The NFL has changed. The rule changes make it too expensive to commit crimes against the QB. Literally, if you touch his head it is 15 yards. Coach studied these changes and reacted to them. I have been trying to figure out why the defensive backfield has so many guys who never played defense. I still don't really know, but, it is not a coincidence. Belichick doesn't cut 8 experienced DB's and go with Slater for the heck of it. He has a reason and it isn't just the salary cap. We need only look at the results.
The Patriots give up a ton of PASSING yards (rushing yards not so bad). They are designed to give up a lot of passing yards and get a lot of interceptions. 2010 and 2011 they have been at the top in INT's. Why? Brady scores a ton so the opponent has to score a lot too or lose. We know all this. It still, however, does not explain why the Pats have gone through 23 DB's since August and have allowed more passing yards than anyone 2010 and 2011 combined. It is the elephant in the room and Belichick is riding it.
Read Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" ...you know Bill has and a possibility arises. On pass defense Belichick lets the "enemy come to him." He is less of an attacker and more of a "sit backer." Now, is he this way because Ty Law and Rodney are on TV? Is the talent for the old "style" of defense not available to Bill? Are scrubs better equipped to handle soft zones and keep the enemy from getting a "big play?" Belichick uses the end zone as his 12th defender. He is softer than soft until red zone time when the field is so small 8 DB's becomes formidable. This method of play creates a TON of passing yards for the opponent, but, only an average number of points given up. I have to assume that the Pats give up fewer "big" pass plays. The Patriots are sacking a little more in 2011, but, they still create the games deadliest scenario...the pick. Would Bill trade 8 sacks (and the $ to pay Peppers) for 5 picks? How many QB crime penalties in pursuit of those "extra sacks?" Bill does not value sacks so let it go sack wanters.
Ok, so what does all this Sun Tzu anti sack former Kent State QB monster back stuff mean? Underwood playing nickel? The combined NFL starts for the Pats secondary is one of the lowest in the league....and by traditional measurements they suck except for the only measurement that matters...win percentage. Can you live with this statistical suck thing? Don't feel bad...it is intentional and successful...so successful that McCarthy and Peyton are doing the EXACT same thing. Does it help if you have a hall of fame QB? Duh. Belichick is the leader and the smart leaders follow him and they do nothing but win games and give up a zillion yards in the process.
