Super Rematch for all the Lombardis: Ask a Giants Fan
Hello Pats fans! Looks like it's deja vu all over again.
Rather than repeat what's been and will be ramrodded over and over again by the media, let's discuss some things that will really matter! Like holy bleep what a performance by Wilfork! And isn't it nice to have clutch kickers? And also the merits of nicknames (Elite Eli or Tom Terrific?).
Just kidding on the last one.
I have a single stat/tidbit for Superbowl Sunday: In all three of the Giants' Super Bowl wins, Bill Belichick has been involved somehow.
Who's ready for the Superbowl??
The views expressed in these FanPosts are not necessarily those of the writers or SBNation.

I'll be ready for the SB when Gronk is.
Questions:
1) Your defense was worse than the Ravens in the regular season. What happened?
2) In hindsight, how in the world did you lose twice to the Redskins?
3) Was your D-line at full strength in our first meeting this year?
4) How much respect/disrespect do you have for our front seven?
Lakers and Patriots forever.
Same thing that happened to your D is what happened to ours
They got healthy and guys started playing together as a team not indviduals.
In hindsight I have no clue how the hell we got swept by the freakin Skins, man is that embarrassing
D line was close to full strength the first time, but we are healthier now.
Being that your HC was our DC I wouldn’t underestimate the Pat’s D if Bill was using a HS teams front 7, I’m expecting your D to play well.
by Late for Dinner on Jan 25, 2012 4:01 PM EST up reply actions
Just to add...
The back seven on D has been pretty much healthy all year except for losing LB Michael Boley for 2 games, including @ SF. That hurt us in coverage and he was making the defensive calls since our MLB went on IR in preseason. We have alot of rookies at LB so when Boley went out they signed a familiar face in #93 Chase Blackburn who was cut in preseason this year. He has been a real shot of energy and stability.
The Dline is finally healthy, this is the first biggest part of the defensive improvement. The second happened before the Jet game. The players in the secondary lobbied for change with our DC and got it. All year we were watching big plays beat us, and intermediate routes were killing us as well.
Our DC had a group of veteran DB’s confused as hell with way too many coverage audibles and a complicated zone scheme. Guys were constantly blowing assignments and looking at each other like, “I thought you had him?” The players got the change they asked for (took long enough) and we are seeing great play in the secondary.
Respect for your front seven for me is mediocre. But I think that is a product of me not seeing you guys enough as much as anything.
The truth. The REAL voice of reason
when it comes against the run, our front seven is strong.
pass rushing is slightly inconsistent, but when they are on, they can pass rush as well as most teams in the NFL.
Against the pass, our back 8 (including LBs) are generally well in coverage. Both man to man and zone.
I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP
How do you think the Pats
handle the Giants top three receivers?
I know BB is very good at taking away a teams best plays, wether it be run or pass, forcing other plays or players to be successful. How does he handle our threats?
Also, the Giants commit to the run. The production is not the key aspect of the success. Because we commit to the run, teams must defend it. This is where we often defenses with the pass. If you guys put 6 in the box, we will run it, and Bradshaw and/or Jacobs will avg. 4+ yards. If you put 8 in the box, the avg will go down to below 3 ypc.
However, when there is 8 in the box, that’s when Eli will hit his receivers.
I’m anticipating some difficulty for the Pats D in this sense.
The truth. The REAL voice of reason
Play the bend but don't break scheme.
Stay back, make sure the receivers are at least in front of you, make them earn their yards. If you can get a 3 and out thats great. Just let the front 7 pass rush (probably 4-5 guys will rush), and keep your man in front, and let the safeties help protect the deep ball.
If you guys get into the redzone, stiffen up, and take advantage of the short field. Tryt to let the giants score fieldgoals.
And don’t underestimate our run defense. We stopped Rice pretty handily. If you response is something along the lines of “but the Ravens are one dimensional.” Not really. They run the ball a lot yeah, but they have a capable passing game, and with the likes of Boldin and Smith you would think they would have no problem against our “weak secondary.” Besides, I don’t think they stacked the box with 8 that much at all.
What I’m trying to say is, I am pretty confident in our run defense. Our front seven is extremely tough, and they have very good discipline. I don’t want to say that you guys have no chance running the ball. I’m only saying don’t “expect” to have good success against our front seven. Even without spikes, we boasted a top 10 running defense in the regular season I believe. With spikes, they improve in that department dramatically, especially now that they are playing in their natural 3-4 formation.
I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP
I see.
About the running game…
The Giants focus on offense is not the running game, it is only to supliment the pass game. We go into a game with a strategy of run COMMITMENT, not run dominance. The Giants do their damage through the air. If the run works, as it did during the Dallas and Falcon game then we will use it more, obviously.
But the idea for us is to use the run to set up the pass. And after facing arguably the best defense in the league last week, and also the best run defense, all other defenses don’t seem as intimidating.
Did you see those 49ers? They are impressive, and intimidating. They are the best defense not to make the SB that I can ever recall. If Ted Ginn JR was returning punts, we might not be here.
I would expect you to be confident in your run defense, I hear what you are saying, and I saw how they limited RIce last week, it was impressive.
The truth. The REAL voice of reason
Niners are aawesome on defense. But there main problem was offense obviously.
It was a great defensive battle. In the end, Eli made most of the chances he got to have the ball than alex smith did.
I get what you mean about the running game. Our offense is sort of like that as well.
Obviously the pats have a weaker defense, but I believe they have much better synergy on both sides of the ball. What I mean is, is that our defense can make enough stops to give Brady and the offense the ball enough times to score and get a lead. They don’t play lights out like the niners not only because the niners have better personnel, but because they win games based on the defense. The pats win based on the offense, while the defense just does enough to get the job done. If you know what I was trying to say….. meh..
I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP
I totally know what you are saying.
When you mentioned synergy, it clicked, that is what I see from the Pats, they play very well as a team (understatement). It also made ,e think of the Giants defense. When guys point to this area not being great, or that player being a vulnerability, it just doesn’t make sense to me because they play amazing TEAM defense.
The truth. The REAL voice of reason
Yep. The Giants defense is better than its given credit for.
I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP
3 Things that will be different than in Week 9
1) Patriots run offense will be more involved
2) Giants O at full strength
3) Patriots D at full strength

