NFC Wild Card Game Thread: Falcons (#5) at Giants (#4)

Atlanta Falcons (#5) at New York Giants (#4)

Sunday, January 8th, 2012 | 4:15 PM ET | TV: FOX

Falcons Coverage: The Falcoholic

Giants Coverage: Big Blue View

Use this post as the official game thread for the second NFC wild card match-up, scheduled to kick off at 1:00 PM ET this afternoon. The game features the visiting Atlanta Falcons, who finished the regular season 10-6 and earned the 5th seed in the wildcard and the 4th seed New York Giants, who won the NFC East division at 9-7.

While most prognosticators are predicting the Giants to win this one, I'm going to go with the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons are 0-2 in the playoffs in the Mike Smith / Matt Ryan era, and I think they will come out today with a sense of desperation. They have really been on a roll lately, and I think the Giants have just been too inconsistent this year to know what to expect. This is the same Giants team, that with a chance to take a dominating lead in the division, were killed by the 5-11 Redskins just a couple of weeks ago. Greg's Prediction: Falcons 24 Giants 20

By the early look of things

these teams are not close to being in the same class as Saints, Packers or even Lions. We might have known this already but it has been emphasized early on although admittedly it’s still very early.

Wait. After a safety

The ball gets kicked from the 20 instead of the 35? Really? Or was there an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty there, too?

I want whoever in NFC can beat New Orleans to win

New Orleans are like the Borg. They will destroy and assimilate the opposition.

I expect GB to beat ATL or NYG.

I think the NYG would play better against GB.

So it’s moot whoever wins this game. I think GB has some chance to stop NO.

I will root for SF next week. Maybe they can stop the Borg.

by prioris on Jan 8, 2012 2:29 PM EST reply actions

If Patriots play NO, they will probably need to score 60 points. Maybe 70.

I remember a very long time ago in superbowl XX, it was

Chicago 46 Patriots 10 … Patriots were demolished in that game

by prioris on Jan 8, 2012 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

They don't need to score 70

They just need to CREATE TURNOVERS. The score of their last game was 45 to 28. The Saints allowed 28 pts, but they gave it to Drew Brees to extra times and dropped two ints that’s potentially a 28 point difference in a game. You switch that around, the Lions don’t carelessly turn the ball over twice and capitalize on the bad throws Drew Brees makes, they win that game.

Ok herse a couple things

First, I totally agree with going for it on 4th down. If you can’t get less then a yard, you don’t deserve to play in the NFL, let alone be in the playoffs.

Now beyond that, You can’t just have your QB try to push his way forward. Even if you have the best O-line in football, thats not a smart move. Have him jump like Brees did, or give him a chance to see if he wants to run to the outside. Just barreling forward, though, is stupid.

And secondly, the Giants win in GB next week. 100% chance.

Also

I’m starting to hate the sports media more and more. “The Giants are looking like they’re going on another one of those runs like they did in 2007!” Based on what? That they won one playoff game against a team that shot itself in the foot in a thousand different ways?

Not sure why so many folks here actually wanted the Giants to lose, only to see GB demolish

more that BB isn’t messing up the draft with his picks. So many people get pissed when we miss on a player, I think people assume just because we draft them they are going to be great. People forget that other teams whiff big on picks at times also.
