NFC Wild Card Game Thread: Falcons (#5) at Giants (#4)
Atlanta Falcons (#5) at New York Giants (#4)
Sunday, January 8th, 2012 | 4:15 PM ET | TV: FOX
Falcons Coverage: The Falcoholic
Giants Coverage: Big Blue View
Use this post as the official game thread for the second NFC wild card match-up, scheduled to kick off at 1:00 PM ET this afternoon. The game features the visiting Atlanta Falcons, who finished the regular season 10-6 and earned the 5th seed in the wildcard and the 4th seed New York Giants, who won the NFC East division at 9-7.
While most prognosticators are predicting the Giants to win this one, I'm going to go with the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons are 0-2 in the playoffs in the Mike Smith / Matt Ryan era, and I think they will come out today with a sense of desperation. They have really been on a roll lately, and I think the Giants have just been too inconsistent this year to know what to expect. This is the same Giants team, that with a chance to take a dominating lead in the division, were killed by the 5-11 Redskins just a couple of weeks ago. Greg's Prediction: Falcons 24 Giants 20

The Ryan Brothers: Two brother's who never played a down as an NFL player, Yet feel the need to trash talk like they are in the Hall Of Fame
By the early look of things
these teams are not close to being in the same class as Saints, Packers or even Lions. We might have known this already but it has been emphasized early on although admittedly it’s still very early.

They have a total of 6 yards.
Granted, that last drive wiped out the two before it. . . .

They'll never be able to make up that yawning chasm!
Two whole points!
Fenway: "An alternate and better universe, disguised as a ballpark." --Thomas Boswell
Wait. After a safety
The ball gets kicked from the 20 instead of the 35? Really? Or was there an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty there, too?
Fenway: "An alternate and better universe, disguised as a ballpark." --Thomas Boswell
Wow. Talk about a huge penalty.
The opposing team not only gets points, they get the ball, and a shorter field for their next drive? Yikes.
Fenway: "An alternate and better universe, disguised as a ballpark." --Thomas Boswell
If only that James Sanders fellow played for the Patriots.
It is what it is
I want Giants to win. I want a team that can scare or potentially beat the Pack to advance.
Falcons are owned by the Pack.
Depth is great. Right up until you need it!!

I want whoever in NFC can beat New Orleans to win
New Orleans are like the Borg. They will destroy and assimilate the opposition.
I expect GB to beat ATL or NYG.
I think the NYG would play better against GB.
So it’s moot whoever wins this game. I think GB has some chance to stop NO.
I will root for SF next week. Maybe they can stop the Borg.
If Patriots play NO, they will probably need to score 60 points. Maybe 70.
I remember a very long time ago in superbowl XX, it was
Chicago 46 Patriots 10 … Patriots were demolished in that game
They don't need to score 70
They just need to CREATE TURNOVERS. The score of their last game was 45 to 28. The Saints allowed 28 pts, but they gave it to Drew Brees to extra times and dropped two ints that’s potentially a 28 point difference in a game. You switch that around, the Lions don’t carelessly turn the ball over twice and capitalize on the bad throws Drew Brees makes, they win that game.
Rex Ryan: "There’s no way that we’re looking to replace Mark Sanchez"
Patriots Nation: "Thank God"
Giants Fans: "FOUR MORE YEARS!! FOUR MORE YEARS!!"
In Green Bay, NO will be dismantled in inclimant weather. They are not scary at all outside
their dome. Add an even greater O to defend, along with the best QB in the league (Brees is 2nd), Aaron Rodgers, and GB will smash them.
Depth is great. Right up until you need it!!
Only 2 pts by Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons
And they are an offensive based team? Matt Ryan seems more of a game manager than a field general. They should be a defensive based team and let Matty Ice win games down the stretch than just outgun guys
Rex Ryan: "There’s no way that we’re looking to replace Mark Sanchez"
Patriots Nation: "Thank God"
Giants Fans: "FOUR MORE YEARS!! FOUR MORE YEARS!!"
Julio Jones was that last piece that makes them a Superbowl team
ATL is now a powerhouse offense
LOL
You need an Elite QB
to be a powerhouse offense and that’s painfully evident when you see them play the saints

Two ATL drives stalled just outside of the red zone
Looking for TD’s instead of FG’s makes it a 10-2 game instead of a 10-8 game.

What in the world is Mike Smith
doing, he’s making terrible call after terrible call
and that last play they set up at 4th and inches was plain stupid. No back so it was completely obvious Ryan was going to try and sneak it

Ok herse a couple things
First, I totally agree with going for it on 4th down. If you can’t get less then a yard, you don’t deserve to play in the NFL, let alone be in the playoffs.
Now beyond that, You can’t just have your QB try to push his way forward. Even if you have the best O-line in football, thats not a smart move. Have him jump like Brees did, or give him a chance to see if he wants to run to the outside. Just barreling forward, though, is stupid.
And secondly, the Giants win in GB next week. 100% chance.

Also
I’m starting to hate the sports media more and more. “The Giants are looking like they’re going on another one of those runs like they did in 2007!” Based on what? That they won one playoff game against a team that shot itself in the foot in a thousand different ways?

And it kinda sucks because now the NFC team I can cheer for is
the 49ers. If the Giants win another SB, the media will crown Eli Manning the greatest QB in history. If the Saints/Packers win, they’ll crown em the greatest dynasty in history.

Not sure why so many folks here actually wanted the Giants to lose, only to see GB demolish
the Falcons yet again. And potentially move past the NFCCG and smash us! I would much rather a Giants/49ers NFCCG for our sakes. I love Brady in all, but he may look average when on the field with Brees/Rodgers.
Depth is great. Right up until you need it!!
To hell with a sexy SB matchup like NO/NE or NE/GB. I want it easy as possible dammit.

So do i, but i want the Pack to lose for our sakes.
And oddly enough i think the Saints would be a tougher match-up for us than the Pack. Graham and Sproles scare me.

To say nothing of Pierre Thomas!
That guy was breathing fire last night! NO’s running game looks a lot more impressive than Green Bay’s.
And I'd rather see the Falcons beat the Packers then the Giants beat the Packers.

No he cares too much about getting "value" i.e picks on defense that suck!!

Sometimes I think
that people forget that a lot of the draft is projection. Teams frequently whiff on picks. We hit on players more often than not.
the defense hasn't hit lately.
But don’t forget we also drafted Wilfork, Mayo, Chung, Spikes, McCourty, Cunningham. We have missed on Whilite/Butler/Wheatly but on defense who else have we messed up on recently?
Well i love Mcc but the verdict is still out on him. And you may wanna leave
Cunningham out of the convo. He may not be Patriot next year.
Depth is great. Right up until you need it!!

My point is
more that BB isn’t messing up the draft with his picks. So many people get pissed when we miss on a player, I think people assume just because we draft them they are going to be great. People forget that other teams whiff big on picks at times also.
You are correct. But i like u and many others just care about our team
Depth is great. Right up until you need it!!
I got like that last year and the year before(draft time that is)
I just give up and support the picks. I agree though, we miss alot of gret playmakers when we slide around the draft board.
