Denver Upsets Pittsburgh in OT; Patriots to Host Broncos in Divisional Playoffs

This evening, the Denver Broncos upset the Pittsburgh Steelers 29-23 in dramatic fashion: Tim Tebow connected with receiver Demaryius Thomas for an 80 yard touchdown on the first play of overtime for the kill.

I'll be the first to admit, although I was rooting for Denver, I didn't give them as much of a chance in this one as I should have, and they proved me wrong. Now, they will get to travel to Foxboro on Saturday to take on the 13-3, #1 seed New England Patriots.

The game will take place at 8:00 PM ET on Saturday, January 14th.

In the first match-up between the Broncos and Patriots, in week 15, the Patriots won in dominating fashion, overcoming a slow start to snag a 41-23 victory. But, that doesn't mean the Patriots can overlook the Broncos in any way. The Broncos gave them a lot of trouble early on in week 15, and as they showed against the Steelers tonight, they are a resilient bunch that can hang with the best that the NFL has to offer.

Of course, we're going to go into all kinds of detail on the Broncos / Patriots match-up throughout this week, but for now, feel free to leave your initial thoughts on the upcoming game and what you think of the Broncos as an opponent.

I hate the Steelers, love Tebow, and regardless of today’s outcome, we are playing the inferior of the two teams next week

So, is anyone afraid after watching that?

Terrible play from both sides. As bad as the Patriots’ defense can be, at least the play calling isn’t quite so suspect as that.

Steelers O-Line

Actually protected Ben pretty well. You can argue the sacks they did get were all coverage based. I’d put the Patriots O-Line several notches above the Steelers’, moreso if Logan Mankins is set for a return.

Tebow and the Broncos are neither. So lets beat them by at least 18 like we did last time.

Well, while I’m glad the Steelers aren’t going to get a chance for a 3rd ring in 6 years, Tebowmania is mind-numbingly stupid. The Pats better take care of business next week.

The running game is crucial

Patriots have to run to ball well early to stay on the field. Poor starts can’t happen in January. Run well early and Tom will do the rest. Call me crazy, but I also feel that the Broncos will have a let down after this win.

I think it didin't matter who we played

but I do believe Denver is a more favorable matchup. Despite Tebow’s big plays today, they do not have the offensive firepower to match us. I am glad that those big plays happened today, because I think it makes it harder to happen next week. Credit to the Broncos, they played a tough game, and came through in the clutch, but I do like our chances.

if Pat’s can contain run, brady can throw more TDs than Tebow

by prioris on Jan 8, 2012 8:46 PM EST up reply actions

This.

To me, it seemed like they played an incredibly naive gameplan. They treated Tebow like he literally couldn’t throw the ball, and was just a glorified running back. I think there were times I could count 9 guys in the box. Now, Tebow does not have the best arm, and he did land a lot of passes yesterday that he otherwise wouldn’t 90% of the time, but he’s still a damn quarterback, and there are still SOME pass plays in their playbook. It seemed to me like the Steelers went in overly confident that Tebow wouldn’t be able to complete passes no matter what, and when it started happening, they didn’t believe it.

by nbradley07 on Jan 9, 2012 8:07 AM EST up reply actions

And the key here being...

they never really adjusted. They seemed to do a better job in the second half—maybe more attributed to Denver trying to kill some clock and establish a power running game—but that 80-yard TD in OT was the type of play that killed them multiple times, all game. Pull the safety wayyy up and anticipate a run. Fox was content to let Tebow toss the rock all day.

I’m sure many of us at PP could have completed a few of those. Deep coverage was nonexistent. I’m shocked that the Steelers in all of their defending AFC champion glory had such a sophomoric game plan with the inability to adjust and change.

It almost seems like the best way to deal with Tebow is what the Patriots excel at—prevent the big play, wait for the QB to screw up. As much as Tebow impressed me yesterday, he also had a few “huh?” passes that were just ridiculously off their mark.

