Roster Cuts Begin: Patriots Announce Release of Eight Players
The Patriots have gotten a head start on roster cut-downs in advance of tomorrow's 4:00 PM ET deadline to have rosters trimmed to 53 players. This afternoon, the team announced the release of eight players:
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots have released eight players today in anticipation of tomorrow's NFL-mandatory cut to the 53-man roster.
The Patriots released veteran LB Ricky Brown, OL Jonathan Compas and DL Darryl Richard; first-year players TE Carson Butler and WR Buddy Farnham and rookie free agents OL Mike Berry, RB Richard Medlin and OL Corey Woods.
None of those players can be seen as a surprise, as all were longer shots to make the Patriots roster. If they can clear waivers, I would expect Darryl Richard, Carson Butler, Buddy Farnham, to all be added to the team's practice squad. Corey Woods and Richard Medlin will likely also receive some practice squad consideration.
The Patriots' active roster now stands at 72 players. They still have plenty of work to do to trim down their roster in the next 24 hours.

8 down, 19 to go
Buddy Farnham was by far my favorite of the group, but it was inevitable.
Keep the faith!
I hope Darryl Richard makes PS. And let Deaderick go.

I was hoping ricky brown would stay. But he's PS material.

Belichick was trying to outsmart Josh McDaniels
and did

I see him shopping Tate and Edelman
but Slater hasn’t shown much in the regular season to warrant someone going after him

If BB trades Meriweather- It's a bad sign for him
and a good sign for Sergio Brown and James Ihedigbo

I will make updates right away on my roster post
although changes to the guys I have at the 53 aren’t really gonna change much if at all

Too bad
I really liked Buddy Farnham. Not just because he looked pretty good in open field juking people out of their shoes if I’m remembering right, but because he’s the only player I can think of that wears the same number I’ve always worn, which automatically gives him bonus points in my book.
if he can make it past waivers
it would be awesome

How does BB put Gurode and Haynesworth in the same lockerroom.
I know he is good at making people behave and all but how many times do you have a situation where one of them has headstomped the other in the past?
They both are men. And this is a business. Put that crap in the past. Yes, Haynesworth tried to
decapitate him…………….it happens. But hopefully, enough time has passed since that altercation and i would bet all is forgiven.
Dear God i hope.

Kind of ironic...
…to have the seemingly reformed Albert Haynesworth and Andre Gurode on the same team.
Would love if we signed Gurode.
Light (Solder), Mankins, Koppen, Gurode (later on Cannon), Vollmer is a real solid line for the future as far as starters go. Going forward, the Pats only need focusing on upgrading the center position and getting some quality depth (I still believe Connolly and Wendell bring some decent quality depth just in case).
by BJA on Sep 3, 2011 1:18 AM EDT up reply actions
For the near future
It could be that line-up for this season, then assuming Cannon is ready to be a full time starter at RG by next season, we could move Gurode over to center for a few years which at least on paper sounds like an extremely huge and dominant line.

Except Koppen is far more reliable a snapper, even though he may not be big enough.
Two massive Guards on either side help there – look at the Saints.

i saw a look at the replay of the 64-yd catch he had
giants coverage broke down and Slater showed some great burst running after the catch. i think he really wants it

Carter to PS?
They might try and get Lavarius there too, don’t know if he’s worth it though…

Pats released Eric Moore?
WTF. maybe i’m a sap for the UDFAs and Arena Football dudes. but shit i thought Eric Moore was doing a great job
Moore cut must mean they're confident in JC.
Guess Anderson and Carter stick…

absolutely on Carter he's redonk.
at least Eric Moore is a reliable dude we can call on unless somebody nabs him

Eric Moore had that 3-4 OLB experience though.
I feel like the more players like that BB has in his 4-3/3-4 defense then the more versatile and deceptive it can be. Sad to see him go
Taylor Price will be the starter by the end of the season (Said before Training Camp)
moore was a sub rush DE last year
kind of what anderson is going to do now

Tin foil hat predictions
Ochocinco gets cut. Tate to the ir. Pats carry five receivers. Slater sees time at receiver and shows that he is a downfield blocker to rival Hines ward.
Vereen to the ir. Morris makes the team. Faulk plays again, midseason.

Yeah, I've read the CHFF articles.
Weird how the entire media loves Manning, but Prisco thinks otherwise.
Thanks for the tip though.

Morris has been cut?
Damn, always liked that guy.
"There is an old saying about the strength of the wolf is the pack, and I think there is a lot of truth to that. On a football team, it's not the strength of the individual players, but it is the strength of the unit and how they all function together." - Bill Belichick
No, 8 more.
Do you mean two to IR? (PUP players like Kevin Faulk don’t count towards the 53-man roster total)
19 cuts needed to be made today. With two on IR (Brandon Deaderick and Ron Brace) that leaves 17.
Nine cuts were made today, so that leaves 8 more to go as of now.
Keep the faith!
I would think Gurode is a lock as the RG. Connolly goes back to his role as a back-up, and someone else is cut today.
Well we haven't signed Gurode, right?
We’ve worked out so many veteran’s, i’m doubtful we sign him.
Brady > Mallett > Hoyer > Sanchez

So glad to see Meriweather gone
Even if it leaves a big hole at safety, I was so tired of seeing his godawful angles and poor coverage.
Oh c'mon people he wasn't darius butler at safety
he was our most durable safety and weekly starter now who’s going play aside chung?
Taylor Price will be the starter by the end of the season (Said before Training Camp)
Literally ANYBODY else
What I don’t understand is why not keep and start Sanders? He was leagues above Meriweather.
No way
Sanders was a more disciplined player, but didn’t have half of Merriwethers speed, and skills. At times the disciplined player is valuable, of course, but obviously BB didn’t like what he saw in Sanders this year. Very interesting stuff going on though.
Josh Barrett stays then?
Chung – Brown – Idehigbo – Barrett
I guess it could be worse. But there’s probably another move coming.
Brady > Mallett > Hoyer > Sanchez
- beantownboy171
I fully expect Merriweather to thrive elsewhere.
But if he’s not right for this team, he’s not right for this time.
Brady > Mallett > Hoyer > Sanchez

I agree. I think he will make noise for another team.

Unbelievable we couldn't trade Merriweather,
teams around the NFL must really not want to give the Patriots anymore picks than they have.
