Belichick-Era Patriots Top 10 Successes #2

Name: Logan Mankins

College: Fresno State

Drafted: 1st Round, 32nd Overall, 2005

Position: Offensive Guard

Years with Team: 6

Where is he now? Still with the Team (Under Franchise Tag)

Comments: Some Patriots fans may have animosity towards Logan Mankins, considering his holdout and contract issues he had with the team last season.  But there's no question that Mankins is one of the very best draft picks Bill Belichick has made during his tenure with the Patriots.  The team entered the 2005 draft with a need along the interior offensive line with Joe Andruzzi having departed for the Cleveland Browns via free agency.  And when the Patriots selected Mankins, many saw it as a major reach, as Mankins was widely projected to go somewhere in the late second or third round.  Nonetheless, the Patriots made the bold pick, and Mankins immediately stepped into the starting left guard spot, a spot he hasn't let up since.  In his six years with the team, Logan Mankins has never missed a game due to injury.  He's been named to the Pro Bowl squad three times and to the All-Pro roster twice.  The pick of Mankins really showed just how Bill Belichick works off his own board, and that you never know what to expect from him, even when he's on the clock in the first round.

32nd pick is later than 13th, I suppose.

I'd say that Mankins has been much better than Warren.

and Greg just wanted to group the players taken in the top 15 picks to leave room for the rest.

by Richard Hill on Apr 24, 2011 1:34 AM EDT up reply actions

what are the rest then?

I understand this is all opinion, but grouping some of the best just cause of where they were drafted seems stupid

His premise

Is that the best picks of an era take into account not only the success of the player, but the value of the draft choice. Getting a great player in the 3rd round would supersede a great player in the 1st. Greg decided to put the three players we took with early first round picks at 10, so that he could acknowledge their combined greatness, but leave room for 9 players on the list who were true steals, and thus make it more interesting to read, if not in your opinion accurate.

so...

2 guys that were a part of our Super Bowls get snubbed to Logan Mankins? whatever…I guess some people view success differently

by pats4life on Apr 24, 2011 3:34 AM EDT up reply actions

About BB

It’s not strictly about the success of the players. I thought this list was about draft successes. The players didn’t draft themselves. The list counts down the best decisions made by Bill Belichick in the draft. That’s why Mankins is higher on the list. Because he wasn’t projected as a first round pick but BB picked him. It doesn’t show Mankins’ success on the field but BB’s success in drafting him. Otherwise when he did the “Biggest Busts” list no.1 should have been a practise squad guy who wasn’t drafted, never played and who we never heard of. It’s about expectation vs. success.

then everyone Belichick picked and where they were picked should be considered the same

because apparantly what they did doesn’t matter. and, as someone already said, Brady should be a failure then because he got picked way too late

by pats4life on Apr 24, 2011 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Not exactly

You start with how good the player is. And then if he was drafted early, and projected to go early, you reduce his ‘score’ because it was an easy pick for Belichick to make. When the Lions drafted Suh last year, people weren’t saying ‘what a steal! What value!’ because he was second overall. Getting Suh 2nd overall is like getting Nick Kaczur in the 3rd. You have to be a little optimistic to expect that kind of production, but in a good draft that’s what players picked in those spots should be capable of being.

So the complete opposite of what you said is true. Brady should be number 1, and will be, because a 6th round player is not expected to become one of the greatest QBs of all time. When you get a player that good 1st overall, like the Colts with Peyton Manning, that’s a great pick. When you get that player 199th overall, that’s legendary drafting.

by 108 on Apr 24, 2011 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

you don't know how good they are

you START with projections. projections are based off of opinion, meaning that they already start off with something that is subject to bias. the way a pick pans out in the end will also be viewed by how they were initially viewed.
the draft value chart in itself isn’t a be all end all measurement either. I get wanting to classify how well a guy does, but one of the criteria in this is how well a player did ON THE FIELD. Well Seymour definitely did more for this team than Mankins ever has. Warren should at least be equal. Mayo I will gladly welcome to be ranked lower.
And the obvious contrast to Peyton Manning is Jamarcus Russell. There is no certainty to picks, no matter where they are selected on the draft board.

by pats4life on Apr 24, 2011 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Not the point.

The draft position is being used as a last final measure for

ow well a player did ON THE FIELD.

vs. what the team had to give up in order to get that player.

Expectations vs Yield

Stealiest Steal – Tom Brady (Great Player) at 199 (Low Pick)
Steal – Matt Cassel (Good Player) at 230 (Low Pick)
Good Pick – Peyton Manning (Great Player) at 1 (Great Pick)
Good Pick – Richard Seymour (Great Player) at 6 (Great Pick)
Good Pick – Nick Kazcur (Solid Player) at 100 (Solid Pick)
Bust – Chad Jackson (Bad Player) at 36 (Good Pick)
Busty Bust – JaMarcus Russel (Awful Player) at 1 (Great Pick)

I’m not sure I can lay it out more clearly than that, so I’ll have to assume you understand the premise of the articles, and simply disagree with the weighting of how high the pick was vs how good the player was.

But then I have to ask, is a useless player that was selected in the 6th round more of a bust than an average player selected in the 1st round?

by 108 on Apr 24, 2011 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

the Patriots have the picks they are given

if you are going to say Seymour at 6 is not as good as Mankins at 32, you have to realize that THAT IS WHERE THE PICK LIES. A pick that cannot be traded, such as the 199th compensatory selection used on Brady, pretty much could not have been used any better than it was. However, the very fact that Brady was picked that late does not change what he did for the team on the field.
Also, none of these include trades, which Jerod Mayo technically came from the 28th in 2007.

by pats4life on Apr 24, 2011 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

My list

1 – Tom Brady
2 – Vince Wilfork
3 – Matt Light
4 – Richard Seymour
5 – Logan Mankins
6 – Deion Branch
7 – David Givens
8 – Ty Warren
9 – Stephen Gostkowski
10 – Jerod Mayo

Missed the cut:
Asante Samuel (not enough appearances, not “Patriot Way” enough)
Dan Koppen (Sucks being a Center, but years of perfect shotgun snaps deserve mention)
Brandon Meriweather (Talent. Athleticism. Brain explosions. Not long enough in jersey)
Matt Cassel (great backup, very Patriot Way, only one year of production)

Here's a shot at it:

1. Brady
2. Wilfork
3. Seymour
4. Light
5. Trades for Moss and Welker
6. Mankins
7. Branch
8. Mayo
9. Cassel
10. Vollmer

does the fact that Jerod Mayo was picked with the 10th pick

overshadow that he came from the 28th pick initially? or does that not factor into this?
