Ask a Lions' Fan Preseason Edition

I like to do these Ask a ____ fan, especially in the preseason, because it's more speculation, and a lot of differentiating opinions compared to the regular season.  So I have some questions for you guys that I'd like to know more about, and then you guys can ask away.

First, I go to Ohio University, so I'm partial to Taylor Price, I wanted the Lions to draft him awfully bad when he came out, but it wasn't meant to be.  I saw he had a big first pre-season game, and was wondering how you guys project his season to be this year.  Is he going to be a 4th string guy, or could he sneak into a slot role too?

Second, what the heck is up with your RB situation?  I know Green-Ellis is the starter (well, I think he is), and Woodhead is number 2?  What about Vereen and Ridley?  Ridley has been impressive in preseason, and Vereen has been injured, I would just like to know how much do you think they'll be splitting carries between the 4 of them.  Thanks in advance!  Hopefully we'll see a good game with no injuries!

The views expressed in these FanPosts are not necessarily those of the writers or SBNation.

Taylor Price has been very impressive, and some believe by the end of the year he could be our #2 back

We run a committee in the backfield, with BJGE being the leadback, woodhead as a third down back, with ridley replacing BJGE and vereen replacing woodhead whenever one needs a break or is sitting out.

Questions for you: How do you feel about the O-lines capability to protect stafford.

Do you think that the team will beat 8-8 if Stafford remains healthy?

What are the positions of weakness on defense?

RIP Seve

Thanks for the answers

1: The O-line gets a bad rap for protecting Stafford, but we were actually 6th in the league in pass protection last year. It’s our run blocking that was terrible, but our best run blocker was hurt for most of the season as well, so that should help us out. We do know that Backus is on his way down and Riola needs to be replaced, but it’s not a panic area this season.

2: A lot of us think we’ll be better than 8-8 if Staff stays healthy. A few are obviously drunk and predict a 14-2 or 12-4 season, but I think, baring any major injuries to the whole team, we could end up 10-6.

3: CB is our biggest weakness still, especially since we upgraded our LB’s tenfold this offseason. We signed Tulloch and Durant, and we have Levy still, so our starting 3 are solid. We added Eric Wright from the Browns in the offseason, but he’s not going to be anything better than our re-signed F.A. Chris Houston, at least in my opinion. We’re kind of loaded with # 2’s now, and we need someone to step up in a big way, or we need to upgrade next offseason.

I'll weigh in too.

1. If all we’re talking about is the ability to pass protect, I’d put this offensive line up against any d-line… except maybe our own. Run blocking is still suspect, but since we’re a pass first offense I’m not too worried about our ability to put up points.

2. To be honest, I can see us going 8-8 without Stafford remaining healthy, both of our backup QBs are really capable (as was shown last year). I’ve got us capped at 12 wins (at max) but I see us around a 9-7 team this year.

3. If I had to pick a weakness, I’d say pretty much everything but the defensive line. Our CBs have been revamped and look hella better, out LBs are revamped and look hella better, and our safeties are really coming into their own but have yet to truly establish themselves with long term continuity. We’ll see how things play out over the season, but I’m glad to say there’s no portion of the defense that really scares me anymore; it’s just not quite “up to par” on the whole.

How is stafford doing?

besides suh, who would be your standouts on defense? I believe that Delmas has had a quietly successful season as well. What is your secondary, and front seven like, if you can give me a basic breakdown?

How has Bryant Johnson been doing? I was very high on that guy. It seem burleson has made the #2 spot. Who is the slot guy?

Will that RBs name (forgot! sorry. lol names slip me from time to time) have a break out year now? And how has Mikel Leshoure been doing? I heard he was injured….

What is the status of your OL? Would it be better this year than last year? Why?

How is that TE(again… name slip) doing?

Sorry if these are a lot of questions…. I tend to do that. lol

No problem

1: Stafford has looked sharp in preseason so far. 3td’s no int’s.
2: Defensive standouts would be Suh(of course) and Delmas, breakouts will hopefully be Fairley and Tulloch, and maybe a CB like Aaron Berry or Eric Wright.
3: Our secondary is mostly composed of #2 CB’s, and our front 7 is one of the best in the leagues, we have so much depth there.
4: B Johnson was cut awhile back, he was absolutely terrible last year, I think he dropped more passes than he caught. Titus Young (the rookie from Boise State) will probably occupy the 3rd WR spot.
5: Jahvid Best should have a decent breakout year and LeShoure will be out the whole season with an achilles tear.
6: Our O-line should be average again with the run and solid with pass protection.
7: Pettigrew this year should solidify himself as a top 10 TE this year baring Stafford staying healthy.

.

1. Stafford’s looking as amazing as he ever has. As far as his ability to stay healthy, that remains to be seen, but if he stays healthy he’s looking like a really good QB in what is essentially his second season.

2. Amari Spievey, no doubt. He made the transition from CB to S last year and has really started to own the position, I expect big strides from him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s better than Delmas at the end of the year

3. Our first team defense is pretty much locked down for the first time in a long time. At safeties we’ve got starters Amari Spievey and Louis Delmas; at CB we’ve got Eric Wright and Chris Houston; at LB we’ve got Durant, Tulloch, and Levy; at DE we’ve got Cliff Avril and Kyle Vanden Bosch; and at DT we’ve got a rotation of Suh, Fairley, Corey Williams, and Sammie Hill. Every position has a lot of depth (including safety, with Erik Coleman being our backup S). Every position on our defense is swappable; we’ve got three linebacker positions that all get switched around, we’ve got RCB and LCB (instead of CB1 and CB2), and LS and RS (instead of FS and SS). Basically, everyone does everything; we like it this way. Versatile players are at a premium.

