My Take on the NYJ Preseason Opener
There isn't much question, the New York Jets are currently the New England Patriots' biggest rival. One can't read too much into the preseason, however certain aspects of the game can be viewed in relation to how it will be in the regular season. I will go over three positive takes and three negative takes regarding the Jets Preseason Opener.
1. Mark Sanchez may surprise in Year 3. I know a lot of us like to use the old "Mark Sanchez sucks" motto when dealing with most unruly Jets fans. He hasn't done much to prove us wrong either. However, if a QB is going to do ANYTHING, it usually happens in Year 3. While I don't think Sanchez will ever become an Elite QB, I think he can be a very solid QB. He looked very accurate on his throws, which isn't typically one of his strongest characteristics. Much has been made about Sanchez becoming a Team Captain, and wanting to "fight" Rex over his huddle. Us Patriots fans may shrug this off, but it could also be interpretted as Sanchez actually maturing on the field and becoming a leader.
2. Greg McElroy looked very solid. Despite being hit or on his back most of the night, McElroy performed very well for a rookie QB. Normally in a rookie QB's first time on the field in the NFL, if they were to be harassed as much as McElroy was, they might get an early case of "shell shock." McElroy stood tough and almost won the game for the team, if it weren't for a horrible drop on a perfect pass in the endzone.
3. Shonn Greene may be ready to take the job from LT. Greene ran very well when he was given the ball. Despite being a Preseason game, Greene lowered his shoulder as opposed to running out of bounds. While that can be considered careless and risking injury to do that during a preseason game, a Jets fan should be excited that he is running that hard, trying to improve his game. I think if the Jets coaching staff gives Greene the primary load of carries this year, we could see him top 1,000 yards on the season. If he is able to stay healthy.
Now on to the three negatives:
1. Vlad Ducasse and the O-Line in general are in trouble. The Jets do have very good linemen, primarily in Nick Mangold and D'Brickashaw Ferguson, their depth is really the issue. If the Jets even have a couple injuries along the line this year, Mark Sanchez is going to have a VERY long year. Ducasse looked completely outmatched, unable to block anybody coming near him. When is it the right time to give up on a 2nd Round Pick, when they are playing like him?
2. Muhammad Wilkerson may need more time. I know most Jets fans were excited with the pick of Wilkerson, and most Patriots fans were upset that we let him fall into enemy hands. Calm down Patriots fans, I don't think we have anything to worry about this year at the very least. Wilkerson looked like a rookie that was outmatched in his Pro Debut. He may improve as the season rolls along, however for the Jets everlasting Superbowl hopes, they may have been smart to retain Shaun Ellis to mentor Wilkerson, instead of letting Ellis fall into enemy hands.
3. Brodney Pool had a rough night. For a guy who is supposed to be a starting safety on this defense, he sure let the back up WR's have their way with him. I for one would love for Pool to continue these ways, however I think it was just a rough night. If he continues to make those kinds of mistakes, especially once the regular season starts, I would not be surprised to see him on the bench. The only problem with the bench is, who do the Jets have that would do any better?
I know it's the Preseason, and not much can be taken from the fact that starters play very little, coaches are trying to get looks at different players and schemes and the schemes themselves are very vanilla, however if the first week of the Preseason is any indication of the talent level of the Patriots and Jets, I would be willing to say that the Patriots are leaps and bounds ahead of the Jets.
The views expressed in these FanPosts are not necessarily those of the writers or SBNation.

