Its been a long time since I drafted a post. I've been in and out of here though. I'd like to say what has already been said by many. Bill Belichick is not a coach who is trying to please the fan base. He is not a coach who will cater to the media. His job is to build and coach a profession football team.
Tavon Wilson is an unknown pick to many fans. His drafting in the second round is puzzling to the gurus who know the game better than anyone. Gurus who are soo good, they are sitting behind a desk and giving their opinions. More after the jump.I have a great deal of respect for Mike Mayock. Not everything he says is right. But I respect him. More than any other analyst. A lot of guys are always trying to figure Bill out. First he is a genius. Then he has forgotten what is important. And he has gotten old. Then he is a genius again.
Sebastian Vollmer went under the radar. He wasn't invited to the scouting combine. Was taken by the Patriots in the second round. And save for last season with a back injury. Has done nothing but justify the scouting process of the Patriots.
A scouting process that didn't start at the end of the NFL season. A process that began when the college practices started. It began when they looked at NFL prospects from the season before. How did they measure up to guys who would be drafted high by NFL teams and their standards? How did they play against elite competition all the way through? These are the duties of the scouts. By the time we come into the process, most of their work is done. The team already has a good idea of what they want. When they get an up close look at the guy. The team is already solidifying their last few notes. The book is more than likely about to be closed.
It seems like every year there is one player picked by New England that either the fans don't like. Or the media doesn't like. Or both. Last year it was Stevan Ridley. :P That was fun. Believe it or not, I didn't like Rob Gronkowski's selection. But I was proven wrong. I remember the night the Patriots drafted Devin McCourty. A reporter asked how come Bill didn't draft a pass rusher. It went on for a minute, but Bill told him. I'm going to do what is best for the team. The fans may not like it. But I'm going to do what is best for the team.
Tavon deserves a chance to play football. There were 7 teams interested in his services. This was supposed to be a weak safety class. But if you trust the process, you know when you have found a good player, and when you have found a guy who will just be a depth player. I'm trusting the scouting process. Bill has managed to build and defy a lot of experts with how he does things. I'm glad. Because his outside-the-box thinking has yielded 5 Super Bowl appearances.
