New England Patriots Final Cuts Open Thread

Where's the Beef? (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images)

According to Jeff Howe:

The Patriots have already informed some players of their fate. Expect the news of cuts to start coming soon

So here's an open thread to keep track off all the movement throughout the day. There are a lot of players that must be released so it will be interesting to see which players stick on the roster. Will Brandon Tate and Matthew Slater both make the team? Which defensive linemen will be cut? Who will remain on the offensive line? Will the team take three or four tight ends? There are many questions and there will be answers on the way.

In the mean time, check out Ashto's final roster prediction and compare your notes!

Read my final prediction after the jump.

I wouldn't be surprised if we kept Moulden and Butler instead of Arrington

But I also would be surprised by any other combination of the three. I am interested to see how it goes.

That's not why he'd stick,

It’s because he still plays STs and can provide depth at CB. And depth is needed with injuries to Bodden and Dowling, and Butler being Butler.

I agree

If he sticks, it will be because of his STs value. He isn’t a STs demon like White or Slater, but he is good enough. If BB feels that one of the other corners with more potential has about the same ST value, I can see him being let go. He is a passable back up at CB, and can be better or worse than Butler there depending on the day.

by Chari on Sep 2, 2011 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

He's a fine special teamer

in 2009 he had as many ST tackles as Slater, in half as many games. In 2010 he got a ST touchdown on a Chung block, and would’ve blocked the game-winning San Diego field goal if the field goal had been straight enough to go over. The kicker shanked it, and Arrington didn’t touch the ball, but if it was straight it would’ve been plugged by Kyle.

I know he started last year, and he did a better job than anyone could have expected

But I could see Molden and Butler over him because of their potential. I think Arrington is about as good as he will get, and if Molden or Butler can play STs as well, they could sneak on instead of him. Like I said, I also wouldn’t be surprised if he stayed and one of the others got cut. I think that is one of the most interesting roster spots this year, along with WR.

by Chari on Sep 2, 2011 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Molden and Butler are both awful.

Seriously, I wish both could get cut. I have no idea why we even brought Molden in this late in the preseason.

I hate the reference to a third years potential.

This is the point they either get it or they likely never will.

by Oughat on Sep 2, 2011 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I would be very surprised

Arrington’s a stud special teamer first, occasional CB starter second. He sticks solely for his special team skills at the very least.

Are any of these upcoming releases worthy of a draft pick via a trade???

I would think the PATS have a few players that other coaches would happily take with a draft pick versus fighting over them in FA.

by OneOpinion on Sep 2, 2011 3:02 PM EDT reply actions

Not the first ones...

…maybe some of the second, but if these are players that have to be cut, only a couple players would be worth a late round pick since teams know they’ll be let go. Only teams that want to have first choice instead of going through the waiver wire will offer a pick.

by Richard Hill on Sep 2, 2011 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I told you this before...

teams know other teams have to cut players, so they won’t trade for guys that they know will be free agents soon enough.

Your limiting the discussion to the obvious reality that teams have to cut players

My question was intended to generate a discussion that focuses on the few player releases that would generate a feeding frenzy and potentially expensive, time consuming contract negotiatioins – with no guarentee that the player will choose your team even if you offer the highest dollar amount.

For example, if Mike Wright is to be released by the PATS. He has been very close to a SB ring. He might only want to join a team that has immediate potential of winning a SB ring. He may not desire to be on a team that is still on the outside looking in – with upside potential (i.e. the Lions).

Yet, I would think the Lions would covet the addition of Mike Wright in their DL rotation. He’s only 29. If he is healthy, Wright could be valued by the Lions enough to trade a draft pick for him before he is released instead of waiting for his release and hoping that he’ll want to accept their offer as a FA. The Lions may not want to risk a negotation war with the Jets or the Colts or the Steelers.

Imagine that possibility: The PATS get Ellis and the Jets get Wright.

Other posters might have thoughts regarding other potential players on the release bubble. Guys like Tate, G. Warren, Butler, Meriweather, and etc. have been tossed around frequently as release candidates and/or trade bait. The discussion might go in the direction of what teams could use these player’s talent – and what might be the draft round obtainable.

by OneOpinion on Sep 3, 2011 8:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Post training camp trade value is based on the simple idea of supply and demand.

It just so happens that after 32 teams have just cut 37 players the supply is way up minimizing trade value. Since the only teams that are searching for trades are ones that either lost important players to injury or failed to shore up positions through free agency and the draft, the number of interested teams should be few. Yet again further minimizing interest and lessening trade value. This is all just a really fancy way of saying what Comedic has been telling you. Teams are going to wait for the cuts and then scoop up whomever catches their eye.

