. Mankins is in a bit of a slump and Light is good for one or two blown blocks a game. Then of course you have Vollmer with a bad block and a couple penalties against the Steelers. They need to shore the line up a bit and get back to picking people apart. Brady just needs a little time.
Agreed
The line play hasn’t been that great either, but I still think our WRs inability to beat the jam and get open have been the main problem. I mean yeah the O-line didn’t give Brady 3.4 seconds to throw every attempt put he should b able to find an open guy in that time
Taylor Price will be the starter by the end of the season (Said before Training Camp)
Right
but what I am saying is these were the same problems last year. I thought Branch looked really slow and Tate had disappeared by the end of the year so Ocho is filling that role nicely. Maybe, teams have figured out to bracket Welker a little better but not much has changed. I of course am not suggesting I wouldn’t like to see a little speed in our receiving corps but I think all the failed attempts with Tate, Bethel and Chad probably give BB a little angina in thinking about bringing in another speedster.
