Patriots to Face Giants in Super Bowl XLVI

Well, in two weeks, the New England Patriots will be involved in either one of the biggest revenge stories in NFL history, or one of the biggest nightmares.

With the New York Giants defeating the San Francisco 49ers in overtime in the NFC Championship, it established Super Bowl XLVI as a rematch of the Super Bowl four years ago, when the 18-0 New England Patriots were upset by the underdog New York Giants.

The Patriots and the Giants will face off at 6:25 PM on February 5th, 2012 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The Patriots have been on a long road to recovery ever since that loss four years ago. On that day, Patriots fans learned the hard way that the Lombardi trophy is a lot more important than an unblemished regular season record.

The 2011 Patriots are far from perfect. They lost three games, the most recent coming at the hands of these New York Giants in week 9But now (well in two weeks), they will get the chance to pull off the ultimate revenge story as they will take on the Giants in Super Bowl XLVI.

In the coming days, we'll continue to break down the Patriots' win over the Ravens in the AFC Championship, as well as the upcoming Super Bowl match-up with the New York Giants. For now, feel free to use this post to continue to discuss the Patriots' win as well as your initial thoughts on the Giants game.

what scares me most

is that the proven way to beat the Patriots is a good pass rush, and the Giants definately have that

their secondary is almost as bad as ours tho. 4th worst in passing.

True

But i think Brady after his turd today will try look at the film fix his mistakes and attack the giants def. Ravens defense is as good as the giants if not better.

by lololol on Jan 22, 2012 11:26 PM EST up reply actions

Much better

They have a stout pass rush, but they don’t have Ed Reed or even Lardarius Webb in the secondary. If everyone wants to talk about the Patriots’ horrible “31st!” ranking, let’s not forget the Giants are ranked 27th by that same mark.

Not to mention

Pats were 15th points against, while the Giants were 25th points against.

Completely disregard

the first 14 games the Giants played on defense. I know, I know, how can you do that? Stick around for Willfass’s “Ask A Giants Fan” and IF you have an open mind, and understand a little more football than the average bear, you will see why when some fine individuals explain the details.

CONGRATULATIONS PATRIOTS and their fans. A great game today, a great win despite Brady not playing his best. In that, I would take much confidence. Because as we know, when TB is on his game he is REALLY hard to beat.

I am so looking forward to conversing with you boys over the next two weeks.

I know how it will go: There will be alot of you that I have great banter with. I call these people the level-headed-respect-your-opponent-we-both-belong-to-be-here-we-will-learn-about-each-others-team-it-will-be-a-good-game-crew. To the rest of you who say the Giants are: lucky-to-be-here-got-the-last-game-gifted-the-Packers-were-rusty-you-beat-nobody-good-crew……. We will have a much less enjoyable two weeks.

Also don't discount the Pats Defense, OR their running game. They are both greatly improved compared to much of the regular season.

;)

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

I saw BJGE today, and not only that, but how and when he was used and I was VERY impressed.

The defense too. I will not be thinking about any yardage based ranking, believe me. It’s how many friggin points you give up

i’m not sure you can deny they got “the breaks” their way tonight, but they played well enough to win. Pretty much shut down the Niners in the second half. They certainly haven’t “gotten lucky” to be where they are.

Just like Lee Evans not securing a TD or Cundif missing a kick.

I get it

Because of injuries, you “weren’t the same” on defense.

You could say the same about this unit, that just got Brandon Spikes and Patrick Chung back after seven weeks of inactivity. So if you wanted to cherry-pick defensive stats, let’s throw away the second half of the Giants game (you know, the one we didn’t give up any points until after Chung and Spikes left with injuries) and the seven weeks thereafter. Suddenly, we don’t look so bad either!

Don't agree with the Pats being favored at all.

Giants have a more talented team. Their style and players seem tailor-made to stop the Patriots. And that’s just their defense vs NE’s offense. They also have extremely favorable matchups on the other side of the ball.

For the Pats to win, I think it will have to be ugly. Sorta like today, but with a little less offensive fail.

Not confident about this one at all.

LAS VEGAS — Las Vegas casinos have made the New England Patriots favorites to win the Super Bowl thanks to their national following, a decade of winning and the playoff mystique of quarterback Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick.

In odds posted Sunday night by Cantor Gaming, the Patriots opened as three-point favorites over the New York Giants after New York beat San Francisco 20-17 in overtime in the NFC championship game, Race and Sports Director Mike Colbert said.

