Immediate Reactions to the Loss...

Obviously we have to talk about the damned safety. Just a dumb play on a dumb situation and a poor execution led to arguably 9 points by the Giants to jump out to the lead.

The Pats played so well the second and third quarter at one point i was almost certain they were going to win it.

So many friggin drops in the fourth quarter. It's really upsetting.

The Mario Manningham catch was infuriating. Every single time the Giants get so damn lucky.

BB shouldn't have challenged it either. Lost a timeout foolishly.

The defense bended and broke. The whole idea, in my opinion is kind of neat, but it has to go out. evident by the past two seasons, it simply doesn't work when it matters.

Its pretty clear the Pats need a real deep threat.

I have to wonder if Gronk was healthy, how much of a difference would have he made.

What goes on from here? Well the offense is great, but Branch is not getting any younger and Welker can only do so much as the only wide receiver. The defense is terrible. I don't know what it takes, it needs to get revamped soon. The line is pretty good, and Mayo, Spikes, McCourty and Chung can stay, the rest need to do a whole loot of improving or the Pats need new personnel.

Its clear now that defense wins championships, and our defense isn't very good.

It was a good game nonetheless, however I dont feel like the better team ended up winning.

Also, How do you cope with a Superbowl loss like this one?

So close it hurts

There were a lot if onlys but god that Brady Welker play is agonizing. But life will move on. Football is only a part albeit for me important part of life. Just try and stay away from espn. I know it sucks now but the fact that we got to witness the greatest QB- Head coach combo ever go to 5 superbowl is something most franchises will never achieve. We just have to move on and look ahead to next season.

I thought Sterling Moore had a decent game.

I just hope we draft better secondary personnel (not necessarily Mathieu, but someone who is his caliber or just a smidgen below but is damn good). And the dropped catches and Manningham catch really pissed me off.

All in all, the only thing I can say at this point is how damn proud I am of this team this year and that they fought to the bitter end. That’s basically it. Other than that, I can now dedicate my attention to the NFL Draft as well as the rest of hockey season (Lets Go Devils!).

Enough with the defense it's always been the O

The offense has always been the problem. 07: 14 pts 09: 14 pts 2010: 21 pts (with garbage TD at the end) 2011: 17 pts We nearly lost the game before
BB and the D has given the O a chance to win us games. I’m tired of this shit man Brady just can’t win without a dominating defense. We have made the decision to give Brady weapons and build this team around the offense and our D isn’t built to keep teams under 20 pts on a regular basis, but our O is built to score 30 every game so when it’s can’t even score 22 or 18 pts IN THE SUPERBOWL then THAT’S THERE FAULT! The defense already won us a game, they shouldn’t have to win most of our playoff games when we have the offense we have. Shit this is annoying

Draft/sign another receiver. Branch disappears way too often, Welker is one guy and he made a huge drop. Ocho who knows…we don’t even use him even though i think he’s way better than branch. Herandez and Gronk are good as it gets but Gronk was hobbled and it obviously showed.

by lololol on Feb 5, 2012 10:42 PM EST up reply actions

No enough with offense

We had the greatest O of all time in 07 and still only put up 17 pts. Get back to the basics. Build a smothering defense, leave Brady with a good O-line and some Ok receivers and that’s a championship team

They have enough picks to cap space to full both needs

by lololol on Feb 5, 2012 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

One deep threat is the difference maker

Also, in 09 Welker was on IR, in ‘10 Hernandez was hobbled, and now Gronkowski was clearly limited. There’s nothing you can do about injuries, but while the offense was very disappointing in all of these losses, there are reasons for it.

Right. Defense did their jobs for most of the game. They just need some tweaking and more experience with each other.

next year will be very interesting.

The Mario Manningham catch was infuriating. Every single time the Giants get so damn lucky.

I love how nobody wants to give credit to anything except luck.

Let me break it down for you, homie:

Eli made a great read and put the ball where only his receiver could catch it.
Said receiver beat his defender and made the catch, getting both feet down.

Where does luck play into that? The Giants did get lucky bounces on fumbles, but that’s not what won the game.

The Pats were outplayed on the field and outcoached on the sideline. All in all, a tremendous effort by NY as a team. Karma has a way of paying those folks back what they give. Sorry for the fans, but hoodie gets what he deserves

We allowed Art Modell to buy the team, fire probably the best football coach ever – Paul Brown (if it wasn’t for Modell, the NFL trophy would be called the Paul Brown trophy instead of the Lombardi- whom Paul Brown suggested to Green Bay to hire as a head coach) – which in turn caused the birth of the Bengals – who proceeded to trade so many good players and picks over the years and squander the money from the Stadium that two pro sports teams used, and then later hired a first time head coach (B. Belicheck) who destroyed a team that was consistently going to the playoffs & AFC title games (I’ll admit getting over the hump to the superbowl was gut wrenchingly out of our reach) – who then moved the team to Baltimore, causing the birth of the Ravens.

So what have we done? We allowed/supported an asshat as an owner and we have paid a hefty price ever since.

There is. Both teams played very well at times. At least two dropped passes switched around and caught who knows? I will say it was brilliant to not fight the TD at the end and kill the time off. Tom almost pulled off what would have beaten the most dramatic ending to a championship game ever (The best being the ending of the Rams-Titans game)…

You're right

I wouldn’t really call that luck. Every team needs a little luck to get to and win the Superbowl, but the Pats still had their chances to win anyway.

As a Boston sports fan it's one extreme or the other it seems

This one unfortunately has to go in the devastating defeat category.

Red Sox in 03’
Red Sox in 11’
Patriots in 07’
Patriots in 10’
Patriots in 11’
Bruins in 10’
Celtics in 10’

It’s the awesome championship category that makes it all worth it.

Patriots in 01’
Patriots in 03’
Patriots in 04’
Red Sox in 04’
Red Sox in 07’
Celtics in 08’
Bruins in 11’

It’s just how it goes.

Well, we're ridiculously spoiled

Devastating defeats can only occur in big games. Only 1 team is happy at the end of the year. With 4 major sports, you’re going to be unhappy a lot.

tough loss, but it was a heck of a season, and it’s not like the Pats are going to fall off a cliff anytime soon. with Brady, and Belicheck there. So condolences, and see you next season.

Hey guys trust me I know how it feels to lose a Super Bowl or two…maybe even four.

Anyways thanks to both teams, Pats and Giants, for an outstanding game. Only if Gronk would have dove for that ball….it was his.

by Jeremy Galton on Feb 5, 2012 11:59 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, it's a tough loss

But 18-1 was much tougher, and losing 4 Super Bowls in a row is devastating.

by tossin on Feb 6, 2012 12:15 AM EST up reply actions

What’s even more devastating is missing 3 super bowls due to one bad play in each game.

Dolphins fan here

Here’s what I saw last night (and four years ago):

First, I give credit to the Giants. However, what I see in N.E. is a team that isn’t crisp in the Super Bowl – uncharacteristic mistakes (that early safety, costly penalties, dropped passes), and I see the Giants get every break they need (fumbled twice, recovered twice), and yet New England STILL could’ve won. If they can put a whole game together, watch out! Brady’s window is closing, but he’s still got more magic in him. The offense will continue to score, and the tight ends will only get better. The defense looks like it’s coming around, and I’m even including the DBs here (Sterling Moore looks like he’s got a knack for making good plays around the ball). They’ll be a factor for a few more years with Brady, and if Ryan Mallet can pick up where Brady leaves off, you should continue to do well. But look out – we’re comin’ for ya! Either way, congratulations on a fine season (as much as it hurts to lose a Super Bowl) – you have a lot to be proud of up there. See you in September.
