OTA - Off-Topic Activities #17: Careful with that Glock, son.

Welcome one and all to the OTA - Off-Topic Activities or Open To Anything or Oughtta Talk Alot or Open Thread All!. The best place to not discuss football at Pats Pulpit.

This is a thread for anyone who would like to enjoy some pleasant conversation that may or may not be football related. This is a place where some of us can get to know each other a little bit better, and on a slightly different level than other places on the site. A thread that may contain at times humorous dialogue, quotes, pictures, or anything else that might entertain. Remember to have a good time! But also please remember to keep it somewhat clean. We'd prefer innuendo over gory details.

Rules

All the rules are based on this: Have fun, but don't keep other people from having fun.

a) Don't troll each other, or attack other members. You learned this in kindergarten.

b) If a picture is NSFW (Not Safe For Work), do not post it as a picture. Instead post it as a link.

c) Be kind to newbies, and help them fit in. Remember to share your crayons.

d) If someone asks you nicely to steer clear of a topic, find something else to talk about.

e) Any and all other SBN and PatsPulpit rules apply. In other words, this ain't Vegas.

Rec this thread, so it stays atop the most rec'd fanposts. Unrec it when another thread is made.

Star-divide

Below is a guide to certain slang, lingo, nicknames, or any kind of term that we use here at the Pulpit.

Format: Term – Definition/ Explanation [Creator of term/First to use]

Citgo – a place where irrelevant people especially in sports will be/ are working.
examples:
What is HC Mangini/a doing now?-Working @ the citgo
What is Adiaulus Thomas doing right now-Working at the citgo.

DDR- Moniker for Lawrence Maroney which describes his tendency to "dance" at the line of scrimmage, in comparison to the style in which players dance of the arcade game "Dance Dance Revolution" (AtomicDawg)
Fredo/Mangina - Nicknames for ex-Pats assistant coach Eric Mangini (creator/first to use term unknown)
Toy Story/Woody/Buzz – Nicknames for RB Danny Woodhead (Richard Hill)
The Executioner- Nickname for Devin McCourty (Comedic.Sans)
Steal This Thread/Jack A Thread – (SlotMachinePlayer/NinjaZX6R) A predecessor of this thread.

Herndo/A-Hern/H-Bomb – Nicknames for TE Aaron Hernandez
Law Firm/Benny– Nickname for RB BenJarvis Green-Ellis; derived for the many combined names he has, which is similar to any law firm made up of 3 or more people
Seabass – Nickname for RT Sebastian Vollmer
Space Emperor of Space – Nickname for P Zoltan Mesko
Smurfs — Nickname for the Patriots’ collection of undersized position players (primarily Branch, Woodhead, and Welker, but may also include Faulk and Edelman) -Created by Comedic Sans

BoB / BooB-Bill O' Brien - Pats offensive Coordinator- Bob; When He is on fire; BooB when He is just sucks.

How can find me from what movie is that quote?

A romantic but lecherous human being. Big passion for gold, guns and underwears.

This is the most interesting part, though. Likes cooking. Faith in the US: restored. I mean, they could use more people like you. Maybe in two or three generations, if you do your job (why wouldn’t you, we already established you like bedroom action), the US citizens will eat real food.

Ah....

My baby brother is trying to turn me into a Flyers fan, and my other brother has been trying to distract me with the Sixers. It hasn’t been working too well, though- the Flyers have lost six of their last eight, amid having huge issues (they have commenced to pointing fingers in the dressing room, which is never a good sign of being able to snap out of it). The Sixers are playing well, but my heart is just not in it.

I have been keeping busy, though- I crafted a lot this week, and between that and chasing after my Mom it is not like I have been hurting for stuff to do.

Okay, so to sum up.

Strong and independent woman, what you read serve two purposes: more often than not, you’ll read something that stimulates your mind. Reading should invite reflection on topics that matter and that you may not know very well. I think you really like to understand people and cultures better, and you look for that when you read too.

Besides that, you need to make some breaks from those interesting but sometimes tough readings, and you let your imagination travel far away with romances.

My take: Sensitive soul hidden behind a healthy dose of logic and need to know and understand a lot of stuff – sports or people.

by Lythos on Feb 13, 2012 8:59 AM EST up reply actions

According to the Gunpedia - yeah, there is one,

A GLOCK can be x-rayed. The metal parts still show up, the ammo still shows up, and even the plastic parts (embedded with metal) are radio opaque – meaning you’ll still see the image of the gun. Now I’ve never x-rayed one, so I don’t know, but they say it was misreported and then re-reported without fact check by AP, ended up in DH2, and now has become urban legend. Wouldn’t surprise me.

