Two clues to Welker's departure

Last year the Patriots franchised Welker for $9M. Why? That amount of money is simply cuckoo for the Patriots. Nine million for a slot receiver? What? They did it because this was the last shot. No other reason. He got a one year payday.

The past two months of Welker talk did not bother to stick with the point. The Patriots had their chance to sign him to a multi year deal last year...a year younger and they passed. Why would they sign him this year? He was the third or fourth highest paid player on the team and this year? Who knows.

The Patriots do not overpay people. As they stick to this principle they lose players who are due for their paydays and generally refuse to sign FA players whom are due for their paydays.

Second clue? Hernandez and Gronk are signed. The team moved quickly and effectively to get these two players under contract. In other words, they "Paid" them. Will they pay them again? Past behavior suggests no.

Welker's potential 2014 salary does not fit with the Patriots formula and a lot of good players are elsewhere because of this formula.
