I hate when people say "Well we didn't have a deep threat when we were winning SBs, so we don't need one now"
That is only true to an extent. We still had WRs that had the speed or size to stretch the field and make plays on the outside. Defenses could not just single in on one part of the field like they do now because we could burn them deep. With who?
Maybe it was Troy Brown one play http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pT7-FtPKRQ
Maybe it was Deion Branch another http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tf-BiwThN9A
Maybe it was David Patten http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1NCr1U4GJ0&feature=channel&list=UL
Or even David Givens http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKC7MIFVJx4&feature=channel&list=UL
The point is we had guys who could keep a defense honest. As the highlights show, Patent, Brown, Branch, Givens all could go deep. None of these guys were burners like a Steve smith or a Desean Jackson but all of them could stretch the field to an extent.
This is what we have been missing the past two years. A guy on the outside that could make you respect the deep ball. Ocho, Price, and Tate were all brought in to give this offense that missing component, but in the end they didn’t. Fortunately for us we brought this is what Brandon Lloyd will give us next year. He will not be Randy Moss. He is not 6’4 and runs a 4.3 40, (although there is someone in this draft that meets that criteria). With that said, he has a chance to be better than any of those 4 WRs. He is just as fast (if not faster), his routes are just as good, and he seems to be just as smart. Now what really separates Lloyd from that group and most other WRs is his amazing body control and his knack for adjusting to just about any ball and getting his hands on it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VcqJJ4HcSQ
He certainly could be a #1 receiver in this offense, although I doubt he will be that just because of the others, already established, guys.