Guarantee that won't be the final line

With pedigree being the driving force now, bookies will be digging deeper and looking more closely at the matchups over the next two weeks, and that line will float closer to even, if not all the way to the Giants.

by The Burning Scheyer Jersey on Jan 23, 2012 12:00 AM EST up reply actions

Vegas favoring has nothing to do with the better team.

Has to do with guessing how people perceive the teams. Patriots have better record- oh, they must be the favorite. Typically, homefield advantage is a 3 point advantage in Vegas, so the Patriots are essentially regarded as having homefield advantage. 3 points is nothing- just a way to get people to bet.

The Pats can contain the run, they did so today. But against the pass with a playmaker like Cruz? /shudders

Especially coming from fans who get top see just about the best QB I have ever seen. And I am old enough to remember Montana, Marino, Elway, etc very well.

It's been a steady progression, agreed.

But so many people just focus on the negative. And not just with Eli. It’s an epidemic with sports fans.

Like Flacco. I have said, and will continue to say that he is an excellent QB. And he is young and still developing. His career arc is pointing up as he wins alot of games. Including playoff games.

Who wouldn’t want a developing QB who already has helped his team win 4 road playoff games?

2007: Lost in the superbowl to the Giants (TBD)
2008: Brady out for season (Pats beat Pollard’s team – AVENGED)
2009: Lost in the playoffs to Baltimore (AVENGED)

It is not the being talked about that bugs me. Really, it isn’t- Eli played well today- better than Brady on this day. It is more the fact that they are acting like the Giants are so much better than the Patriots. That bothers me- if Bellichick wanted bulletin board material for his team, I would suggest about 10 minutes of Gameday Final. I am not ruling out the Giants… but I will not rule out the Patriots either.

Further, this is not about whether or not Eli is good- which I will give. It is completely about the fact that you have two teams here… a 13-3 team and a 9-7 team, and the commentators are confusing the former and the latter. You do not win 15 games by not being good. That does not happen by accident- Please recall that the Giants are a pass interference call in the waning minutes of the Patriots game away from not being in these playoffs at all.

Don't know if 2006 can be considered avenged...

…if the Pats lose in front of Indy fans, it’s just going to be all the better for them.

I don’t think so. I think there is an irony to the hated Patriots playing Peyton’s little brother in the house that he built, but I don’t see it as retribution.

But then again, I think that things are pretty much even with the Colts- the Pats have had their wins against them, and vice versa. I think 2006 was the retribution.

Congrats!

Hey guys! Falcons fan here! I just wanted to say congrats for making it to the big game again. You guys deserve it for being dedicated fans (unlike my city down here). Brady is already one of the greatest ever and is further justifying his place at the top of the list of the greatest qbs to ever play. You guys and your team are a class act. I hope one day that Matt Ryan and the falcons can achieve this success. Best of luck in the super bowl and gooooo FALCONS!!!!

I always liked Ryan. Reminds me of Manning in a way.

Potential wise……

I like the falcons a lot. Hope they go further into the playoffs next year.

I so called this back in September!

about halfway down there is a discussion about superbowl picks.

I think this is good. The Giants are dangerous, but can make a lot of mistakes. If the Pats play a sound game offensively they will win.

the pats defense only gave up 7 or less points in 7 of those 9 games.

For the record

The explanation came from Michael Signora, NFL vice president of football communications, who told NFL.com and NFL Network why the game wasn’t stopped for a review.

“The ruling on the field of an incomplete pass was confirmed by the Instant Replay assistant, correctly, and as a result, there was no need to stop the game,” Signora wrote. “… The receiver did not get his second foot down in the end zone with possession, and as a result, it was an incomplete pass.”

PostGame Reaction

I was hoping the 49ers would have been able to curb their miscues to face us in the SB… but things don’t always work out that way. _;

The Giants won earlier this year, mostly due to their physicality and pressure against Brady. I noticed today that Green-Ellis had a lot of success against Baltimore, and NYG’s defense isn’t as good as Baltimore’s. In order for Brady to have any success against New York’s defense, they have to establish the run. If the Giants have to respect the run, Brady won’t get the same level of pass rush as opposed to him trying to pass 40 times, which means their typical high-powered offense will work the way it should unlike today’s game.

by Kris_Risk on Jan 23, 2012 12:43 AM EST reply actions

Although Baltimore has a better overall defense

NYG has a much better pass rush.

Also, Brady not making terrible decisions with the football would really help the offense – Would have 4 interceptions if 2 weren’t called back for penalties.

by tossin on Jan 23, 2012 1:18 AM EST up reply actions

It's not about deciding

“who has the better overall defense.” It’s about matchups.

I suggest letting this win sink in, check out some Giants stuff, let that digest, then comment.

But….in this instant EVERYTHING culture, I’m sure there won’t be much of this. :-)

I think he is saying to let it sink in, and then get some information on the giants since the poster he responded to said something he disagreed with. he has been classy here, so I dont think he meant any ill will. I think your just reading into it wrong.

Also, B Spikes:

Early in the fourth quarter, the Patriots second-year middle linebacker was looking to make a play on a handoff to Baltimore running back Ray Rice and got absolutely trucked by fullback Vonta Leach. Unfazed, Spikes picked himself off the ground and, on the very next play, made a spectacular one-handed interception, picking off a pass down the middle of the field from Joe Flacco at the Patriots 31.

"I just took my normal reads," said Spikes. "I was responsible for the tight end going vertical and I turned into the play and the ball was right there. I just wanted to make a play and I was able to. I was fortunate to hold on to it, it was a tough catch…

“It’s just great. As a man, you’re measured when you get knocked down, how you respond after you get knocked down. On that pick — actually the play before — Leach had done a great job — my respect to him, he knocked me on my butt. And the next play, I was able to make the play on the ball. It just felt great. You just gotta respond when you get knocked down on the ground.”

by furiousd on Jan 23, 2012 2:50 AM EST up reply actions

Meant no disrespect.

And I am confident in the Giants ability to beat any team. I also know that the Giants are not playing the Colts in Indy, it’s the Pats. A championship caliber team every year for the last decade who just had a great season and overcame alot of adversity.

I subscribe to coach Coughlin’s message this year of “respect all fear none.”

The thing about the Giants pass rush though

Is that they play with such good leverage and don’t completely sell out to rush the passer so are still decent in the run game too..

by j-ace on Jan 23, 2012 8:54 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know why Patriots fans are surprised at being small favorites

13-3 #1 seed against 9-7 #4 seed. I won’t be surprised if by game time its 50/50 though. I think you guys just have bad memories of ’07 and being the favorite lol.

Gonna be a tough game. Both have franchise QB’s, offensive weapons, and defenses that are playing well.

Offensively for the Patriots, Gronk’s injury could be a problem, high ankle sprain at least—-looked like from the replay. Two weeks aside that might make it difficult for him even if he does play.

Should be an interesting game, hope its as close as the ones today.

In the end, here’s a neutral observer pulling for the Giants. Hard to go against a team that knocked off the NFC’s top two seeds.

Thank you Broncos for such a fantastic year! Thank you for coming together as a TEAM! Thank you for giving us a reason to believe again! I love you guys!!!

by Bronco Mike on Jan 23, 2012 12:57 AM EST reply actions

Thanks, Bronco Mike

Regarding Gronkowski’s injury, he did return to the game after being in the locker room for only three minutes of game time. A sprain indeed, but it’s looking like a relatively minor one by the looks of it. Thank God for the bye to try to get everyone healthy (again).

It was a pleasure interacting with MHR twice this year and I’m sure we’ll be seeing much, much more of the Broncos in the coming seasons.

Bad memories indeed

Even though only 7 players from 2007 are still on the team, they need to replay video again and again from that Superbowl:

- Brady being cocky about scoring more than 17 points
- Tyree catch
- OL line just getting dominated all game
- 4th and 11

by tossin on Jan 23, 2012 1:20 AM EST up reply actions

Time to exorcise some demons....

- Brady- please keep your mouth shut- I loved you today for admitting that you sucked today- please stay humble and quiet for the next two weeks.
- I am trying to remind myself that all of the significant players in that catch other than Eli will only be at the Super Bowl if they buy tickets. (I also regret to inform you that a new uni has not aided Asante’s tackling skills).
- This one makes me shudder a little- some of the same players are still around.
- BB- if this choice comes up again, for the love of God kick a field goal!

Definitely- I live just south of Philly, so I get to see a lot of Giants games (not just the two against the Eagles, but a lot of times they will be on if the game is a different time from the Eagles), so I have had the chance to watch Eli develop. He is much more poised now than he was before and not only has the raw talent, but makes good decisions- he isn’t running 20 yards backwards on a sack anymore, or making so many bad throws.,He is coming into his own as an elite qb- one that I respect on the same level I respect his brother.

It's all been coming together

And again, I appreciate the kudos for my favorite player, especially from a Brady fan and I mean that sincerely.

The biggest difference this year is his footwork. That has brought together so many of the already great attributes that Eli has.

Eli is a very good qb combined with great receivers

and yes as most here will agree, magic feet. When Vince gets his paws on that jersey, for the love of god pull him down. I have a feeling this game will play out almost exactly like 07 with one difference its going to be the defense of NE that gets the win on a last min sack
