Safety Brandon McGowan Released

Ian Rapoport: The Patriots [have released] safety Brandon McGowan. That move [opens] up a spot on safety and special teams, which can be viewed as good news for special teamers like Bret Lockett, rookie Malcolm Williams and safety Josh Barrett. We can also confirm the Pats have an interest in free-agent safety Dashon Goldson. The former 49er was in for a visit. So it looks like they’re doing their homework. Without McGowan, that leaves Brandon Meriweather and Patrick Chung, the presumed starters, along with veteran James Sanders as the primary trio. [8/08/11 Update: Dashon Goldson re-signed with the 49ers for a one-year deal.]
