Welcome the the new NFL. Touch the QB? Get 60 days in the ACI. Blitz the QB? Sure! Just don't commit more than 4 guys to the rush. If you look at the stats, the best bet is to keep the QB in the pocket and drop 7 or 8 guys. They did a study on Flacco...he's more effective when flushed. His completion % is higher and he throws fewer picks. Pats elected to keep him in the pocket...it worked perfectly as they got three INT's....they what? Oh...never mind.
Statistically, playing for the INT is better than playing for the sack. Don't believe me? Need fantasy sacks? Play the "under."
Now what does all this mean? We live in a spread offense world. Receivers everywhere, nickel backs everywhere. Linebackers in coverage. Wilfork had two picks last year. Belichick has drafted 16 DB's in the last 5 years. Folks, this is a trend and it is a big one. Now what?
Hand off like your life depended on it.
Do power sweeps, off tackles, counters, draws, power I's, add tight ends, suck'em in, stretche'm out...you know? High school. Remember how your QB sucked so coach had to run the ball 95% of the time? This is called bucking the trend and the Bills got bucked yesterday now didn't they?
Josh, former QB coach, returns to Foxboro to set the passing world on fire with HOF Tom Terrific and as of today the New England Patriots lead the league in rushing first downs? WTF?! Gotta be a blip...uh oh...they're second in the NFL in rushes? Wait a second how about TD's. Tommy must have thrown for..no. They are second in in the league in rushing TDs.
Ok, so next week's opponent, the Broncos, are looking at the films and make the following conclusion.
"Coach Fox? We have a killer plan for the Patriots. We are going to take away their league leading running game and make Tom Brady beat us...."
