According to an initial report, the Arizona Cardinals will release their All-Pro safety Adrian Wilson today. Wilson has been with the Cardinals since 2001 and has made it to 12 Pro Bowls in that time.

The move doesn't come as a huge surprise; although Wilson started 14 games for Arizona last season, he also saw his playing time diminish as the year wore on. Plus, Arizona defensive coordinator has Ray Horton departed for the Cleveland Browns, and the Cardinals seem focused in infusing the team with youth at every position. At 33, Wilson is closer to the end of his career than the beginning, so it was time to move on.

From a Patriots standpoint, this comes as good news. Should they decide to go after Wilson, they should be able to get him without breaking the bank, and I'm sure he would be excited to play for a contender. Wilson can also still play, and would make for a nice veteran leader should Ed Reed decide to stay in Baltimore. I don't think that Wilson is as good as he once was, but I also think a change of scenery would do him well, and I can see new England as a fantastic place for him to experience a bit of a career revival.

Even if the Patriots don't go after Wilson, it still helps their cause, as there is now a fairly deep pool of safeties that will be available, both via free agency and the draft. Given that safety is one of the team's most glaring needs, this certainly comes as good news for New England.

I'd love to sit here and speculate as to whether or not Bill Belichick will pursue Adrian Wilson, but I have absolutely no idea. For the right price, he would be an excellent fit, but there may be other teams who will offer him more money than New England will. Plus, Wilson may want to follow his DC and head over to Cleveland. The good news is that we won't have to wait that much longer to see what happens next.