Some plastics and ceramics are detectable by x-ray anyway. Probably the easiest way to hide a weapon from x-ray would be to put it inside something that would block the x-ray, but have a benign shape. Maybe inside a saxophone or something.

The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

#17... Where is Taylor Price? Do we miss him yet?

He’s basically JAG in that Jacksonville team (pun intended)

by Lythos on Feb 9, 2012 5:58 PM EST reply actions

Unfortunately, I think anyone past the "big three" is going to be kind of tough to get targets.

Someone was saying that Tom only throws to his “favorite targets”, and there may be some truth to that.

But if you look, Welker Gronk, and Herndo all do an amazing job of getting open. If those are among the first three looks on the progressions, chances are one of them has some seperation. That means the progression goes no further.

I also think in the spread (empty backfield), Tom only has so much time to let a guy get open before he’s gonna get hit. That means he probably doesn’t have enough time to run down every potential target, plus look off the safety, etc. before he has to dump the ball.

It’s going to be hard for any young guy to work his way up the food chain. Taylor Price wasn’t that guy.

The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

by SlotMachinePlayer on Feb 9, 2012 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

I agree on that

And I don’t think we need to add another dimension to that offense. But someone who could get open deep might be an interesting option, as a #2 or #3 read once in a while.

Anyway, I wish TP best of luck where he is.

by Lythos on Feb 9, 2012 6:22 PM EST up reply actions

Moss could do that (you really saw it when Wes went down early in 2009).
Galloway couldn’t.
Tate couldn’t.
Price had the athleticism to, but was not a great route guy.
Branch could, once, but can’t really run a go route anymore and beat someone.
Ocho could, once, but isn’t that guy anymore.

I’d just like someone who’s going to be able to move the safety deep once in awhile, and when he plays too deep – make him pay. If he doesn’t go deep, then make him pay.

The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

You don't need to convince me, I'm basically agreeing with what you say.

A guy who can get open on a deep route, but doens’t have to run it every time. And I’m not asking for a Larry Fitzgerald / Calvin Johnson type of player.

Yeah, height or physicality is a plus, but isn't a requirement.

DeSean Jackson would work.

Jackson is getting something of a bad rap-

Yes, he had problems this past year in Philly with his attitude, which were largely related to his contract.

I am not sure how he fits into the league with drops, but I have never heard his name mentioned as leading the league in drops (and living near Philly I am subjected to 16 Eagles games a year).

As for being a diva, I don’t think he is any worse than a number of elite wide receivers- I almost wonder if there is some link between having that type of talent and divadom, as they seem to ride together.

"Valdez can pitch, Lee can hit... and pigs can fly."

by dannijd on Feb 12, 2012 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

All receivers aren't like that, and those who are aren't welcome in BB's team...

I think we had enough proof of that over time.

The biggest concern about Jackson is he’s looking for a big paycheck, and I’m sure we’d rather spend money on Welker and add another quality receiver than losing Wes to free agency and getting another big name that may or may not understand the offense.

I’ll trust you on that drop thing. I heard it mentioned a few times, but even our guys refuse to catch the ball sometimes :P

by Lythos on Feb 12, 2012 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

I totally agree with you if the choice is literally Welker or Jackson...

I started to write a FanPost right after the Eagles game about the two of them, but life intervened and I did not get it edited and up in a timely fashion. I definitely like Welker better of the two, in part because of attitude, and in part for how well he fits in the Patriots system.

There is no disputing Jackson’s talent, though. (he is definitely electrifying)

"Valdez can pitch, Lee can hit... and pigs can fly."

by dannijd on Feb 12, 2012 3:30 PM EST up reply actions

I think it's "literally Welker or Jackson" considering the money factor.

If he was ready to join at a reasonable price, then why not. I just don’t think it’s a good idea to spend money on a receiver, because by definition, his impact is limited. He doesn’t always have the ball in his hands. The lines and quarterback are positions worthy of a big pay check, because they always contribute, for example. Hence why paying two WR big bucks doesn’t seem a great idea to me.

by Lythos on Feb 12, 2012 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

Not really...

While I don’t think the answer is “Both”, it could be “Neither”, and that may be the best thing for the team.

I totally agree that paying two receivers big bucks is not smart, but I am up in the air, with the salary cap space available, as to whether even paying one big money is a good idea.

I quit giving something up for Lent 15 years ago...

