NFC Divisional Playoffs: Giants (#4) at Packers (#1) Game Thread

New York Giants (#4) at Green Bay Packers (#1)

Sunday, January 15th, 2012 | 4:15 PM ET | TV: FOX

Giants Coverage: Big Blue View

Packers Coverage: Acme Packing Company

Some games represent a lose-lose situation for fans. Today's NFC Divisional playoff game between the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants is one of those games for Patriots fans.

You won't find a Patriots fan that's a fan of the New York Giants, and it would be tough to even imagine rooting for them in a playoff game. But at the same time, while I respect what the Packers have done this year, getting Aaron Rodgers and the 15-1 Packers out of the playoffs could only be a good thing for a potential Super Bowl match-up for the Patriots.

Ultimately, I think the Packers are going to come out with a lot of emotional. Not only due to the unfortunate Michael Philbin situation, but also due to the fact that they've been completely disrespected. The Packers won 15 games and Aaron Rodgers is likely going to be the NFL MVP, yet it seems that every other analyst is picking the nine win Giants to upset them. The Giants aren't a bad team, they're just inconsistent. I think they play the Packers close, but I think Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offense outpaces and slows down the Giants pass rush, leading to a two score victory. Greg's Prediction: Packers 34 Giants 24

He predicts the Giants to win with absolutely no thought

I know you should have appreciation and love for your old team, but he is so biased it’s ridiculous.

Rodney Harrison (NBC) and Tedy Bruschi (ESPN) sometimes show their bias, but they’ve also been critical of the team at times, even predicting them to lose games. Never would see that with Strahan.

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

Ok, let's hypothetically say that would happen

Would Pats fans rather they face the 49ers or the Pack? Some make it sound as if winner of this game will be the Pats opponent in the SB…

Possibly. Depending on what his career is like. Still so early.

But Rodgers will have stats (which Brady just started to have in 2006 or so) and titles most likely.

We dont know the future.

As of now, Brady is the best QB ever. Im sure Rodgers would be in the talks of it as well.

We have plenty of reasons to name Brady the best QB ever. Even the players themselves vited Brady as the #1 player in the NFL currently.

In the future? Im sure Rodgers will probably be in the talks of best ever as well. I think the media has Brady>Manning now.

Rodgers still has a lot of years left in his career (barring injury)

Who knows how his career would be like when it’s done? He may end up being the best ever. No one ever expected Brady to be in that conversation with Montana years ago.

It's not as if Rodgers is just throwing Tebow-esqe non-spirals up there

And I think it’s a tad misleading. Maybe Rodgers could be just as good without those playmakers. Being Pats fans, we’re fortunate to see how Brady really is because he was able to win SBs without much offensive playmakers. However, his numbers went above and beyond when the Pats got Welker, Moss, Gronk, Hernandez.

Packers, if you allow an end of-half-hail-Mary to go for a TD, you don’t deserve to win a single game.

Whoever is calling the defensive plays for the Pack should be fired.
Their O is uncharacteristically off.
This is what happens when teams win the SB – they’ll never have success the following year. This is why I got very fed up with the media for their "can anyone stop the Pack? bs. I predicted this – why couldn’t the so-called “experts”?

Then thats why

everybody was wrong in going all “can anybody stop the Pack”?

Bottom line is, I predicted they wouldn’t go 16-0 and wouldn’t win the SB. I also predicted that, 5 years from now, the 2011 Packers would be pretty much forgotten. Theres still a half left, but it seems like I’m right.

And thats not gloating: I’d say me picking the Packers to lose was relatively easy, perhaps easier then picking the Pats over the Tebows. The fact that so many “experts” got this wrong is worthy of a facepalm.

Its because they were on an amazing run. Can’t fault the media for taking notice that the Pack were getting win after win. Even if it was against weakish teams.

And you never know man. Things happen. Even when the pats lost a couple playoff games, they still are in a position to get to the superbowl, and thats all the pack needs to do. Just get in the playoffs, and anything can happen from there. And I think they can do that on a year to year basis.

Well I guess I can't see the short term mattering.

Believe me, I’m not one of those who says “oh, all that matters is that you win the SB” but what have the Packers done this year? From week 1 to week 17 they topped the power rankings, and yet they don’t have the TD record, didn’t go 16-0, and didn’t get the yardage record. Their D isn’t worth anything either.

Like I said: They had a great season that virtually every fan in the NFL would want. But they weren’t record book great. 5, 3, or even 1 year from now nobody will talk or think about the 2011 Packers.

Oh of course.

Ad the Packers had all of that in the regular season.

Coming into the playoffs, they were the best team in the NFL in 2011 season. Of course there are other factors to it. Thats when you chose to believe the power rankings or not. If the Pats were #1, I wouldn’t believe it because their schedule was also weak. Power Rankings are just the ranking of how a team did in the regular season. Plain and simple. You don’t have to believe in it.

A lot of dropped balls by GB receivers today

and Rodgers doesn’t appear to be brining his A-game (as the rest of his team). Giants on the other hand…they’re definitely outplaying the Packers today. If their red zone offense was more efficient, this would be outright dominating.

Saints and Pack get complacent, while the Pats are men on a mission.

That non-fumble call that stood

Holy cow. There was no interpretation needed. How a guy could look at that film and have a question as to whether the ball was coming out before the runner was down is completely beyond me. There’s no credible way — the guy should lose his job.

I'm really hoping the Pats impressive defense remains the rest of the playoffs

These high octane offense/subpar defense teams with being knocked out by defensive teams are a little worrisome. and I know many would say “well they’ll have to try to outshoot TB and our offense” but the Giants put 37 on GB today and SF dropped 36 against the Saints. Defense will always remain important.

The difference is

the saints cant win off the superdome and the Giant have Eli Manning
Ravens have Ray Rice. Stop Rice and protect Brady and we should be fine

If Brady beats the Giants in the SB

I will be convinced he’s the son of a Football God of Irony. Getting revenge on all the teams that beat him in the playoffs in one single season after losing three straight playoff games? 6th round pick turned into the best QB ever? Resurrects wash up old players and wins championships with players nobody wants? Losing to the Bills after going up 21-0 and than beating then the exact opposite way?
His career can so unbelievable sometimes.
