Ty Warren is the Key to a Better Patriots Pass Rush in 2011

Patriots fans have been dying for the team to upgrade at the pass rushing outside linebacker position for years now.

If New England is going to get back to the top of the NFL they're going to need to pair a top tier defense with Tom Brady and the offense, and in the modern NFL there is no better way to keep the other team out of the end zone than to create consistent pressure on the opposing quarterback.

That logic is sound, it is a dominant pass rush that the Pats are missing, what we have all wrong is the position needed to generate the pressure.

Instead of focusing on the player actually bringing the quarterback to the ground, we need to think about the players around him that are allowing him to get there in the first place. And this is where the beauty of the Patriots defensive system comes into play.

The 3-4 is innovative and dynamic because it allows defensive masterminds like Bill Belichick to move his chess pieces around the field and create situations where the offense doesn't have enough bodies to block the defenders coming at them. The best way that he can achieve these mismatches is by having a player at the defensive end position who requires two blockers to keep him at bay.

The best at this that I've seen was Richard Seymour say around '03 and '04, and it just so happens that those were the years when the Pats defense was keeping the scores low and the team was winning Super Bowls.

Seymour would constantly demand a double team, and when both an outside backer and an inside backer were lined up in the gaps on either side of him the offense had no choice but to block the outside backer with a running back or tight end.

These players were typical ill suited to protect the quarterback from even average pass rushers, and led to someone like Mike Vrabel having 15 combined sacks in 2003 and 2004.

Don't get me wrong, I love Vrabel as much as the next hardcore Pats fan, but he certainly benefited from having favorable blocking machups to fight through thanks to Seymour playing in front of him.

If that doesn't convince you, how about this. Rodney Harrison, a defensive back, had 6 sacks during that same period. How many times do you remember him flying off the end of the offensive formation untouched and bringing down the quarterback?

These opportunities were created because the defensive ends in the system were clearing the way for him.

Think of it like the Patriots running game. Instead of focusing on paying big money on the ball carriers, the team has made a commitment to putting quality offensive lineman on the field. With players like Logan Mankins leading the way, undrafted free agents like Danny Woodhead and Benjarvis Green-Ellis have thrived. Defensive ends in a 3-4 pass rush play the same role for the guys lined up behind them.

And this is where having Ty Warren back this season will make such a huge different. By all accounts this offseason Warren is looking strong and ready to return to the level of play that he's brought to the field in the past when healthy.

Warren can be the one who offenses need to double, and this will allow the players we already have at outside linebacker to shine.

I could see players like Tully Banta Cain being the next Mike Vrabel, or Patrick Chung turning into the second coming of Rodney Harrison.

The important part is that they have a defensive end who will take care of the blockers for them as they are on their way to bring down the other team's quarterback.

You're exactly right about how the (Chuck) Fairbanks - (Hank) Bullough 3-4 defense works.

I’m not certain Warren is the guy that was missing. He has not consistently demanded double teams in the past and he is usually brought in situationally to deal with the run.

I agree, though, that someone will step up and it COULD be Ty. Though if he is again solid on the left, and Wilfork is a force in the middle, we can shuffle bodies around on the right.

Mike Wright is decent at rushing from the end position, Ron Brace is a big guy on the upswing, and Deaderick might do better with time in the system.

The important thing to remember is not all 3-4 are built the same. There are one gap systems (like Dallas’), there are two gap systems (like ours), and there are One-Two gap system hybrids (like the Steeler’s run).

Actually, we steal a page from the Steelers occasionally and do one gap rushes to the QB, but LaBeau’s 3-4 Zone Blitz is built to do that any time / all the time.

Can’t wait for some football!

I feel the lockout is helping everyone's Xs and Os.

Why not keep it going until September?

Ty Warren’s return can’t be underestimated. Especially if he shifts to RE, and a healthy, at-his-potential Brace slips in at LE.

Yeah, I thought of Brace at LE, and Warren at RE (especially since he said he slimmed down a bit)

It might be a more natural fit. I’m seriously getting the training camp itch and want to see who Hoodie puts where.

Talking about football isn’t nearly as much fun as watching it.

"I could see players like Tully Banta Cain being the next Mike Vrabel"

Didn’t we have TBC and Ty Warren play in 09? Our defense wasn’t any better pass rush wise then. Sure he had 10 sacks, but It feels like six of them were against the Bills.

Yeah, TBC won't be the next Vrabel.

I think Ninkovich has a better shot at that (hey, same number even).

TBC and Vrabel even shared the field for awhile, and TBC was the one allowed to leave.

He’s alright at what he does, but I see no upside to him, and he has a knack for stupid penalties at the wrong times (like any time is a GOOD time).

Still if the three men up front are dominant, my grandma could probably reach the QB untouched…and she’s been dead for years.

Ninkovich could be a good candidate as well

I chose Tully as an example of an outside linebacker with average pass rushing skills who would benefit from having a lineman in front of him eating up double teams. Ninkovich could very easily fill that role as well.

Thanks for the comments!

Wow? TBC the next Vrable.

I was thinking more like TBC is way overpaid and excess weight. Bench leftover at best.
I was more thinking two other thing’s. Like A/. Malcom Floyd from the Chargers for a smart & talented feild streach/Deep Threat. & B/. DE Ray Edward’s !

Cutting or trading away TBC in a deal would be just as smart as it would be for adding either Malcom Floyd and/or Edward’s would be!
TBC and Brandon Tate. Both are a “WASTE” and both need 2go!
Vrable was as good as TBC was, even all through his non-playing year in Oakland TBC is so bad!
Whilhite, TBC and Brandon Tate……1st three gone no matter what-Period.
& * Bring in both Malcom Floyd and Ray Edward’s.

Way too quick to judge Tate.

Jeez, a guy blows out his knee and essentially misses his rookie year, and then in his second year he shows flashes of solid play at wide receiver and also at kick return, and you are ready to cut him? Glad your not the coach. I see a lot of upside to Tate, he still had to learn the system and establish a relationship with Brady, and I think that has happened, and he will be a very solid guy this year.

I pretty much agree with you

However, that was the first year that Seymour was gone, and it was clear that noone stepped up in his absence. Jarvis Green had an awful year, also. So, i agree with you that Warren is not going to be Seymour, never has been, never will be. At the same time, there is a good possibility that a healthy Warren gives us an all around improvement on the D line, which will not only help the run, but by having a better run D, we may be able to put teams into longer down and distances, which could help set up more opportunities for qb pressure. I also feel that our depth is much better on the D line, with and without Warren, with the newer guys having a chance to grow this year(Brace, Deaderick, Pryor, and even the addition of Marcus Stroud), we are just going to be better all around. Especially with Bodden back , and if Ras I contributes.