That year, I gave up bagels (my usual, albeit fattening breakfast). I was taking classes for my confirmation at the time, and we discussed the idea of giving something up for Lent as a way of sacrificing, and the priest said that there was no link between giving up bagels and drawing closer to God, so what was the point? He suggested that instead of giving something up during Lent, we should add something, such as prayer or Bible study that causes us to improve our relationship with God. I haven’t given anything up for Lent since!

When you add something (as I will also by doing a Monday night prayer group), you also have to “give up” something else to be there.

Ah, the courses?

Well, I’m not “taking” any classes per se, since you don’t chose your courses in France, but I went for a private law path, with international private law, commercial law, criminal and civil law, and a few public ones, like tax law…

Fascinating, really.

Ah

In the US, there are courses that all first year students must take (contracts, torts, civil procedure, and legal research and writing first term, criminal procedure, constitutional law, property, and moot court second term, along with a couple of must takes in either the second or early third year if you wanted to do practical work while in law school (Evidence and Professional Responsibility). For my electives, I focused on litigation specific courses (including pre-trial and trial advocacy, and Alternative Dispute Resolution), family law and criminal law courses.

I had a very quiet weekend. Long meeting at church on Sunday. Opted to bea grown-up on Saturday night and stay in instead of going out since the last time I went out the night before one of these meetings (where I always have to give a presentation), I ended up staying out until 4 am, getting 2 hours of sleep, was obviously hungover, and felt myself swaying at the pulpit while making my little speech. My mother in the audience said I was perspiring quite a bit, i.e. I was the colloquial whore sweatin’ in church.

theres no “rise of Eli Manning.” Hes just in the right place at the right time – sort of the opposite of Matthew Stafford. Give them the same opportunities, Stafford’s better.

Furthermore, would Peter King be writing that if the Pats had won? I doubt it. He made a few plays in a big game, Wes Welker didn’t. Give Manning credit n all, but that shouldn’t be career making/breaking.

Most players in the audience looked uncomfortable

and some did not like the jokes directed at them. Alec Baldwin announced Madonna was in the audience, and the camera panned to a not-at-all-pleased Clay Matthews. There were similar awkward moments and Tim Tebow got mentioned way, way too many times. Some jokes were good, but some were skin-crawling when the cameras would show whoever the subject was, not enjoying the spotlight.

Great Director

The Hidden Fortress is widely believed to have strongly influenced Lucas’ Star Wars. The Seven Samurai should (and is, for the most part) considered one of the greatest films ever made; the American made Magnificent Seven was practically a direct copy of it, but as a Western.

Though probably not as great as The Seven Samurai, 13 Assassins is quite good; an excellent movie if you like stories about military strategy and honor, but don’t mind all the blood.

Begun, the offseason has

time for me to stop moaning about the SB and start moaning about how we’ve got two seasons, Easter, the 4th of July, April Showers, May flowers, standardized tests, and 6 months before we see any more meaningful football. =(….

Dang!!!

You just made it sound SO FAR AWAY!

I am still sulking over the Super Bowl… I have reserved the right to do that until Sunday. Then pitchers and catchers will report, reminding me that Spring will come, and that it is time to lick my wounds from the sports year that just ended, and start looking to the future.

Soon after that, Spring Training will start, along with March Madness, and soon Free Agency will come again, and the sting of the loss will fall farther into the past, and I will be able to look back at the year and see it more for the successes than the fact the teams I loved fell short in the end. April will bring Opening Day Baseball, Easter, and the NFL draft. Before we know it, summer will be upon us, bringing the other kind of OTA’s… Then training camp will hit, and when it is time for the first pre-season game, we will all be surprised by how quickly the time flew!

I dunno if i was ever really mad we lost the SB

the fact that we got there in the first place was an accomplishment. I do worry what it means for the team, though, and can’t believe that of all teams it had to be against the GOD DAMN GIANTS.

Yeah...

Granted it had some great moments too (Welcome Back Brady! Coming back to beat the Bills)… Yet the overall tone of the season was sad- Bruschi retiring and Seymour being traded just as the season was about to begin. I remember Welker’s injury being a punch to the heart that year (it was also the only time I tried listening to the Patriots on radio- I turned on my new satellite radio, and the first thing I heard was that he had been carted off), and being thankful for having to leave during the playoff game to go to work.

You should march to the nearest game store and buy Mass Effect 1.

The beginning (the citadel area) is kind of meh, and the land rover segment stinks (which they took out in the 2nd game) but after that…. its unbelievable. I say get both game, but I think you should start out with the first one which is about 20 dollars or less. I rate the story on par with MGS. Greatly told, and great characters. Also the choices you make in the first one will carry over into the second game. And the choices you make in the 2nd game, carry over to the 3rd game as well.

