Looking at WRs from the 3rd round-7th round.

I was going to make a post about each WR in the draft, but I fear that it would be much more interesting if I look at WRs past the 3rd round that everyone here should look at (I'll include tall WRs. Don't worry deep threat fanatics). I will say something very brief, and provide video, stats, and a profile if I can find one. WRs are deep this draft, so let's not waste anytime and get started:

3rd Round WRs

Brian Quick, WR out of Appalachian State. 3rd Rounder.

Quick is 6'4" 222 lbs. He seems to have great balance, solid hands, and pretty good YAC. I know people would say "but he runs a 4.6 40!" Well..... he doesn't Watching the video, he looks like he runs a 4.5 at the most. He looks like a good pickup: Video, Profile (Although very short. And says he has "tackle like 33 1/2 inch arms"), and Stats.

Tommy Streeter, WR out of Miami. 3rd Rounder.

Tommy is quite an interesting prospect. I have watched video of him, and.... well he gets open. At least according to the video. He has good size at 6'4" 215 lbs, and has pretty good speed with his 40 time ranging in the mid 4's to around 4.5. he looks raw though, but talented. Here is video, Profile, stats.

Joe Adams, WR out of Arkansas. Late 3rd Rounder.

Joe looks very talented. Although he is 5'11" 174 lbs, I like what I see from him. he can return punts, seems to be a great route runner, get open, has good hands. If the pats drafted him I feel that he would light everyone up with us. Here is his video, profile, stats.

Chris Givens, WR out of Wake Forest. Late 3rd rounder.

Chris looks intriguing to me. He is 6', 195 lbs. and.... he has talent. He is good at pretty much everything. Not terribly AMAZING, but he can potentially be that way. I watched his highlights (that included his highschool games at first. lol), and I think he has potential. Then I read his profile, and this was the first thing I read:

As an NFL Draft prospect, Chris Givens offers a lot of production and agility. Givens relies on quickness and change of direction to achieve separation, and can make the spectacular catch. While most of his production came off short throws with plenty of YAC, Givens is a legit deep threat. Despite injuries in high school, Givens was healthy for the duration of his career at Wake. Givens could fit as a #2 WR or slot in most schemes, and likely is best suited for a West Coast offense.

Here is his video (skip to 1:48 for college video), profile 1 and profile 2 (His highschool profile, although it says that he played RB and some defense in highschool, which is awesome), and Stats.

4th Round WRs

TY Hilton, WR out of Florida International.

Hilton is 5'10" 184 lbs, and runs about a 4.5 40. Sure, he is not tall, but according to CBS Draft, he is a bonafide playmaker and punt returner. The video shows me that he has soft hands, has very good speed, and can great YAC, as well as break tackles. And he can go deep at times. If BB picks him up, I would be ecstatic.

I recommend you read his profile first, then watch his video, and here are his stats.

Marvin Jones, WR out of California.

Marvin is 6'2", 198 lbs. His 2010 highlights suggest that his QB is not a very good thrower, as he always has to adjust his body for the throw, and make the catch. He looks to have great hands and concentration, and has good speed. I can see the pats picking up Marvin because he can beat Press Coverage. At least according to the video, and when I have been searching for his profile, I heard some great thing of Marvin Jones from Matt Waldman.

Here is some video, could not really find a profile..., Stats

Jarius Wright, WR out of Arkansas. Late 4th Rounder.

I like what I saw out of Wright. he has good change of direction ability, good hands, and out of this world speed (Oh yeah). He reminds me of a very fast version of Deion Branch. Everytime he touches the ball he is a threat to score.

Here is some video, small profile, Stats

Marvin McNutt, WR out of Iowa. Late 4th Rounder.

McNutt (yes the name is quite funny) is a tall, 6'3" 216 lbs. receiver who has good speed, and great potential as a #1 WR. Here is his video, profile, stats.

Jeff Fuller, WR out of Texas A&M. Late 4th Rounder.

If there was a less faster version of Randy Moss, Jeff would be it (also doesn't hurt that his father is a former NFL CB). Fuller is 6'4" 217 lbs, has tremendous concentration, jump, and hands. His speed is good. but not great. Here is his video, profile, stats.

5th Round WR Prospects

Ryan Broyles, WR out of Oklahoma.