4. Bryant Johnson was cut some time ago, and we’re very thankful of this fact. Plainly, the man can’t catch a football if his life depended on it. The slot guy is looking to be Titus Young, but with the number of receiving targets in Heller, Pettigrew, Best, Brown, etc, we’ll see all sorts of positions lining up wide and slot throughout the year.

5. Jahvid Best is probably the one you’re thinking of. If he manages to stay healthy, I expect him to put up roughly the same rushing yards and have a great season receiving. Leshoure is out for the season with a ruptured Achilles tendon, so we’ll see how he does next year but it doesn’t look good.

6. It’ll be better in the sense of our starters coming back healthy and some new better depth. Our pass protection should still remain in the top 5 in the league range, but our run blocking is still very suspect. Essentially, more of the same if not a little bit better.

7. All three of our tight ends, Pettigrew, Scheffler, and Heller are looking really crisp in the offseason. You’re probably asking most about Pettigrew, who has managed to fix some of his dropsies and develop into a more well-rounded player. I expect big things from him this year.

good to hear. Thanks for the responses guys!

I hope to answer some questions when my one day thing is up. I heard he did terrible last year, but I thought he was underrated when you guys got him. Ah well.

Should I pick Calvin Johnson as my fantasy WR this year, as well as detroits defense?

Our HC OC and DC are all improving with our improving players. Better talent=better play calling. Our GM has quickly become everyone’s man crush over at P.O.D. We all love him, and he’s, in my opinion, top 5 GM’s in the league.

I couldn't recommend any WR1 more highly than CJ

Detroit’s defense is looking to shape up well this year; I’ll hold judgement on top 5, but if you’re one of the guys who waits for the initial defense rush you’ll be missing out on some locked in top five targets and Detroit will be an excellent 6-10 range D/ST pickup, and has the pieces to creep into a top five D/ST this year.

Even without Stafford healthy last year, CJ was a top five WR. You’ll be taking a slight gamble on picking CJ up on whether or not Stafford remains healthy, but if he does I have no doubt that he’ll be a top 3 fantasy WR this year, if not top 1.

by Mavyrk on Aug 22, 2011 1:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Detroit is a team on the rise

and they are doing it very quickly. They have a great core of young players in Calvin Johnson, Suh, Fairley, Young, Stafford, and Best (when healthy). The running game in DET is suspect and that puts more focus (maybe too much) and pressure on Stafford to perform. Even though my allegiance is to NE, I would like to see Detroit play hard and physical with all of their heart in soul into it. It is a good measure for both teams and could give them both confidence coming into the season.

Welp, According to Brady's recent statements

it looks like the quick passing game will be in full effect. Do you guys usually get the TEs involved in the short passing game a lot or is it mainly Welker, Branch and perhaps a back?

I’m also wondering how good of run blockers the NE oline is. My impression is that they’re pretty good, but that’s not based on a whole lot of fact…

by rames on Aug 25, 2011 11:20 AM EDT reply actions

1) The TEs get involved to stretch the field a bit. Due to Grink;s size, and hands, and Herndo’s size and speed- They are used in our passing game whether it be short or long (i dont think we have a long passing game anyways). You should expect to have our TEs involved, RBs, Welker, Branch, Ocho. because they are all capable of being involved.

2) Our run blockers are generally above average. We get holes, but our backs tend to be smart in where they should go. Mankins is the best run blocker on the team, solder and vollmer so far are doing a solid job on the outside. Our center and RG though remain in question. I believe they do well.

thanks

it will be interesting to watch the double against Suh then (presuming it’s the C and RG) – that’s been most teams most effective strategy to run the ball against us….

Our short passing game is similar in the way we use our physical mismatches with the TEs (Pettigrew 6’5" 265 & Scheffler 6’5" 255 Heller 6’6" 275) and then have quick run after the catch guys in Burleson and Titus Young (Jahvid Best is ruled out and I’m hoping Calvin won’t play either in this one…)

by rames on Aug 26, 2011 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

if our center and RG guard Suh, than Suh should do fairly well against them. lol

Im not confident in those guys at the position. Unless Connely (or whoever is there) picks up from last year, I can’t see us double teaming suh effectively. Koppen is old, and he has displayed to be about average in blocking and has trouble against strong DTs.

I would expect Brady to get sacked about….. 3-5 times. Im being lenient with the 5 though. We’ll just have to see how they really do come saturday.

I'd say he gets sacked less than twice.

Last thing they want is Suh ripping Brady’s head off, so they’ll plan for that.

And Koppen can handle most DTs, it’s the 350 lb NTs he struggles against. Suh, of course, isn’t most DTs, and if he’s able to go 1 on 1 with Koppen it’s a win for Detoit. But a double with Connolly or Mankins and quick passes from Brady should nullify him for the most part.

You really think our O-Line is that bad? 3-5 times sacked? Really?

He may get sacked, but i doubt its Suh that’ll get to him. I agree with ISN twice at most. Suh will be doubled and thus be nullified.

I think it won't be easy to double him.

Suh is a very very strong DT, and having him and connely when he goes to the right side will not nullify him by any means, but will slow him down a bit. Suh plays LDT anyways so he will line up toward connely and koppen.

I think you are overvaluing our OL. It is top 3 in the league, but even the #1 OL will have trouble against Suh, Corey Williams in the middle, and Vanden Bosh and avril on the outside. Its one of the top 3-5 DL in the league. SO I don’t think its out of stretch if the pats give up 3 sacks.

because koppen is not that great a center anymore. although mankins MAY MAY MAY be able to hold his own corey williams. I havent seen fairly play yet.

Koppen and Connely (who went out injured after the first quarter i believe) both have trouble against really good DTs.