Sanchez is a mediocre QB
but NYJ have a built up tolerance for bad play at the position. It was short quick throws against probably the worst pass defense in the NFL. Sanchez was reading the defense, or scanning his receivers. He knew who he was going to throw the ball too even before the snap, and just stared him down until he made his break.
Re: Sanchez.
Even when Sanchez had a decent offense and lights-out defense, he was, when at his best, above-average. Now, Sanchez has a weaker offense, a weaker defense and higher expectations. If the Jets are banking on a kid who has a career 70.2 passer rating (75.3 last year) to suddenly becoming a rock star, top-tier (or at least second-tier) quarterback, they’re setting themselves up for disappointment. A developing QB on a declining team is a recipe for disaster.
McElroy will be starting by the return leg in week 10.
"Perhaps it was the Noid who should have avoided me." Mayor Adam West
McCelroy should not play.
Looks like he actually understands the QB position
;)
"He’s the most fun guy to watch in the league right now," McElroy said of Brady. "There’s a lot of efficient quarterbacks, but as far as his control, his balance, the way he sets up in the pocket, the way he is so mechanically sound, it really is such a joy to watch. It really is such a joy to watch. He’s so fluid. He never gets flustered. Just his subtle movements, all of his subtleties, every little detail is addressed.
"Coach [Nick] Saban would never let me watch another quarterback play. He thinks that’s soft or something, but yeah, I obviously have spent time watching Tom Brady. He’s a hero of mine and a guy who I would love nothing more than to try to pattern my game off of."

Don't put much into Sanchez
Those were all short, safe throws. I don’t think his game was able to give us a solid picture of him at all. I’d need to see much more from him to think he can take the big leap this year.

Personally, I'd like him to make a big jump this year...

At least a decent jump in age with the women he sleeps with...
That shouldn’t be too much to ask for, right?

I might be.
I think he can only count to this many.

Wow, that's eerie!
You’re in NZ and I’m in MN, and you still knew how many fingers I was holding up. That’s just spooky!
I never even told you about that accident I had with the chain saw either.

I know those were short passes but that was decent
Considering that his starting center and backup center either were out or went down, Moore was out, the only pass Sanchez missed was to the blocking TE on his own mistake.
Actually the short passes were the ones the Jets fans wanted out of him to finally do.
Rookies are allowed to make mistakes and adjust. Mo Wilks needs another game or two under his belt.
Since you guys weren’t looking the second tier team had me excited.
K.Ellis knocked down a pass to make an interception and with Pouha needing to rest for a game he may have a chance to really get into the starting reps and more rotations. Ropati looked like an animal, you can’t teach 6"8’ but you can give that man skills to succeed and I think he’ll be a great DE.
And the home of the .... JETS!!!
Now lets get a G-D snack!!!

sanchez looked good.
the only things Im worried about on the jets is their OL. holy guacamole was the jets OL…. average. lol
defensively I dont think you guys lost a good step. Your defense is stil about the same, which is very much above average. But brodney still needs more work up on safety imo.
mason looked good, but I can tell you guys may miss cotchery. idk, i just think cotchery would have been better for you guys and sanchez but Im guessing he was asking more than he is worth.
It is only preseason, like jerrad p said below. We will have to see how the jets do in more than two preseason games to get a good look at where their depth, rookies, and newcomers as well as new starters stand.

i mean the OL looked very average in the game.... imo

OL mean little when it is a 3-step slant
You don’t have to worry about a pass rush.

It's preseason
Trying to get analysis out of this game could look silly after one game…you did get one thing right though…Ducasse sucks.
Our O-line will be great if no injuries
and only decent if it does get hit with the injury bug. Greene is already the starter over LT. Leonhard and Smith are gonna be the starters although Poole will see a pretty sizeable role. Wilkerson didn’t wow but he didn’t play bad, held the point of attack and got a hurry. Kenrick Ellis and Ropati, our 2nd string d-liners, had a strong game though
didnt two starters leave from last year?
nick mangold would sure be great to have back there though when healed. what are the other guys on the OL like now?

Only one starter
which was Woody but we lost him during the playoffs where Hunter filled in and will now be the starter. Hunter isn’t Woody, he’s good in the run game and average when it comes to pass blocking. But then we have Mangold, Brick, and Moore. All of them are elite or close to it. Slauson, our LG, was really good in the run game and average pass blocking. So the only concern for the O-line is depth, since right now our number one backup is Ducasse.
yikes.....
Yeah OL depth may be a good idea to get now…. any UDFA’s look good on the OL in camp?

I think Chris Stewart (OG from Notre Dame, UDFA)
has a solid chance to make the team along with Robby Felix( who subbed in for Turner when he got injured) But I don’t think that would cut it. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Jets signed a Vet O-lineman after Week 1. (Contracts aren’t guaranteed)…I will say the Pats have looked pretty sharp this preseason
thanks.