Ryan seems like a great slot receiver. Which our offense is completely fine with of course. He is 5'10", 188 lbs. here is his profile (which has some very good things to say), video, and stats.

6th Round WR Prospects

TJ Graham, WR out of NC State.

Looks like a great returner for punts and kicks. Can operate in the slot, and outside. Yes, he is only 5'11" 182 lbs, but he is very fast, and can get behind a defense. He has good hip movement, and he can break tackles. Looks to have prett decent hands. here is video, profile, stats.

Devon Wylie, WR out of Fresno State. Late 6th Rounder

Yes. He is 5'9" 186 lbs. But let me tell you what I saw from the vid. A) He is awesome quickness. I want to say even quicker then Wes. Yes I said it. But its a maybe. B) He can break tackles, and make people look like fools. C) he has 4.4 speed. D) He can return punts and kicks. He is a 6th rounder, so I think he would be fine depending on who we got earlier. Although he needs to stay healthy, and he takes gambles when punt returning.... Here is video, small profile, stats.I think we already have our wes clone in edelman, so I doubt we'll get him.

And there are really no other WRs beyond that that caught my eye. Maybe BJ Cunningham (who is a 6th round prospect), but he didn't really impress me. Of course I talked up some of the guys, and there are virtually ALL highlight tapes, but there is a lot more to them. For hands, you have to look at HOW he caught the ball. Was it a clean catch? Was sit effortlessly? Was it a body catch? Did the ball bobble when he caught it? How is his body control? Quickness off the line?

There are some pretty great prospects in the 2nd round, but I'd thought I give a shout out to the other WRs that a lot of people would miss. Some can even be potential all stars. You never know. If you'd like, use this post as a small basis when making a mock draft. Ever thought that there was a player you would rather take in the 1st or 2nd round that wasn't a WR, and feel like looking to see if there is any good value after that? Take a look here, and see if there is anyone that interests you. :)

A lot of talent in the 3rd and 4th round.

I’m willing to bet that BB would get a WR in one of those rounds. Still a possibility that he’ll get one in the 2nd round too. Maybe he’ll get 2 WRs this year. O=

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

And I highly encourage you all to check out all of the WRs here.

They all seem interesting. If you can set you differences with the whole height situation, you may find someone surprisingly very good.

I dont get caught up with how tall a guy is. There are numerous attributes that make Wr’s good. Some are big and physically powering like Vincent Jackson. Some are small and lightning quick like DeSean Jackson. I personally think some of the taller guys have more success in college due to their size advantage rather than their talent or ability. I’d love if BB found a 2-3 rounder similar to the Steeler’s receivers. I know its not easy, but they have to have success drafting a WR at somepoint.

I believe we'll get two WRs this draft.

Hopefully that increases our chances of finding a diamond in the rough. :)

Well, given recent history, BB likes to double up his picks

And my guess is that he does it to improve competition at the position with the hopes that the draftees push eachother. E.G. he could take a WR in the 2nd and 4th. The problem this year is that we dont have 5th, 6th, or 7th round picks to double up later on. BUT, given BB’s propensity for draft day trades, i’d guess that we will pick up at least 1 late pick through his various trades.
I also think that BB will sign at least 1 veteran WR (hoping Colt’s Wayne…)

by The Qwan on Feb 15, 2012 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

I can see a veteran WR, and at least one WR in the draft.

Hurts that we don’t have the later picks, but it seems all the talent is in the 3rd and 4th rounds anyways.

the steelers have success as much for their scouting as their system.

guys like brown, n wallace n even the raiders’ denarius moore n jacoby ford have a lot of success due to their schemes n systems. they are very simple and easy to pick up. it is very difficult for a young wr to fit right into our system. heck its even difficult for vets as we saw last year. i wish we would adapt to the talent available. like we did with our defense adapting to the 4-3 due to talent available.

Interesting on Givens and Adams

Although I would say Adams is skyrocketing up the boards, and could land in the middle of the second round on draft day.

Yeah I think Adams will be rising up.

his counterpart Jarius Wright looks very good too.

Isnt it interesting to watch guy fly up the boards?

There are a few every year. You wonder if the team’s scouting departments knew a players value all along, and if its just the media catching up by realizing the players actual talent and draft position. This year LSU’s DT Brockers is the guy who has gone from borderline 1st rounder to top 10 pick, which sucks, because he sounds like someone the Pats could have been interested in at the right spot.

