Roster Cuts Begin: Patriots Announce Release of Eight Players

Buddy Farnham was among Patriots players released today.

The Patriots have gotten a head start on roster cut-downs in advance of tomorrow's 4:00 PM ET deadline to have rosters trimmed to 53 players.  This afternoon, the team announced the release of eight players:

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots have released eight players today in anticipation of tomorrow's NFL-mandatory cut to the 53-man roster.

The Patriots released veteran LB Ricky Brown, OL Jonathan Compas and DL Darryl Richard; first-year players TE Carson Butler and WR Buddy Farnham and rookie free agents OL Mike Berry, RB Richard Medlin and OL Corey Woods.

None of those players can be seen as a surprise, as all were longer shots to make the Patriots roster.  If they can clear waivers, I would expect Darryl Richard, Carson Butler, Buddy Farnham, to all be added to the team's practice squad.  Corey Woods and Richard Medlin will likely also receive some practice squad consideration.

The Patriots' active roster now stands at 72 players.  They still have plenty of work to do to trim down their roster in the next 24 hours.

Edelman has to stay. Welker just got injured. He might be fine, but his style of play and their extensive use of him requires a back-up. Edelman not only offers a superb alternative to Welker in the slot, but he is also an excellent return guy.

Too bad

I really liked Buddy Farnham. Not just because he looked pretty good in open field juking people out of their shoes if I’m remembering right, but because he’s the only player I can think of that wears the same number I’ve always worn, which automatically gives him bonus points in my book.

what would be the price tag for him. would he want 5.5m. he would seem to be an upgrade

Kind of ironic...

…to have the seemingly reformed Albert Haynesworth and Andre Gurode on the same team.

Would love if we signed Gurode.

Light (Solder), Mankins, Koppen, Gurode (later on Cannon), Vollmer is a real solid line for the future as far as starters go. Going forward, the Pats only need focusing on upgrading the center position and getting some quality depth (I still believe Connolly and Wendell bring some decent quality depth just in case).

by BJA on Sep 3, 2011 1:18 AM EDT up reply actions

For the near future

It could be that line-up for this season, then assuming Cannon is ready to be a full time starter at RG by next season, we could move Gurode over to center for a few years which at least on paper sounds like an extremely huge and dominant line.

by indy pats fan on Sep 3, 2011 1:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Except Koppen is far more reliable a snapper, even though he may not be big enough.

Two massive Guards on either side help there – look at the Saints.

Tin foil hat predictions

Ochocinco gets cut. Tate to the ir. Pats carry five receivers. Slater sees time at receiver and shows that he is a downfield blocker to rival Hines ward.
Vereen to the ir. Morris makes the team. Faulk plays again, midseason.

3 qbs

No, 8 more.

Do you mean two to IR? (PUP players like Kevin Faulk don’t count towards the 53-man roster total)
