Patriots Trade For Albert Haynesworth

ESPN's Adam Schefter reporting that the Patriots have acquired Albert Haynesworth from the Redskins in exchange for a 2013 5th round pick.  An unrestricted free agent in the 2009 offseason, Haynesworth signed a seven-year, $100 million contract with the Washington Redskins on the first day of free agency, February 27, 2009. The deal paid Haynesworth $32 million in the first 13 months, including $41 million guaranteed.

The Patriots will only be on the hook for $5.4M in 2011 and $6.7M in 2012 - then comes the easy part - in 2013, Haynesworth's deal gets ridiculous, so this is basically a bargain 2 year deal.  After that, he'll be pretty old anyway...

2013: $8.5M (+ $20M "discretionary signing bonus")

2014: $10.3M

2015: $11.5M

Schefter reported that Haynsworth is only owed $5M this year

because most of that money in his deal was a signing bonus

there’s a chance he could restructure the deal further too

a good gamble by the Pats as usual

only concern is if he's in shape

can he pass the conditioning drills and stay in shape, we’ve got a steal

also, what’s his role going to be? they can’t put him at nose like the Redskins tried to do

just point him at the QB and say “go” (depending on the situation)

I think he'll be RE.

That’d make a lot of sense. Also probably be an interior pass-rusher in subpackages that feature a 4 man front.

I am shocked and awed.

How does Bill do it?

the best part...

is if any other team does this, they get laughed at

because it is the Pats, it is a “brilliant” move LOL

After Randy Moss

I’m convinced Bill can get the best out of a guy like Haynesworth who seems to be looking as much for a winning team as a smart defensive mind.

I think most people would call it a brilliant move.

IF he plays at the level he can play. And he’ll do that for Belichick as much as anyone.

We got him for a 5th round pick.

He can play at somewhat of a middle ground between Redskins and Titans level of play, and be worth it.

Basically if he tries hard, stays in shape, doesn’t quit on the team, does whatever role BB wants him to do it will be totally worth it. He doesn’t have to be an awe inspiring 4-3 DT.

He could be a very good 3-4 DE, and a very good 4 man front DT in subpackages, and I’d be very happy.

by UtopianAverage on Jul 28, 2011 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Not even for next year's 5th round pick, but the year after

which tells me that not a single other team offered anything more for the guy.

I’m not knocking a potential redemption project here, but my opinion of him before the trade was that that he’s a lazy-ass pig both on and off the field. Harsh and judgmental, I know. I’m willing to take a “wait and see” approach and hope he puts his sole focus on football while he’s here and I guess I’ll have to just accept it. If he flattens Sanchez a few times – and I mean really flatten – he just might start to win me over on the football side. Maybe.

Keep the faith!

'Skins Fans

‘Skins fans are so excited to see him gone – maybe it is because we don’t pay as much attention to them, but I always thought that Shanahan was a douch in that situation. And its not like the ’Skins front office was ever a shining example of how to run an NFL franchise…

Welcome to New England, Albert! Don’t frack it up!

Shanahan was trying to send a message to the team.

Don’t know if it worked.

Plus, I don’t think he’s a very good coach.

I live in the DC area

and often listened to sports radio down here. Haynesworth and Shanahan shared the blame in what went down. One of Haynesworth’s main issues, however, was he didn’t want to play the NT in the 3-4. He wanted to be used as a part time interior pass rusher. This is exactly why I think he will work out here in NE. He isn’t going to have to ever play the NT (thanks Vince!) and when he does get on the field he is going to be used to collapse the pocket. End of story.

by Oughat on Jul 28, 2011 7:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I think they can get him to play RE if they need to.

He might not be as good at it as Seymour was, but he’s a similar size. If they can get him to play the tackle in front of him (rather than shooting the B gap and letting the OT go off and block someone else), he could be dominant there. Of course, maybe they let him shoot the B gap knowing he’ll need to be double teamed to he stopped.

Or maybe they just plan on using him in nickel and dime packages, next to Wilfork or Wright.

If by similar size you mean height...

Then ya, they’re similar.

That’s about it that, Seymour was a wrecking a machine carved out of stone. Haynesworth is carved out of Jello.

also, haynesworth can be our haloti ngata.

Our Haloti Ngata...

I like the comparison. Ngata is 330ish lbs, and does play 3-4 DE and 4-3 DT for the Ravens.

That's Washington.

Personally, I’m surprised he was the only one lying down.

You know that if he’s out there on the Gillette carpet, he’s getting to the QB. If he lies down, it’s because he’s been cut/traded for a 4th.

I don't understand this notion some of us Pats fans have.

That just coming to New England is suddenly suppose to make every football player in the world elevate his game and adopt the “Patriot way.”

Ya, worked great with Adalius Thomas, didn’t it?

Sure, Moss had a career resurgence, then reverted back. Dillon and Harrison were great, so clearly it’s worked before. But that doesn’t mean it will again, some guys just don’t have it. What’s going to happen the first time Haynesworth is late to the video room? The first time he’s napping in the back of the room while Belichick is going over film? The first time he goes to the media and says “They’re just not using me right, trying to make me change who I am.”

I don’t doubt he’s got the tools, talent wise, ability wise, he’s got the whole package to be an absolute force, he’s the real deal. But let’s not roll out the red carpet just yet and start claiming “Best Dline in football.”

Time will tell.

If he doesn't perform well enough, he's not here.

I’m not saying we have the best D-line in football right now, either. But if Haynesworth is still around come December, he’s got his head on and producing at a high enough level.

you are right time will tell

but if he doesnt turn it around we cut him and lose some dough and a 5th round pick in 2013. bb can get a 5th round pick back ten times over. i wouldnt say no risk but i wuld say low risk.

Actually Thomas did well for a couple years.

Moss did as well.

There were no rings during those years and there were with Dillon and Harrison. Difference? Maybe.

We’ve had other vets come in that couldn’t make it out of camp, and others that didn’t last long after camp. Hoodie’s not afraid to cut his losses if need be, and so it will be with Fat Albert.

The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

And Haynesworth's only affordable for a couple of years...

I’m all for keeping him for two years and letting him rebuild his career (cough, Randy Moss) and then flicking him off the instant he gets a ‘me’ attitude to some sucker other team.
