Reggie Wayne willing to play with the Pats....

Just read that Reggie Wayne would be open to playing with the Patriots. I know BB is high on him and says he is one of the hardest receivers to play against. What do you all think about that or another receiver like B. Lloyd, V. Jackson, M. Colston? It would be interesting a line up of one of those long threats, Welker, Gronk, and Hernandez. You wouldn't be able to double everyone and then draft a young talent at WR in the draft to add youth as well.

The views expressed in these FanPosts are not necessarily those of the writers or SBNation.

It all depends on what kind of $$$ Welker gets

If Welker needs to be franchised he eats up over $9MM in salary cap space. If they sign him it might be for not much less but they might be able to front him a big proratable signing bonus and backload the salary. I think that Ocho gets the boot which will free up some space. If those two things don’t happen, they’ll be hard pressed to add another big dollar WR and should look to prioritize that in the draft.

They could franchise Welker, and then work out a long term deal. Removing the tag after the deal.

I would absolutley love Wayne.

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

Obviously it depends on money...

But for the right price Wayne sounds like a good option to me.

Reggie Wayne is safer than Brandon Lloyd as a teammate,

but not as an athlete given his age. It depends on how much Wayne wants but I’m not sold on him being able to do what we need him to do at this stage in his career. It’s not so much just a deep-threat, just someone who can consistently beat one-on-one coverage.

It is what it is

Randy Moss also just announced that he is unretiring.

We could go from a corps of Welker, Branch and Ocho Cinco/Slater/Edelman to Lloyd,Wayne, Moss and Welker. Obviously it’s not all going to come together that way, but could you imagine that PLUS Gronk and Hernandez. Yikes.

Lloyd, Wayne, Moss, Welker, Gronk or Hernandez in 5 wide

I would personally just go cry if I was the opposing defensive coordinator. Of course, this is all on paper, not likely to really happen, etc. But still. Just let your imagination go for a bit…

If we had that

in our lowest scoring game, we’d probably get at least 40.

Signing Reggie Wayne and snagging another receiver in a top round is my dream.

It would set us up for the future and the present. A receiving corps of Gronk, Hernandez, Welker, Wayne with a RB in the backfield and Edelman and the rookie rotating in would be simply unstoppable. There’s just no way around that. Reggie Wayne is by far, unquestionably, my top choice for a new WR for the next two years.

Reggie Wayne is a perfect fit compared to other FA WR

Agreed.

He comes from a complex, QB-centric offense. Unlike Ocho, he’ll get on the same page with Brady right away. He’s also used to playing with a fierce competitor, so you know he won’t need any coddling.

And I would like to say

that I would welcome Reggie with open arms if he decided to get here.

A solid route runner that still possesses good enough speed even if he will slow down soon, he should have a good year or two left.

Great guy but too old for the contract and $ he'll want.

Yea. Too old.

Don’t get me wrong I want him but I don’t think he’ll solve our problem. Him + someone else would be ideal though.

I like Wayne, but...

I think he is a bit old, isn’t the type anylonger to beat the physical corners that press at the line, and is going to want to get paid. Why not Bowe? Big, fast, young and worth the money. Bowe, Lloyd, and Colston would be my order. Of course a nice pick in the draft too (Jeffrey if he is still there) to look ahead to the future.

There is also Pierre Garçon, Robert Meacham, Jerome Simpson, Andre Caldwell, Mike Wallace, Steve Jackson, DeSean Jackson. I think Anthony Gonzalez is as well better route runner and not known for a speedy receiver. But some of these names are intriguing. Loads of talent but wondering who will get the tag or not is the question at this point. Most likely Wallace and Jackson are going to get it. But the talent at WR this free agency is amazing.

marques colston is also a scheduled FA from the Saints

i can’t see a scenario where they can keep both colston and meachem (most likely colston over meachem)

in other news- Randy Moss has officially unretired

i don’t think the Patriots should sign him unless he comes at the vet min w/ incentives

He's unretiring for one of four reasons

1. He’s broke and needs another payday. i don’t know about his financial situation and haven’t seen any articles about it like the one I saw a few weeks ago about TO being broke with massive child support payments.
2. He wants to win a championship, specifically with TFB throwing him the ball. So one would guess the Pats have extended an invitation to him to see if he can come into camp and produce.
3. He wants to set more records. Unlikely to ever surpass Rice in any category, so i don’t think this is viable reason.
4. He misses the game. I don’t think is is a reality. If he loved the game that much wouldn’t have retired. He retired because no one wanted him on a winning team. I’m sure any bottom dweller would have paid him minimum wage last year to sell some tickets.

I'm guessing No. 4

He retired because no one would pay him what he felt he was worth – and he wanted no less than a 3-year deal. Plus, he’s said on a number of occasions that he won’t give it away for free. My thought is he wasn’t ready to stop playing and hopes that a team will take him on for a couple of years.

Keep the faith!

Mike Wallace RFA

Heard the Steelers Wallace is a restriced FA, meaning the team that signed him would have to give up a 1st round pick. The Pats never use theirs anyways… plus they have two of 1st round picks. I’m not totally sure but my guess is Wallace is a younger faster version of just about all the other guys mentioned.

RFA Steelers could try to match the offer but they are in a salary bind according to what I had heard.
