New Century Silver's 2011 Season AFC Predictions

Hi everyone, we are approaching the final week of preseason, and before we know it our favorite team(s) will be hitting the field for their first game. With that in mind, right now is a great time to make some season predictions. I'll start with the AFC East, and gradually move from best team to worse, outlining my reasons for why each team will succeed or fail.

So lets start with the Pats. I'd say no less then ten to eleven wins is fair, with the actual number being closer to twelve to thirteen. I doubt the turnovers will be as much of a highlight as last year, but the stronger defense should step in to keep the record similar. Last week I wouldn't even be surprised if they went 16-0, as in 2010 only two games off it and, IMO, the 2011 team could rival the team of 2007. Despite being preseason, the Lions game has brought my expectations down a bit.

Final prediction: 12-4, number-one seed in playoffs

Now comes the Jets, a team I'm not quite sure what to make of. On the one hand, they seem like a legitimate team, having beaten us two out of our three losses last year. On the other hand, they've only gotten weaker since last year, and, had it not been for those three comebacks in the final seconds, would have finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs. I like Sanchez and think he'll make up for some of their weaknesses, but the chances of Rex's superbowl dreams finally coming true aren't too good.

Final prediction: 11-5, number-five seed in playoffs.

The Bills will, like the Lions, be improved. Last year they lost three games in overtime, as well as sevearl others by one possession. Considering their schedule I doubt they'll have a winning season, but they could come close.

Final prediction: 8-8

The Dolphins won't do very well, having lost some key players and not having had a very good record to begin with. They may fall to last in the division, as the Bills are getting better, and they seem to be getting worse. Maintaining their record from last year would be an accomplishment.

Final prediction: 4-12

Now onto the AFC south, where the Colts will be back to their usual form. Though I wish I was, I'm not one who is worried about Manning's neck. Still, they have to deal with the Texans, who have a good chance of splitting the season with them and/or making the playoffs.

Final prediction: 12-4, number-two seed in playoffs via tie-breaker with Pats

After loading up their defense in the draft, I can see the Texans making the playoffs. I don't think they can win their division, especially if Manning starts in week one, but they could come close.

Final prediction: 10-6, number-six seed in playoffs

The Titans started off well last year, but their season derailed after the bye. I don't see this happening again, but doubt they'll be anywhere near the playoffs. Schedule is harder then last year, so, even if they don't collapse at any point in the year, they'll have a hard time improving.

Final prediction: 8-8

Lockout + new QB isn't good news for the Jags, and they almost certainly will do worse then last year.

Final prediction: 5-11

The Steelers will be coming off Superbowl-hangover, but will still claim the division. Their defense is the best in the NFL, and, unlike the Jets, combined with an offense. Alot of their wins will be thanks to an easy schedule, at least compared to the schedule of the Colts, Pats, and Jets.

Final prediction: 10-6, number-four seed in playoffs

I can see the Ravens missing the playoffs. They're getting older, and Flacco doesn't seem as good as the other AFC QBs, such as Brady, Manning, or even Sanchez. They do have the advantage of an easier schedule, but when you look at their team I just can't put it above the Texans or Jets.

Final prediction: 9-7

Like the Lions and Texans, the Browns will improve. A winning season is possible, ut shouldn't be expected.

Final prediction: 8-8

I wouldn't be surprised if the Bengals finished last in the NFL. They were bad last year, are a dysfunctional organization, and have no reason to believe they'll do any better any time soon. At least they'll get a chance at Andrew Luck.

Final prediction: 2-14

There is one playoff spot left, and I believe the Chargers will claim it. Last year was luck for the Chiefs, and the NFC west is really only between them and the Chargers. Having one of the statistically-best offenses and defenses can never hurt, though having Norv Turner can.

Final prediction: 11-5, number-three seed in playoffs

The Chiefs improved too quickly, and, for their two steps forward, they'll take one back. Its possible that they won't have a winning season, but playing in the west makes this unlikely.

Final prediction: 9-7

As a team that was bad to start with, it doesn't help to lose the NFL's second-best corner. Raiders and Broncos will battle for last in their division, and possibly last in the NFL.

Final prediction: 5-11

Some people say you have to break and egg to make an omelet, but Josh McDaniels just broke an egg. Compared with their current choices of Brady Quinn, Tim Tebow, and Kyle Orton, I'm sure they would love welcome Andrew Luck to their team in 2012.

Final prediction: 3-13