But without him, we switch from 4-3 to 3-4 and get pressure with limebackers.

Good move
They’re certainly not afraid of admitting a mistake, or a highly publicized experiment-gone-bad, and I’m glad of that. Remember too, they shipped him out after the Giants game when he just stood there on the goal line instead of doing his job.
Keep the faith!
10-0 without Haynesworth,
while Bucs have gone 0-8 with Haynesworth.
It is what it is
Too bad he didn't go to the Giants.
Just sayin’.

Another lesser thing people don't seem to notice
Haynesworth went to Tampa Bay. Either the next game or the game after, they played the Texans and he hurt Schaub.
With Schaub out, Yates played admirably but is definitely a big downgrade. If you guys didn’t cut haynesworth, Perhaps the Texans win some more games with a good passing game, possibly even enough for the number 1, but probably definitely for the 2 seed, setting up a Patriots Texans game in the Championship.
Belichick’s such a genius he was able to knock out competition just by cutting someone!

Was he the one who hurt Shaub? Go figure.
The plot lines in the NFL are better than in any movie. You can’t make this stuff up.

Do you see the Pats trying to do what the Jets did to us last year and rush 3-4 and flood the zone or apply constant pressure like the Niners on Sunday to try and slow down this vertical attack the Giants bring? My big concern is Victor Cruz, Eli seems to go to him on most critical downs.

For the most part
Or what I hope for the most part, is we’ll stick with a four man rush and play man to man. Occassionally we’ll have Blitzers come, and mix in some zone, but it’s all up to the front four. They need to get pressure.

Who wil cover who?
Ravens put a LB and a S over the top on Gronk
Webb on Welker
bracketed Hernandez with a CB and a S over the top
Put a CB on Branch.
Who plays Welker? Branch? Ocho/Slater/Underwood/Edelman?
Gronkowski?
Hernandez?
I’m trying to get a sense for how your D covers. The Ravens had it easy because they have Reed and Webb plus Pollard who all played very good man coverage. Not to mention Lewis.

Well Webster will cover one side
and Ross the other, for most, if not the whole game.
Last week they had Rolle cover Davis, which is a huge mismatch and I hope they limit the times Rolle covers tight ends this week.
Should be a combination of Boley and Williams in on the tight ends.
That’s my best guess anyways

Rolle really only got burnt once
not saying he can definitely hold him down all game. But even the play he got toasted, he really just got caught peeking in the backfield.
I got banned from Jests Blog for saying Chad Henne has better stats than Mark Sanchez. And they think they're the big brothers in this town? LMAO try again little sisters!
Let's Go Giants!!!!
It depends on where your TE's lineup
If they are on the line, Id imagine its LB underneath and S over the top.
Boley and Williams are two LBer’s that are decent/good in coverage for us.
If you send a TE out wide, We sent Kenny Phillips to trail in man coverage and had Webster over the top.
Rolle has covered slot receivers at time.
TEs need the most attention
The WRs don’t scare me at all. Not even Welker. He could end up with 16 rec for 130 yds and it really, probably wouldn’t hurt us too much.

they are much better at run blocking, Will....remember the old days where we got 29 rushing yards a game?
Our pass blocking has become worse (though still OK)….That’s due to David Diehl coming in to LT, and Kevin Boothe at LG instead of our matchup vs Pats which was Beatty at LT and Diehl at G.

