Report: Patriots Held Private Workout Maryland LB Adrian Moten

According to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post, the New England Patriots recently held a private workout with former Maryland linebacker Adrian Moten.

Moten stands at just under 6'2" and 234 pounds, and played all three linebacker positions during his time at Maryland.  While he won't put his hand in the dirt, he's proven productive as a blitzer, coming up with 15.5 sacks during his career with the Terps.  He's tough, never gives up on a play, and is better against the run than you would think for his size.  In addition, he's solid in pass coverage, coming up with four interception last season.

Up to this point, I haven't even mentioned the fact that Moten recently ran a 4.49 40 yard dash at his pro day.  That's a pretty eye popping number.  Unfortunately for Moten, despite the fact that he has bulked up some recently, he probably will need to add some more weight to be a fit for the Patriots as an inside linebacker in their base 3-4 defense.  His best fit would probably be as a weak-side linebacker for a team like the Colts.

Nonetheless, Moten's athleticism could probably make him into one heck of a special teams player for the Patriots, in the mold of a Tracy White or Larry Izzo.  And I'm sure this is what the Patriots are scouting him for.  While I think Moten could go higher to a needy 4-3 team, I'd expect him to go somewhere between the middle and later portions of day three.

MaLoR from Baltimore Beatdown was there for some of the workouts.

He mentioned Moten, and his play a bit in his recap.

An athletic player like Moten could potentially put on more weight a la Lawrence Timmons (who, if I am not mistaken measured in at pretty much the exact same size as Moten). Timmons now plays close to 250 lbs.

I have not yet begun to procrastinate.

Yeah

either he is solely used as a ST player or prob fits well for the Steelers since they like to use slightly undersized 3-4 ILB.

Best play ever

But in serious, Moten is a beast athletically, but his role in the NFL is probably as a special teams man. He’s a solid tackler, but was never a great pass rusher. Had a couple of picks, IIRC, and was never a real detriment in coverage, but it wasn’t necessarily his forte.

I remember watching that game...impressive jump to get the tackle.

I would like to pick him up.

can never have too many special teams personnel, especially those who have great upside in their own position.

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP
