Patriots Cut DL Albert Haynesworth

Shocking. Just when I felt like he was assimilating and would be a force going forward, he pulls some questionable antics on the sideline and now he's gone. Not a very good season to be a Pats fan. 0-2 on free agent acquisitions that were supposed to remedy the glaring holes in the team.

From CBSSports: "The New England Patriots released DL Albert Haynesworth on Tuesday following a confrontation with an assistant coach during the team's Week 9 game, according to the Boston Herald. Haynesworth, who was traded to the Patriots during the offseason, reportedly got into a discussion with defensive line coach Pepper Johnson following a play in which Haynesworth got beat by an offensive lineman during last Sunday's game against the Giants. Haynesworth finished without a tackle for the fourth time this year."

Worst defense in the league just got worse

Haynesworth was good when he played, so lets get rid of him. What the fuck is going on with this team.

by lololol on Nov 8, 2011 2:34 PM EST reply actions

He was respectable but not good. I don't see what had so many folks on this blog, all high on him to begin with.

Once again BB failed at talent evaluation/personnel assimilation.

He was pushing offensive line man back when he played an applied pressure and drew quite a few holding penalties. He was probably more productive than most other players on the defensive line outside of carter or wilfork. In fact if he gotten more play time he would have a more noticeable impact, but the team refuses to use him that much anyways. If he was cut simply that altercation…that’s stupid since the team is defensively inept. Offense are already shitting on this defense, so we cut someone who was productive? Lets get more scrubs to fill a void, and watch them do nothing. Fucking genius.

by lololol on Nov 8, 2011 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

And why the fuck is sergio brown sill on this team when he has done nothing but fuck up.

by lololol on Nov 8, 2011 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

He wasn't that productive.

The return of Brace also softens the blow of this release. Brace is another huge body that can swallow two or three blockers, and he looked pretty damn good before getting injured at the end of last season.

by nbradley07 on Nov 8, 2011 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

Still hate the move. There far more less productive player worthy of being cut than Albert. He had flashes of decency in limited play but it seems the coaching staff never really cared to give him much play time.

by lololol on Nov 8, 2011 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

They have so much depth at DL

that it’s really the first place to cut from, if you’re thinking of adding somewhere else. Of all the DLs, Haynesworth probably was the most expendable.

by nbradley07 on Nov 8, 2011 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

i don’t see anyone that has the upside of Albert. Haynesworth really looked like he was finding it. The fact he had a bad quarter or two in the last game really is a dumb reason to cut him since players have played much worse.

by lololol on Nov 8, 2011 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

Players have definitely played much worse

but not as a position as crowded as DL. Wilfork and Carter are basically cemented as starters, right now. That leaves Brace, Deaderick, Ellis, Warren, Anderson, Love and Haynesworth all competing for basically the same playing time. Of those guys, you really could only consider cutting Ellis. I can see why, if they were anticipating making a roster move, they’d cut Big Al.

I see your point about Sergio Brown, but they are SO thin at safety, cutting Brown would put them only a couple injuries away from not having a safety to put on the field. I think they screwed up the safety position when they chose to release Sanders, but that doesn’t really matter in terms of deciding what to do with the roster you have in front of you at this particular point in time.

by nbradley07 on Nov 8, 2011 3:22 PM EST up reply actions

Whats Darren Sharper doing these days? No seriously i would give him a look at this point…

by lololol on Nov 8, 2011 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

That's exactly what I posted over on the other thread about this.

On the one hand, I don’t know why they haven’t at least given him a shot. He’s got to be better than what they’ve got now. On the other hand, they had him in for a workout and apparently didn’t like what they say. 31 other teams also must agree, because he remains unemployed.

by nbradley07 on Nov 8, 2011 3:30 PM EST up reply actions

Can’t be worse than Sergio brown right? I mean if Sharper just stands there and does nothing, it would be a slight improvement.

He's moved on from football life

Well that’s what he says, but a couple million dollars might change that

His talent was never a question

Haynesworth at his best was one of the most dominant DTs in the league.

The question, post-Shanahan and pre-Belichick, was whether he’d ever put his best foot forward again and have the will, desire and motivation to become half of the player he was with the Titans.

Obviously there’s more to this story than we’ll ever know, but I think the simple answer to that question is a resounding “No.”

Can I Scream?

by Adam Fox on Nov 8, 2011 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not sure he ever got the chance.

When he played, he was definitely one of the more effective defensive linemen.

My best guess, and we’ll never know for sure, is that Belichick was putting Haynesworth through a “humbling” period. Belichick wasn’t going to let Haynesworth become an important part of this defense until he knew he could be trusted for the long haul. Having a disgruntled bench player is an easy problem to solve – you just cut him. Having a disgruntled contributor is a much harder dilemma – cutting him hurts the team on the field and probably hurts the coach’s reputation in the locker room.

If my hunch is right, I think Belichick took a smart approach that properly balanced the potential for reward and the potential for disaster. It’s a shame it ended this way, but if I were Belichick, I’d have done the same thing. After 2009, Belichick has to be really careful about what sorts of personalities he allows in that locker room. At a time when the defense really seems to be developing an attitude and an identity, there is no sense in risking it all for a ticking timebomb like Haynesworth.

by nbradley07 on Nov 8, 2011 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

Because of the possibilities...

IF he played all-out when he was on the field, he could make a difference. And up until his back injury, he did. Again, especially with Brace and Deaderick on PUP, there wasn’t a huge downside to his short tenure here.

Keep the faith!

by Marima on Nov 8, 2011 5:33 PM EST up reply actions

Didnt change much.

he hardly saw the field

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

well i thought giving haynesworth more playing time

could actually improve the pass rush…instead they went the other direction

And PS~ PFW guys said this afternoon the issue was with Pepper Johnson. After Pepper went out of his

earlier this season to back Haynesworth.

So Tom can’t have a normal life? We should just lock him in a box with Film footage for the entire football season.

Everyone is happy to see their former employer fail.

Schadenfreude is natural. But Bodden is the one without a job, at the end of the day.

Why are we cutting so many people on defense?

Who is the magical player we are looking for? Darren Sharper?

My god

Another cut for another dumb reason. This is getting ridiculous first you cut Bodden for not being happy with a reduced on defense, now you cut Albert after he has a bad quarter and an dispute with the D-line coach. My gosh this is unbelievable. This has been the worst year BB has EVER had as a GM. All his high profile guys he brought have been flat out busts. Ochocinco, Haynesworth, Dowling (this year), releasing three serviceable safeties and replacing them with ST jags. I don’t even recognize what BB is doing right now. I mean seriously these moves don’t make any sense. And I HATE the fact that for as much emphasis Bills puts on STs and how big of priority he makes it, we have been very average in that department. We are outstanding in kick /punt coverage, and we don’t really pin teams inside the 10 many times. I hope this isn’t a sign

BAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I totally called this in the offseason and was widely shouted down on this board. So I take this opportunity to gloat.

Incidentally, I also said Ocho would be a non-factor. So, I’m 2 for 2 so far.