I remember when Ihedigbo started for the first time vs. Jets
my first thought was “wow, he’s such a leap in talent from Sergio Brown!”
It is what it is
Eli has had to overcome
inconsistent lineplay all year. While the line as a whole is not great, they are certainly not terrible, but Eli is probably the best in the league right now at sensing the rush and where it is coming from in time, then finding the right spot to get a lane to throw in. In addition, he has been excellent at being able to throw the ball accurately even when his feet are not set or his body is in an awkward position.
This is where he has elevated his game tremendously this year, and it was neccessary given the Oline struggles.
The truth. The REAL voice of reason
Just a couple questions. :P
Tell me about the type of offense you run? The different packages, and such. How often do you guys run? When you do run the ball, who is usually carrying the ball, and what are his strengths and weaknesses? The other guy who runs?
When you do pass the ball, who is usually Eli’s favorite targets? Does he normally throw downfield, medium, checkdown, or all of the above? What are his tendencies, and who is he most comfortable with? What is the best way to attack Eli Manning (according to profootballfocus he is rated the #1 QB in terms of accuracy when pressured at 71%… Yeah..)? Tell me about your OL and their strengths and weaknesses.
On defense, tell me about your front seven, and players weaknesses and strengths. Same with the secondary. Where do you see QBs mostly completing the throws against you guys? Deep, Middle, underneath, all the above? What type of WRs and/or TEs (yes I must include this as this IS a factor on Sunday) does the defense normally have issues with? Does your DC usually blitz his guys, or let the front 4 pass rush the QB?
I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP
i was posting this over at BBV but then u took it down .
Sucks for me because I’m not sure how to copy n paste on my phone.
In short fear the strip. Giants have been goin hard after the ball this playoffs.
2 things on D. One the run D was weak all yr. Other then the running QB ( Smith , Sanchez,Rodgers) padding the stats they have been pretty stout the past 5 weeks.
2nd is the slot . We lost both slot corners . Ross covered Welker in our last SB meeting as a rookie (and will prob. Again.
)it didn’t go so well for us.
Expect for a lot of 2 LB 3 Safety looks from our D as well .P fewell has more faith in the secondary do don’t expect a ton of dime looks.
I may not be the most noble of men but in a town of lepers, im the one with the most fingers.

LOL this is a "couple questions," Jack? Heh, I'll try my best!
The type of offense we run is quite simple. A pass heavy offense that runs 3 WR sets and 2 WR/2RB sets. We run just enough to keep the opposing pass rush at bay. Eli is probably one of the best play action pass QBs in the league, so he uses the run to set that up. We typically live and die by the big play. None of that west coast offense stuff, just run, run, medium pass, run, run, deep post sort of thing.
When we run, the main man is Ahmad Bradshaw. He’s extremely shifty. Not a burner like Chris Johnson, but one of the faster backs in the league. He’s small, so he’ll be able to find holes easier than others. His weakness is probably his vision. He’s not very decisive, so you can catch him in the backfield a lot of the time. PFF ranked him as one of the most elusive backs in the NFL, so he’s going to make people miss. Gang tackle him and you’ll be fine. The other guy is Brandon Jacobs. He’s pretty easy to analyze. 264 lbs. Good when he goes North-South, but he loves going laterally, and then gets taken down by the ankles every time.
Eli’s favorite targets are both Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz. He doesn’t care who, and will focus on whoever isn’t getting double teamed. Both are dangerous as all hell, and their biggest weapon is YAC…don’t let them get behind you and be sure to wrap up on your tackles. He loves throwing downfield, and lead the league in 40+ yard completions. He is Tom Brady-esque in terms of escaping pressure…he looks like a wounded duck running around, but he’s suprisingly agile stepping up and around in the pocket to avoid pressure. He’s great at finding the open receiver under pressure, and part of it is keeping his eyes down the field till the very last moment.
Our OL sucks. Particularly our two tackles. Your edge rushers should have the advantage. David Baas is our C and he’s decent at pass protection, but doesn’t get any push up front. Wilfork should take advantage of that. Snee was an all-pro last year, but he’s had a down year. But he’s still pretty good. Mitch Petrus/Kevin Boothe will be our LGs. They are good run blockers, but nothing special.
I’ll address the defense a little later, I’m pooped whew haha

to me, he's better than Brady in terms of mobility
he sneaks sometimes for more than 10 yards. I think Brady’s typical sneak is 3.
Lakers and Patriots forever.
Brady does escape a lot of would-be sacks though
as does the wily Eli, especially on 4th downs for crying out loud.

True, but that's Brady just figuring out where to move.
There are as many times when Brady moves right into a sack.
There are many times where I get frustrated watching Brady stand with at least 6 yards of open space and wait for a receiver. I live in Carolina and watch a lot of Cam Newton so I guess I’m a bit spoiled.

What happens if Al Queda kidnap Eli Manning and Cruz and take them to their home base in Langley for duration of the game ?
As optional extended strategy, they could use mind control technology on Eli and Cruz so they can strap explosives on them and have them walk back ready to blow up Giants locker room before game. Possible impacts will be Giant roster on IR along with Eli and Cruz reputations demolished by being tagged as suicide bombers.
Another option will be the kidnappers let them go before game time and let them ftive back in their own cars. Unbeknownst to Eli and Cruz, the rear trunk will be loaded with explosives that will detonate when Giant players come to greet them. Eli and Cruz reputations will be demolished by being tagged as suicide bombers for Al Queda.
Anything to counter these ?

JPP will use his octopus arms to push his body away from the explosion
then proceed to commandeer the offense, throwing passes to himself(since his arms are so long he can easily stretch them 30-40 yards downfield) and pull off scoring drives in each quarter. and if that doesn’t work: then enter Rhett Bomar.