None of these guys will solve our problem

but perhaps one of them + a guy like Reggie Wayne would be good. Right now we have 1 good receiver in Welker, the goal is to have 3 good receivers: if we get Wayne/Moss and then draft one of these guys, or even a 1st or 2nd rounder, thats ideal. I like McNutt too

I like his size and athleticism. I think he’s turning some heads and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go in the late Second to mid Third. I don’t think he makes it to the Fourth round.

I'm positive BB goes for 2 WRs in the draft

despite FA. Pats need to get younger there and BB has been drafting in pairs lately. I think he’ll aim for 2 in the first 4 rounds. It’ll be hard not to with the talent out there. There may not be a true top-10 WR, but there are a lot of value picks in the 2nd/3rd rounds.

I could also see the Pats going for two 3/4DEs as that class, like the WR class, seems to be deep in value picks.

It is what it is

by Middlesex on Feb 15, 2012 8:59 PM EST reply actions

Oh...

and despite that bold prediction, I still say the Pats trade away 31st to either deny the Giants TE Dwayne Allen or to give NY’s divisional rival QB Ryan Tannehill. Perrennial contenders can only get a top-20 pick through this method of constantly trading back, and given the deep WR and 3/4 DE classes there will be plenty of value for teams trading back.

It is what it is

I don't mind NE. I don't like NYJ, but I don't mind NE a whole lot...

But if you guys get Tommy Streeter, I will hate you! He’s actually listed at 6’5 and he’s been clocked as fast a 4.38 in the 40. His hands are pretty good, but he sometimes tries to catch too many passes with his body. Still, it’s not often you find a 6’5 WR that can run a sub-4.4 40.

Just don’t draft him or else I’ll have to add the Patriots to the “I despise” list along with the Jets, Raiders, Knicks, Lakers, USC, FSU, UF, Mets, and Red Sox (sorry, but I grew up with the Yankees due to my NJ roots!)…

Yeah, there are many other great prospects, some WRs better than Streeter.

But I would hate nothing more than to see a UM prospect go to either New England or to the Jets and tear it up. Of course, Streeter’s ability to “tear it up” with the Jets is limited thanks to Sanchez.

Are they smart players? That’s been the big question when it came to making it as a WRin our offense. Can you pick it up. Tate was fast and could return kicks, Ocho hand decent size and ran good routes, Price could make great catches and was explosive. None of that mattered because they couldn’t pick up the offense

Some people can learn from the mistakes of others, while some people need to pee on the electric fence themselves.
As the Greek philosopher Mediocrites once said, "Eh, it's good enough."

Interesting tidbit here

Plausible? I think its not likely but could happen if BB wants to really do it (Moss’ chances of being here are higher than Wallace’s IMO)

We'd have to give up a first rounder if we are to sign him.

And with WR so deep this draft and free agency, I don’t think he’ll do it. =/

But it would be interesting.

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

Not worth it

if we can get Lloyd, who isn’t that much of a talent step down from Wallace, is likely to go cheaper and is guaranteed to fit with Josh McD’s offense.

Next Year

Man this years WR class is so sick.

maybe we draft 3 WRs and keep welker/edelmen and slater for special teams and cut Ocho and Branch.

also use kevin faulks spot and replace with Dorin Dickerson to be 3rd TE.
and use Vereen/Ridley as one two RB punch with Woodhead in a 3rd Kevin Faulk receiving RB role.

Draft Prediction

1st Round WR
1st Round DT/DE pass rush
2nd Round WR
2nd Round LB who can drop in coverage to balance out mayo/spikes/ninkovich and serve as depth with fletcher/tarpinian
3rd Round Center
4th Round (Comp) WR

Free Agents – Safety and DT/DE

areas of strength on Patriots – TE, LB, RB, OL, and CB (surprise! Arrington, Dowling, DMC, Moore mix is tremendous if they have safety help, could see a CB in 2nd round again if DMC is moved to safety)

other players off Squad – Malcolm WIlliams as safety? Markell Carter as DE? Dorin Dickerson as TE/WR? Underwood as contributing WR or PR?

this years team can only get better with core of team intact

we will absolutely draft a cb

this drafted is way more loaded at cb than even wr.
