I have zero idea what you are talking about SMP – but I promise to get back up to speed now that I can end my all-NFL-content boycott.

Yeah,

But the more times you roll a dice, the more chances one of them comes up a 6.

Ultimately it’s not a great strategy to find an all-pro, but the fact is with the guys we do have on the roster, there’s gonna be plenty of reps to go around in training camp and snaps to go around in season, so if we can find a rotational guy essentially for free, I’m game.

And we still have no idea what the coaches expect of Moore, Cunningham, and Ninkovitch, or what they’re planning in FA/trades.

by 108 on Jul 26, 2011 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

All true

I think this is also telling of how BB felt the OLB “talent” was graded in the draft as well.
I’d prefer some premier talent at the position but at the same time I’m not suggesting this is a bad strategy – more having fun with it.

In other news:

Of course, the instructions told Mr. King to use that glue in a “well ventilated area”, so these aren’t the first mistakes he’s made recently.

To be honest

The word is getting stronger (tweet from Michale Lmbardi) that Jets are close to a deal with Nnamdi and the fact that Washington signed Moss and Stallworth as UFA’s (not meaning Holmes will be a skin?) makes me somewhat nervous.

Is there really any chance they get both signed and remain under the cap?

by BJA on Jul 27, 2011 10:07 AM EDT reply actions

There's no way.

They had ~$7M in cap space BEFORE re-signing Holmes. That eats up just about everything they had left. Assuming they make a few strategic cuts (Bart Scott, LT), they could save another $5-7M. I’m not sure what they can do with Sanchez’s contract (accounting for nearly $18M against this season’s cap….ouch), but even if they can scrounge up another $3-4M, they’d have BARELY enough to squeeze in even a cheap deal for Asomugha.

They’d also be taking out a mortgage they know they won’t be able to pay back.

by nbradley07 on Jul 27, 2011 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Starting to think

I might like them to sign Aso only to fuck up their cap completely over the next few years

by BJA on Jul 27, 2011 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

If we do sign him it won't

Holmes cap number for 2011 is 2.8 mil and it gives us enough to get Nnamdi. Doesn’t look like we’ll retain Edwards though so Dariius Butler can sleep easy

by Jerrad p on Jul 27, 2011 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Well it wouldn't mess up your cap THIS year

But by 2013 that cap number is gonna creep towards 13, 14 mil. Those are the years we’re talking about your cap being screwed.

Same if a few players restructure their deals to make room to sign Asmougha, that money just gets put off til later. Money payed to a player shows up on the cap eventually. Except maybe Sanchez – any money he puts off he’ll probably never see because you’ll probably cut him in a couple years.

by 108 on Jul 27, 2011 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Holmes just locked up a 5 year deal with the Jets.

Filed to ESPN: WR Santonio Holmes reaches agreement with Jets on a five year deal.

by Robert Kaminsky on Jul 27, 2011 10:45 AM EDT reply actions

I already figured Holmes would stay with the Jets

Never thought the Asomugha to Jets would get beyond rumors though. Every team has a particular thorn in it’s side though and the Jets sure love to keep theirs sharp.

and now

they’re going after Asomugha

their strategy is to build one heck of a team for Brady’s remaining career?

by BJA on Jul 27, 2011 4:56 PM EDT reply actions

Can one assume

BB and staff has little faith in rookies contributing given the short off-season? Or is this just a safe signing to let them evaluate the talent?

We’re collecting quite a few RB’s over here though (BJGE, Woodhead, Morris, Kettani, Vereen, Ridley, Clayton)

by BJA on Jul 27, 2011 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

My money is on the safe signing option right now

90 players for camp. Competition is good for the team and Morris has worked hard at camp in the past – it’s good for the rooks. Whether he makes it through is another story and it may become clear soon enough.

Both are good.

McGowan can shut down TE’s, (as can Page), but it doesn’t hurt to have backup. I thought Page was offered a 2nd round tender, but he might be a UFA now. If we can’t get Page back, McGowan will be more valuable.

White has been a standout special teams player.

It’s good to have both going into camp until it becomes obvious we don’t need them.

Anyone with insight

in the negotiations to sign Solder, Dowling and Vereen? Shouldn’t be so hard with the new CBA. Every training sesson the miss is a big minus with this shortened offseason.

As far as I understand we’re in the business of re-signing Matt Light. This is a good thing since Solder then won’t have to be rushed into duty. However, I expected Dowling to be a big part of our defensive backfield early…

by BJA on Jul 31, 2011 7:16 AM EDT reply actions

Solder's probably waiting for other first-rounders to sign, plus he might want to know what Light's doing

Same again for Dowling – second-round picks tend to sign in bunches. Vereen’s in a similar position as they’re probably trying to get favourite contract conditions (as opposed to pay-rate, since that’s slotted).

Because there’s that new cap-type system, agents probably wish to push the boundaries by negotiating lengths and conditions aggressively, rather than money terms.

On the Nate Solder front...

They only have 8.59 mil left over the duration of the 4-yr deal. Looking at Kerrigan (4yr/8.72mil) and Clayborn (4yr/8.2mil) and dividing the difference by 4 and subtracting that value from Kerrigan’s contract yields a value of exactly 8.59 mil. The issue is how much is guaranteed- i see him getting 3 yrs max.

Asante is a CB

that needs safety help for him to be effective. Having a safety right behind the receiver like Rodney Harrison made it easier for Samuel to gamble and go for the pick-6. When he would come up empty, it was PI Calls similar to Darius Butler last season and big plays for the opposing team with goes against BB’s philosophy on the 2 gap 3-4. He didnt fit in and BB was happy to let him go.

Back in 2004 Asante Samuel flipped out when Belichick played Troy Brown at CB instead of him.

"I ain’t never said it, but Belichick, I just felt like he had a thing for me," Samuel said [to Mosher]. "He had something against me. I have no idea why. He was going to start Troy Brown, a receiver, at nickel [corner] and I’m over here sitting healthy and he don’t want to even play me."

Interesting story re: TE Will Yeatman
[Yeatman’s agent says: I did receive interest from 14 teams on TE Will Yeatman, so I had a good sense as to who was organized and who wasn’t. Since there were so many inquires about Will I took my time before selecting the team. I eventually chose the Patriots because Bill Belichick talked to me for 30 minutes describing his plan for Will in detail. I was impressed by how much he knew about Will and how many people he spoke to, including his former Lacrosse coaches. It was a tough decision as there were other attractive opportunities but I knew I had the head coach invested in the client’s development.