Negotiation wars are less likely to occur at this point because teams are either going to have their rosters pretty well set or their cap space is up against it. Nobody is going to pay a draft pick for a fringe guy that may not make the roster. Obviously, you have brought up a guy like Mike Wright, who isn’t a fringe guy. However, teams are going to know that if he is cut its likely due to health concerns….who is going to drop a draft pick for that. Of the guys you mentioned Merriweather is probably the only one that would get a return because nobody expects him to get straight cut.

by Oughat on Sep 3, 2011 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Thanks. Nicely explained.

I only thought that perhaps elite teams like the PATS may enjoy a bit of leverage that exceeds the norms of supply and demand because of their positional depth – and the player’s experience. As you pointed out, Wright and Meriweather are not “fringe” players and they have played for a winning organization. Tate, likewise fits this mold, and all three have been starters at different points of their career.

That said, I am not in the camp that wants Meriweather released. I do expect Tate to be released. As for Wright, I have had him as an IR candidate though he did play against the Giants so it is now hard to say where he is slated. If Wright is both healthy and viewed as a non repeating concussion concern (i.e Savard with the Bruins), I would opt for Wright over G. Warren. I have always felt that Wright is an excellent guy in the rotation.

Wright over Warren creates excellent back-ups for each starter.

Starter: Vince Wilfork, Albert Haynesworth, Shaun Ellis
Rotational back-up: Kyle Love, Myron Pryor, Mike Wright

by OneOpinion on Sep 3, 2011 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions

there a 4 D-lineman positions now

Ellis and Wright are sub rushing DT/jumbo DE. Wright is the backup to Ellis. Love in for Wilfork, but G Warren for Haynesworth. Those players have similar skills sets to each other and make it more smooth to sub in/out players

Watching Pats - Giants again...

…definitely going to watch Gostkowski on kick offs. It definitely seems like he’s been practicing dropping the ball right before the midway point of the end zone to entice a return, except the kick off unit is in position to take down the returner around the 15 yard line. Pretty interesting to watch.

by Richard Hill on Sep 2, 2011 3:07 PM EDT reply actions

I noticed a lot of that in the preseason.

Kickers from a bunch of teams seemed to be kicking shorter than they knew they could to try and get a return to the 15 instead of a touchback. I think it’ll become the norm, more or less, and undo most of the protective effects of the new rule. Either they scrap it in the future, or scrap kickoffs entirely.

Yep.

Meriweather

Don’t see him getting cut with Sanders out. Unless they have a solid outside option lined up, cutting both Meriweather and Sanders would leave them dangerously thin at the safety position.

But stranger things have happened.

So Digs>Barrett? Hmmm

I am not a fan of Digs, but if BB thinks so, who am i to disagree?

Brace is a good player, just injured

Both will be on reserve lists so it’s a moot point.

And Richard still has practice squad eligibility.

thats a good thing-

next season could use more young talent at DT

by BostonBeasts on Sep 2, 2011 4:54 PM EDT reply actions

Can't cut him.

The safety spot is already thin enough, no need to get anything thinner right now.

by totheights on Sep 2, 2011 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.

Plus I actually kind of feel like playing Meriweather closer to the box might help decrease his stupid plays, and also take more advantage of his athleticism and ability to deliver hard hits.

by UtopianAverage on Sep 2, 2011 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions

then what does chung do?

he isnt the over-the-top type safety you put back either

But Meriweather isn't as good a tackler as Chung.

I’d rather not have a RB with a free path to the end zone like he would with Meriweather in the box.

by ISN on Sep 3, 2011 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

We've seen more of it this preseason than in years past.

And honestly I feel like Meriweather is a good tackler. He can take bad angles to the ball when he’s deep in space, but when the ball is right in front of him I am tremendously confident in his ability to tackle the ballcarrier.

And who knows at this point whether it’s what Chung does, or whether it’s what Meriweather will do. You never know, with BB, and with some shifts in the defense this year having already occurred.

I’m not saying it’s definitely going to happen, just saying it’s a possibility. Or maybe just something I’d like to see happen.

by UtopianAverage on Sep 3, 2011 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, we know now.

"Perhaps it was the Noid who should have avoided me." Mayor Adam West

by ISN on Sep 3, 2011 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

If the D-line actually generates a bonifide pass rush, we might very well see players like Meriweather and Butler have far more successful results because the coverage time will be lessened and the pass routes will need to be less complex.

Pressure changes everything. A. Carter might be the biggest off season acquisition. If he becomes a serious edge rusher, lots of great things can happen in the wake of his success. Add to the mix Haynesworth and guys like Ellis and opposing QB’s might finally be forced to throw it sooner than they want – or be sacked.