There are no trailers imo that really do it justice. Mass Effect is something that needs to be experienced. :P

(I work in a fairly ritzy upper-end wine store. We get a lot of customers coming in with partial information about the wine they’re looking for, but we can usually help them find it. Sometimes, not so much.)

Me: "Can I help you, ma’am?"

Customer: "Yes, I bought a case of wine here last month, and I’d like another. I don’t remember the name, but I remember where in France it’s from."

(Our French wines are organized by the part of France that the wines are from, so this is very helpful.)

Me: "Okay, perhaps you’ll recognize the bottle when we get to that section. Where’s it from?"

Customer: "The ‘cote a ouvrir.’"

Me: "Do you mean Côtes du Rhône, or Côtes du Ventoux, or one of the Côtes appellations in Burgundy, perhaps?"

Customer: "I know d*** well I bought wine here last month, and the box said ‘cote a ouvrir!’"

Me: "I’m sure it did, ma’am. That’s French for ‘open this side.’"

Customer: "Yes! Where do you keep the French wines that say ‘cote a ouvrir?’"

Me: gestures to the section we’re in "About two thirds of these will say that."

Customer: "So, it’s not very helpful?"

Me: "Not as such, no."

I used to work at the Sears repair store selling parts.

I had to know what all of the whatchamcallits, dodads, thingamajigs, dowhatsits thingamabobs, and dohickeys were – or at least fake my way through it. Often the latter. People would call up, spout out a model number of something you’ve never seen before and ask you for a part you’ve never heard of. Then ask if you think that might be the problem.

When the customer comes in and says they bought it at Sears and it’s still under warranty, but it’s a 20 year old Montgomery Ward brand it’s going to be a long day. Then there’s the idiot who brought his vacuum in to be fixed and then stole a drill off the show room wall. Of course we had his name, address, phone number, and credit card information from him brining in his vacuum. Strange thing is, one of the parts his vacuum needed was a drill. We tossed it right on his card. Idiot.

A woman with her 5 bratty offspring, all touching the deli meat glass case I had just cleaned, walked in 3 minutes before closing and proceeded to order 1/4 lb of 8 different things – all of them just plastic wrapped in preparation for my exit out the door. As I’d already mentally drunk my first serving of water, barley and hops, I was none to pleased. After the third, “Slice the cheese thinner, boy!”, I dialed in “invisible” on the meat slicer and proceed to crank out about a thousand slices for her 1/4 lb. Then, I pressed down with as much strength as I could muster. I’m sure she blew a gasket with the block of Land o’ Lakes American I’d just created for her.

It’s the little things…

You may be on to something, though.

If you go from the cheese that you can read newspaper through, to newspapers made of cheese, you might be able to save the newspaper industry. That is if people don’t get too bound up by the morning editorial.

I hear ya, lol

I worked for a time selling shoes and will never forget that August before school started. Moms brought their broods of kids in with the sweatiest, dirtiest feet imaginable and wearing sweat-soaked, sandbox-caked socks and I had to pleasantly fit them all for sneakers and shoes. While busy fitting the masses, the kids not being waited on would tear up the rest of the store, trying on the display shoes and leaving them on the floor or shoving them back on the wrong shelves. Only lasted 3 months in that place and it wasn’t worth the employee discount, lol.

Keep the faith!

Funny stuff

I’m just about done with Breaking Bad Season 3 on Netflix and my best, legal option for Season 4 (NOT on Netflix) is to pay for a download from Amazon. As a Prime member, I get a bit of a discount.

Patience I must have.

I’m not very confrontational so the best story I can remember at the moment is perking up and starting to take notes when someone in the class started a story with “my roommate’s cousin said” and told a story the reeked of urban legend. Used my notes when I got home to look it up on snopes then sent the link to my friends in the class and we privately had a good laugh at the gullible or lying girl who told the story.

One of my friends who went to another school was traumatized...

…when a girl in his class asked him to critique a story she had written (this was in hs). It started off as a rather vapid teenage tale and then seemingly without warning turned into an explicit x-rated number. She wasn’t a sexy person, so the entire incident grossed him out. I still laugh thinking about it.

I hated when we did peer groups in any writing class

I can’t stand people reading something I wrote if I’m not done with it, and always felt really awkward reading through other people’s stuff. If it sucked I had to try to try to be helpful without saying that. If it was good then I felt bad about not having much to add besides catching a typo or two.