True

But the common theme on both of those teams there is stifling defensive play. Denver’s defense is impressive in bursts, but never consistently. If we can neutralize their pass rush, I like our chances with the TEs.

This was the matchup I wanted the least

The broncos believe they can win no matter what, they annihilated the ne defense for a quarter before making some dumb, but unlikely to be repeated mistakes, and they have a legitimately good defense that can pressure Brady without blitzing too much. Plus, while I would hope they learned their lesson, the team was clearly overconfident last year after their beatdown of the jets. Id rather not see a repeat.

Ultimately, if this team was as bloodless and ruthless as the 2004 or 07 ones, I wouldnt be worried, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t pretty concerned about a young team playing without the momentum, possibly starting slow, and being unable to catch up without some Denver turnovers.

That said, I second the mhr compliments, a very good blog.

This team has balls.

If there’s one thing I DON’T worry about with this team, it’s mental toughness. I think they’ve proven through consistent performance that they never give up, never stop fighting, and never get too down on themselves. I would not worry at all about them pulling a no-show like in 2009 or turtling like they did at times last year in the divisional round.

Much less likely to have an offensive player injured against the Broncos. Every week Harrison and company lay out a receiver or a quarterback. Happened again today.

I think 4 starters and 2 subs. Not bad, Thomas, Tebow, Decker, D. J. Williams, the starting center, back up center and cb who is on Ir, but looked good when healthy. His draft was a lot better than he’s given credit for.

It was more so the cover up of the taping than the taping itself.

But I really think they were looking for an excuse to fire him. Denver is a place where media relations matter. Belichick’s style, which McD for the most part adopted, doesn’t fly there. He quickly became an enigma in his own city, and he didn’t have the Ws to point to in his own defense. I do think he would have had success eventually, since the team he essentially built is now winning in the playoffs, but I’m not sure the terse and prickly act would have gone over well in the long-term, regardless of wins, in Denver.

Even though we won in Denver...

It seems like home field advantage will play a large role in this upcoming game. Much more so than if we had played the Steelers. Tebow was throwing it pretty well today though, so I’m definitely not counting them out yet. We’ve seen the Pats D make plenty of non-elite QBs look like Peyton Manning in his prime after all.

Pats offense, please please don’t turn the ball over. Pats defense, hopefully you manage to start this game decently well and just keep working to do your jobs.

Steelers-Broncos was the best game by far all weekend

But I have to say I while I was rooting for the Broncos (because I can’t stand the Steelers, don’t care about their “Stairway to Seven” quest, and did NOT want to hear about Big Ben the ‘warrior’ all week long) I realized early on that playing the Steelers wouldn’t be so bad at all.

Keep the faith!

by Marima on Jan 8, 2012 10:53 PM EST reply actions

I was thinking the same.

When the Steelers tied it up, I was kind of hoping they’d pull it off. They are absolutely riddled with injuries, and they would be pretty emotionally drained from the high-stakes, down-to-the-wire game. Ben played well below his potential and the front seven were consistently owned by the Broncos’ OL. Meanwhile, Tebow played probably as well as he possibly could, and the Broncos’ D fought ravenously. I was kind of hoping for the downward trending team, but I still think the Broncos are fatally flawed.

Weird History Lol Welcome Back JMD
McDaniels attended John Carroll University, where he played football, primarily as a wide receiver, from 1995 to 1998. Though a quarterback in high school, he was beaten at that position at John Carroll by Nick Caserio, who joined the Patriots staff in 2001 (the same year as McDaniels). His other teammates included London Fletcher, now a linebacker for the Washington Redskins, and Brian Polian, the special teams coach at Stanford.

Lets remember that this time around, the Pats know how to defend the option. They

made great 2nd half adjustments and shut that scheme down. Also for this game, they have Chung and Spikes who should/will assist the run defense. Branch will also be back for this game. Neither of those 3 guys were their in the 1st game this season. Just a thought!
