No doubt this will be interesting. I can talk about the defense as a whole, but whether we go 4 DL, or 3, its interesting to see who does what in what situation.
Who will be at LE/RE in our 3-4?
If we stay at a 3-4 base alignment, the most questions would be at the LE since Albert is most likely to start at RE. We have Shaun Ellis, but in my honest opinion, I think he'll get subbed in at RE when we take Albert out. Mark Anderson and Andre Carter are better fit in the 4-3 alignment, so that really leaves Brace, Deadrick, or maybe someone who just has the size like Kyle Love (6'1" 310 lbs.). Brace and Deadrick are injured now, so that LE position is really questionable. If we have a 3-4 alignment, make sure you note who is on the left side.
Gerrard Warren I heard is back, so I guess its more than likely he will be our LE this year if Brace and Deadrick don't get healthy soon.
How do Mark Anderson and Andre Carter fit into the mix?
I have heard from one of our bloggers that Andre Carter was a great leader on the redskins. Before the skins moved to a 3-4, Carter found success in his natural 4-3 DE position the previous year raking up 62 tackles and 11 sacks. When moved to 3-4 LOLB, he found little success with 44 tackles and 2.5 sacks (then again, according to nfl.com he only started 5 games: http://www.nfl.com/player/andrecarter/2504738/profile). I look to see him MAYBE compete for the starting ROLB spot if we are in a 3-4, but I mostly am interested where he'll play in the 4-3 alignment in certain situations.
Mark Anderson is only 28 years old, and when traded to the texans last year he found a certain level of production, but not much. He is basically in the same boat as Andre carter, in terms of the questions, and where he will play.
Pre-season is only 3 days away, so time will tell whether or not one of these guys will get cut, or become an important cog in our defensive adjustments.
If moved to 4-3, who are our Ends going to be?
Potential 4-3 Ends are Cunningham, Andre Carter, Markel Carter, MAYBE Shaun Ellis, Mark Anderson, and Eric Moore. If we move to 4-3, I can see why we would keep anderson and andre carter because we need depth at those end positions. 6 guys are just enough if you ask me. Moore did well when we ran the 4-3 with him at End last year. I think he would have a good chance of starting.
Cunningham has not really impressed many in camp at the 4-3 End position, but I'm not willing to judge him until I see him play in all 4 pre-season games. The other guys look to be just as likely to replace cunningham if he does not improve. I heard Mark Anderson looked pretty good at camp, making a couple pass rushes. The positions mostly talked about in the headline are the WRs and DBs, so I can't really get a good understanding of how they are all doing. Still, my projected 4-3 lineup would be:
Anderson/Andre Carter/Shaun Ellis, Haynesworth, Wilfork, Cunningham. Who gets the start over who will be interesting to see this preseason.
